Starbound Tech Chest Locations

Starbound’s Tech are rare items that can be found hidden inside High-Tech Chests among planets scattered across the universe and act as upgrades for your player to equip. Each tech acquired throughout the game has a different attribute and function, and in this Starbound Tech Guide we’ll be detailing each of these functions and it’s locations following the new Furious Koala Update.

To equip a newly acquired tech item, visit your ships Tech Station and drag this item to one of the four available tech slots. This action will often unlock a new ability which you can activate for your character using F on your keyboard. Note: Players are only capable of activating one tech at a time and using this tech will consume your characters energy. Some of these tech items may be abilities but they may also unlock vehicles or special weapons. Follow on to discover more about the Starbound Tech Chests...



Starbound Vehicle and Movement Techs :

Energy Dash
This tech item will increase the speed in which a character can move and allows a player to traverse across a planet easily and quickly. Another great benefit to this newly acquired skill is that you can use this item to avoid fall damage right before you hit the ground. Double tap on “a” or “d” to move quickly in the associated direction. Characters activating this tech will leave a trail of white and blue behind them as they move.

Pulse Jump
When activated, this tech item allows characters to release a pulse of energy beneath their feet in order to perform a second jump whilst in the air to reach areas more difficult to access. Hit the space bar following a walk from a ledge, whilst in the air or just before landing to limit fall damage.

Human Mech
This tech equips a character witch a mech suit armed with HMGs and heavy armor. This item is useful for taking out enemies and big bosses, however please note that the mech suits damage is relative to your characters health bar.

Butterfly Boost
This tech is a handy item to have when aiming to reach areas that usually prove difficult to access from the characters normal jumping. The item enable players to fly in any chosen direction, incapsulating them inside a large purple bubble and leaving a trail of butterflies behind them as they glide away.

Rocket Jump
This tech item will boost your jumps from it’s standard current limit of 10 blocks all the way to 31 blocks up, which is conveniently brings you close to receiving damage from falling, inflicted from falling from 34 blocks. To activate this item press UP and JUMP at the same time whilst your character is still on the ground. This Rocket Jump Tech will consume 3 of your players energy.

Bubble Boost
Very similar to the butterfly boost, this bubble boost tech offers its characters with an extra boost followed by a trail of bubbles. To activate this tech item double tap on the space bar and hold. This item is a handy item for reaching areas which normally prove fairly difficult to reach via standard jumping.

Gravity Neutralizer
The Gravity Neutralizer allows characters to levitate horizontally whilst in mid-air. This skill can prove useful for mining areas which usually prove difficult to reach or to build in high places which would normally require a platform to be built. Similar to many of the other tech items, it can be used to avoid fall damage.

Morph Ball
This tech item allows a character to transform into a light blue ball and navigate via rolling. This item may wish to be activated when aiming to access pathways which are too small for the standard character to walk inside. They cannot jump very high and so you will need to switch back to your original form in order to overcome obstacles. Hit ‘F’ to activate the morph ball and stand between two blocks and hit ‘F’ again to return to your original form. 



Clicking whilst in the Morph Ball form will drop a mine, inflicting a considerable amount of damage, killing an armored player or causing 15 damage to players equipped with full silver armor. These mines detonate after a period of time or immediately on contact.

Skyrail Rider
This tech is currently the only craftable tech available throughout the game. Once you’ve crafted and equipped this tech, activate the item by clicking ‘F’ This Skyrail Rider Tech will equip your character with a skyrail harness and enable connection to travel upon skyrails.

Gravity Bubble
This Gravity Bubble Tech works very similarly to the Gravity Neutralizer, however this item will allow your character to ascend simultaneously whilst levitating inside a bubble, useful for fast travelling, reaching high items and exploring. Double tap and hold the space bar and use ‘A’ and ‘D’ to steer this bubble.

Targeted Blink
This tech item will transport your character to the location of your cursor regardless of the distance. Visit the in-game menu and adjust your zoom level to 2X to assist with long distance teleporting. Hit ‘F’ to activate the Targeted Blink Tech.

Apex Mech
This Apex Mech Tech is a new to the game following the Furious Koala update, and performs exactly the same as the Human Mech but with updated graphics. Hit ‘F’ to activate the Apex Mech.

Glitch Mech
This new Glitch Mech Tech appears as a knightly walker featuring a turret on top equipped with two cannons and a knights helmet. It performs exactly the same to the Human and Apex Mech but with upgraded graphics. Hit ‘F’ to activate this Glitch Mech.

Human Jeep
The human jeep is a great transportation device for fast travel across planets, highly appropriate for those needing to escape a boss or reach a location quick. The jeep can also jump relatively high, to activate this tech hit ‘F’.

Human Car
The Human Car Tech will place you inside of a red car appropriate for fast travel across planets. Damage can still be taken whilst in the car so try to avoid enemies if possible.
