Shovel Knight: Bosses Walkthrough and Guide

Shovel knight is a new game that pays homage to the 8-bit era by being a classic action adventure game with retro graphics that appeal to both young and old alike. The game itself is an amalgam of both new and old concepts and comes from a studio called Yacht Club Games and is available to buy on both Wii U and 3DS now.

Shovel Knight has two main goals to complete on his quest; he must rescue his lost love and defeat the evil enchantress of the land. Wielding a ShovelBlade you must help the shovel knight to slash and dig his way through The Order of No Quarter, a group of evil knights sent by the enchantress to stop the shovel knights mission at any cost.

The Black Knight

The black knight uses his speed to run at you and attempt t o slash and slice you. He also contains an aerial jumping attack in which he jumps up to the side before landing shovel first on his enemies. He can also charge up a projectile blast but this happens to be his weakness as you can hit him before he can launch his blasts.

(Round 2)

When fighting the black knight again he is faster and stronger with more health and the ability to predict and dodge your attacks. One of the best attacks in your arsenal for this fight is the charage slash as it has a larger range than most of the knight’s attacks. In this round he can also throw bombs at you which can be deflected back using good reflexes.

(Round 3)

In the final battle against the black knight he is able to teleport out of the way of your attacks as well as using his usual dodging skills. His beams are also boosted and he can combine his projectiles with his new teleportation ability to cause a nuisance all over the stage. The knight can even grow wings now, rain fireballs and dodge bombs. By this point in the game you should’ve acquired many skills and with patience you will eventually defeat the knight once and for all allowing you to finally meet the enchantress.

Specter Knight

Specter is a lot tougher than the back knight, in fact he has both more hp and less weaknesses. He switches between two main attacks, the first consists of him throwing his scythe across the screen in a wide arc whilst he teleports across to catch it and the second lets him charge directly at you with his scythe lowered in order to slash you. Try to hit him once he has thrown his scythe to avoid being hit, once you’ve hit him a few times he will cut the lights and send skeletons after you so be careful.

King Knight

The king knight uses his strong legs to hop around the stage in an attempt to hit you. He also has a dash attack and a jumping smash attack which will stun your knight if he’s grounded at the time. The key to winning this battle is to counter attacked and to avoid his trumpet blasts, which are dangerous too.

Treasure Knight

The treasure knight uses a large harpoon or spear joined to his arm to drag himself across the room. He can even shoot his harpoon up or down in order to make himself evade attacks in mid air. This knight also has another trick up his sleeve in which he throws a treasure chest into the middle of the room but this chest is booby trapped with a whirlpool so avoid it at all costs. You will have to strike him from many diverse angles in order to defeat him.

Plague Knight

This knight attacks using explosives, which destroy the rocks on the stage and produce green flames, which are dangerous to the shovel knight. He can also change blocks into square containers full of purple liquid, which explode when a potion is thrown their way, and are also dangerous. As long as you avoid most of these attacks this knight should cause little to no problems.

Mole Knight

This is one of the fastest bosses and he uses his claws to dig under the stage very quickly allowing him to ambush you from either direction. This knight can also summon blocks, which can block your path or literally be launched straight at you. These blocks must be dug through in order to resume the battle. This knight also moves faster an faster as his health decreases so be careful.

Polar Knight

Polar knight can throw huge balls of snow at you, which you can be hit by if you don’t dodge by jumping or shoveling through. He can be hit from above whilst he is throwing snow but be weary of his counter attack once he starts to block your attacks. He can also produce ice spikes by smashing against the floor or digging up the ice. Once there are enough spikes he will try and drop icicles down on you. Avoid all of the spikes to secure victory.

Tinker Knight

The tinker knight has two forms with which to battle you. His first form seems pretty easy to defeat, as long as you dodge his wrench swings and keep attacking he should soon fall which makes the floor collapse too. Once in this new area the Tinker knight emerges in his next form, which is he inside a robot.

The robot form is not much more difficult to defeat but can be dangerous if approached wrongly. The tactic here is to get towards the head of the robot and keep pogo jumping. When attacking the head the only attack that can really harm you are the rockets that are fired from the shoulder. Keep up the assault, making sure to climb back up if you fall and he will soon be destroyed for good.

Propeller Knight

The propeller knight has an effective way to defend against your pogo attacks, as he can use his propellers to launch you into the air and will try to hit you as you fall. He can also try to blow you off of the stage or suck you towards him but these are opportunities to actually attack him from above. As long as you dodge these attacks and keep out of range of the airship’s attacks that he calls in as he nears death, this battle should be fairly straightforward.

The Enchantress

As the final boss of shovel knight the enchantress is extremely dangerous and should be approached with care. She will try to hit you with magic from all directions but deflecting these beams back at her can be dangerous as if they hit the floor they will destroy it, leaving less ground for you to stand on. The enchantress can also go below the platform and fire at you from underneath, which also destroy the platform but simultaneously fix them with purple fire. This fire can hurt your knight so stay clear and keep attacking.

Once the first round is over, the enchantress comes back stronger looking for more trouble. In this phase of the battle she can only be damaged directly at the top of her head so you must avoid her projectiles until you see an opening and bounce off of your friends shield to strike before she rises again. Repeat this until she starts to produce attacks which follow you around the screen. These attacks must be evaded until your friend holds the shield again which is your cue to attack. Also remember that this boss gets faster as her health decreases so make use of all your relics and abilities until you have saved the world from darkness once and for all.
