Dark Souls 2: The Mundane Infusion Explained

The Mundane infusion in Dark Souls 2 has proven to be quite the little mystery: although it may even tell you on the infusion screen that the infused weapon will be terrible, it’s actually not quite what it appears in all cases.

What the Mundane Infusion actually does is make your base weapon damage weaker (50% weaker, I might add), but massively increases the physical damage scaling in tandem with your character’s stats. Interestingly enough, however, the Mundane Infusion takes all of your stats into account, meaning that the scaling is ultimately based upon the value of your weakest skill, and will change dependant on that value.

See below the corresponding values for lowest skill = physical damage scaling.

4 = 109
5 = 115
6 = 121
7 = 127
8 = 133
9 = 139
10 = 145  11 = 151
 12 = 157
 13 = 163
 14 = 169
 15 = 175
 16 = 181
17 = 187  18 = 193
 19 = 199
 20 = 205
 21 = 208
 22 = 211
 23 = 214
24 = 217  25 = 220
 26 = 223
 27 = 226
 28 = 229
 29 = 232
 30 = 235
31 = 236

It follows then that The Mundane Infusion works best with balanced characters using weapons that have a low base damage and low-to-medium scaling. If you are focussing on a particular group of stats and completely neglecting others, the Mundane Infusion will be a waste of time for you.

It’s also worth noting that the Mundane Infusion will be most effective while your lowest stat is between 1 and 20, as you can see above that after increasing a stat to level 20 the scaling increases by 3 points per level instead of 6, and after level 30 only increases by 1 point per level.

One of the best weapons to use the Mundane Infusion on is the Crossbow, as it has minimal damage scaling. With your lowest stat at the threshold of 20, this is the change you will see in ascending an upgraded Avelyn crossbow to a Mundane Avelyn:

Avelyn +10
Damage: 170 / Scaling: 34 / Total: 204

Mundane Avelyn +10
Damage: 85 / Scaling: 205 / Total: 290

The Mundane Infusion can also be useful when applied to other low damage/low scaling weapons, such as the Dagger:

Dagger
Damage: 57 / Scaling: 112 / Total: 169

Mundane Dagger
Damage: 28 / Scaling: 205 / Total: 233
