How to unlock PvP in Destiny

Bungie and Activision’s latest project, Destiny, could be tackled as a solo adventure, however there are numerous opportunities for multiplayer gameplay. Despite the lack of cross platform functionality, so no Xbox One vs Xbox 360 combat, players are encouraged to make their Destiny journey a social adventure. Playstation users have had access to the Destiny beta for a few days, they’ll be back online tomorrow with fresh Xbox players and they will all be able to take part in one of the PvP modes. Destiny fans are able to play Control already and the likes of Salvage, Skirmish and Rumble will be available upon the release date September 9th.

PvP practicalities

But how do players take part in player vs player combat? Well first you need to work out where the Crucible is, as that is where all of the PvP activity is centered. However you will not be able to access the Crucible until you have complete the mission ‘The Last Array’ on planet Earth. Once you have finished the mission, go to orbit and the PvP zone will be on the right side of the Earth. Before rushing into multiplayer action, it would be wise to make your way to the Tower and collect bounty quests from the bounty board. They will provide you with objectives to fulfill during your PvP matches.

When it comes to PvP matches in Destiny you will take your character and equipment into battle with up to 11 other players, fighting in the two teams of six format. There is no need to fret at this news! Guardians are brought together on the basis of their skill and both incoming and outgoing damage is standardized which helps give every player a chance to succeed. You won’t have to face an unbeatable opponent, nor will you have to put any weaklings out of their misery, so everyone can improve their skills and take part in a fair, challenging fight.

Control

The only player vs player mode that Destiny fans can access in the beta is Control, which will stay in the game so any Hints and Tips you discover now will be useful in the full version of Destiny come September. But in order to know how to win a Control match, you first need to understand its setup. The primary goal in Control PvP is for your team to score 20,000 points because the first to do this wins the game. If neither team achieves this goal there is a timer and when it runs to zero the team with more points wins. That may be the prime target, but it’s how you get points that makes this game interesting. Not only will you score points for killing opponents, the team’s score will also increase when you assist and neutralize enemies, as well as taking the Control Points. The points allocated per kill, assist or neutralization varies, but they also differ within each type of maneuver. More points are given to teams that deal with their enemies beyond the basic kill. So you and your team are rewarded with a bigger score by taking out opponents using headshots, grenades or Super and Heavy weapons. But that isn’t the only way to increase your points per action in this Destiny PvP mode. Once your team takes over a Control Point you will notice a bonus modifier applied to every kill and that bonus will increase with every Control Point your team captures too.

Rewards

As you see success in the Crucible, your Crucible rank with increase which will grant you with new equipment. Select weapons, items and armour from the quartermaster’s collection downstairs in the Crucible to make the most of your PvP winnings. Before you do, make sure to check out our Destiny Armour Breakdown guide. Each item you select will cost you Crucible marks, but in return you get powerful weapons that you can use in another player vs player match to earn a greater Crucible rank. You see, there is more to gain from Destiny PvP than just being able to defeat friends and keep your claim as the best Guardian.
