Top 6 Mobile Video Game Ports for iOS and Android

Smartphones and tablets have easily replaced dedicated video game handhelds in the market for a good chunk of gamers. They are extremely portable, hold a decent battery life, and offer a wide range of applications and features beyond gaming.

Developers are keeping in mind the new handheld platform by offering unique video game titles and companion apps for their big AAA game releases. Going one step further, some developers have started to port classic titles from the PC and consoles straight to our handsets.

If you want to enjoy some big video game releases on your handset or tablet then check out these top five incredible video game ports.

BioShock

BioShock is an iOS exclusive game, for now. We understand that if this is your first time playing BioShock, then iOS might not be an ideal way of going at it but who can pass up taking BioShock on the go? Some of the gameplay mechanics have been simplified for on-screen controls. For instance, the ability to jump has been removed, but luckily it’s not something that is really missed or detracts from the BioShock experience.

Additionally, for those who can’t find themselves getting over the on-screen controls then devices like the Moga can grant players the ability to enjoy the game with a physical gamepad. Unfortunately, we’re uncertain when or if this game will make its way onto the Android platform.

Grand Theft Auto Series

How could we not put the Grand Theft Auto trilogy on this list? I’m still baffled that we’re able to play some of these games on our smartphones and since this video game franchise contains such a massive following, it’s a no-brainer that this port is doing well in the mobile platform.

There're a few video games available within the mobile platform but if you’re looking to bundle up these video games into one then you’ll want to check out the GTA: The Trilogy app. This single application includes Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Since its original release, the Star Wars film franchise has been met with a multitude of video game adaptations, though one title among the sea of others remains the most popular and cherished releases in the video game franchise, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

The game released in 2003 where players were met with a fun RPG, an epic narrative story and a nice selection of characters. Fans of the game can once again go through the epic journey right on their smartphone.

Bastion

At the time of this writing, Bastion is only available on iOS. If you have yet to play this fantastic indie video game that originally released on the Xbox 360, then do yourself a favor and make the purchase.

After the world has gone into chaos, our protagonist known simply as “The Kid” must make things right. Bastion features fun gameplay, fantastic art direction, and a narrator whose voice will accompany you throughout your adventure. It's not a game you want to miss.

Chrono Trigger

Chrono Trigger seriously takes me back, after all, it was originally released for the Super Nintendo back in 1995. Without spoiling too much of this massively popular JRPG, Chrono Trigger follows the protagonist Crono after a public demonstration of a teleportation device goes awry.

Crono takes the leap back in time to rescue his new acquainted friend Marle and bring her back to current time safely. Chrono Trigger on the iOS and Android remains the same as it had originally released back in 1995 so whether you’re a first-time player or a fan from years ago, you’ll definitely want to give the game a download.

XCOM: Enemy Within

The newest XCOM game from Firaxis Games has got to be one of the finest turn-based strategy experiences that the PC and consoles have to offer. It also translates remarkably well into a game for tablets, allowing players to use the touch-based interface to command their units instead of a mouse or gamepad.

Only slightly less graphically intensive than its console counterparts, the mobile version of the game contains just as much content and offers the same excitement fans of the strategy genre can come to expect from Firaxis.
