Another year, and Ubisoft blesses us with another Asssassin's Creed, and Syndicate looks to have an even more interesting and lively environment than Unity's spectacular and epic skylines and famous buildings of Paris. Syndicate is set in 1868 London, and the trailers released display this new location and all of its well-known landmarks, showing the large eloquent buildings that stuck out as being so encapsulating in Unity, along with the poor and grimy streets the working class are forced to dwell in. As well as this intriguing scenery, Syndicate brings many new and exciting gameplay features, which look far too interesting to play around with to miss. Here are the five main reasons why you should be as enthusiastic towards the new Assassin's Creed as I am.

As well as this intriguing scenery, Syndicate brings many new and exciting gameplay features, which look far too interesting to play around with to miss. Here are the five main reasons why you should be as enthusiastic towards the new Assassin's Creed as I am.
The new and unique setting of Victorian London presents many new directions for Syndicate's style and overall mood to go towards. From the gameplay trailer we can see how brutal and dirty the streets of London are, and Syndicate's gameplay and tone look to reflect this. The character of Jacob Frye is impetuous and "down-to-earth", and he seems to represent the feelings and lives of many at the time, where gangs in the streets that are desribed by Marc-Alexis Côté, creative director at Ubisoft Quebec, as "areas the police would not set foot", dominate and use brutal force to gain control of the streets. Jacob fights with a brutal ferocity in gameplay, getting up close and personal to fight his opponents one-on-one, with fast and hard-hitting attacks that look very satisfying to use.
Many side missions in Syndicate will make use of the Frye's having gangs, with Jacob and Evie having to do these missions to recruit new gang members. The gameplay trailer shows Jacob save an ally from being brutally executed, who then continues to help him, and also shows the large-scale "gang war", in which Jacob fights with his gang against "Bloody Nora" and her gang. This looks to be a way for the assassins to take over the city gradually from the powerful Templars, and looks to be epic every time.
1868 is the latest an Assassin's Creed has ever been set (bar the modern-day segments of past games), so this coupled with the fact that Syndicate is set in Victorian London, where technology was rapidly advancing constantly, leads to lots of interesting opportunities for new weapon and gameplay design and features. In the short amount of gameplay we have seen, many new features have been shown and made to run cohesively with the classic Assassin's Creed gameplay and controls. Seeing Jacob fight on top of trains in the release trailer certainly seems incredibly exciting, and I can't wait to be jumping across moving train carriages. Of course, the most notable gameplay feature is the ability to drive carriages around the streets of London. I personally think this is a fantastic idea, with this new way of transport saving enormous amounts of time as you explore the intricate and detailed environment of London. Not to forget how awesome those carriage chases look as well!
Jacob and Evie Frye are the main protagonists of AC: Syndicate, and being twins, you get to play as them both throughout the game. This is the first time this kind of character interaction has been available in an Assassin's Creed game, and will no doubt immerse you even more into the world of Syndicate, and this connection between the characters will certainly have an important role in the story and journey of the characters in the game. Jacob and Evie compliment each other perfectly, with Jacob being more brash and head-first, and probably more fitting in the back streets of London, while Evie being all about planning and using careful tactics and stealth. No doubt each will feel uniquely different to play as, and will bring a varied experience in the way actions and events take place. This will bring a compelling story, I'm sure, as we are brought to know each character more and more as the story goes on.
Due to the 1868 time period, expect familiar faces to appear now and then, also. Famous people like Darwin and Dickins will appear in the game, and affect and influence the story each character experiences.
The assassins' arsenals have had a serious upgrade, it looks like gameplay is going to be even more exhilarating than in previous games, giving the player even more ways to overcome certain challenges.
The rope launcher looks to be very handy, as it helps Jacob and Evie climb up buildings and traverse rooftops far more quickly than previous assassins have been able to, with Marc-Alexis saying "with this new tool you can climb the highest building in seconds". This will undoubtedly be very useful in getting around the city quickly, and seems to play an important part in stealth also, as shown in the trailer, where the rope launcher is used as a zip line over to a guard on another rooftop. Gone are the days of walking around a massive building, looking for the way up, only to fall down and have to climb it all over again...
Another tool that Jacob uses in the trailer is the trusty ol' throwing knife, which seems to be far more brutal and visceral in its usage than in previous games, again fitting with the gritty environment of the back alleys of London. Throwing knifes will again be vital for stealth, due to how quiet and subtle they are. However, throwing knifes can also be used to make a lot of noise, through the new feature of using the environment against enemies. In the trailer, Jacob throws his knife at a suspended net of barrels, which fall and squash an unsuspecting enemy.
Hallucinogenic darts are also employed by Jacob, a significant upgrade from the (also handy) darts in previous games. Jacob shoots the dart at a fire drum the guards are crowding around, which causes the quards to begin hallucinating and to attack one another in the confusion. Jacob takes advantage of this by using it as a distraction while he attacks from behind.

Assassin's Creed is of course on display at the up-and-coming E3. Ubisoft has announced that a select few will be able to play Assassin's Creed Syndicate at E3, but even more exciting is the fact that the Ubisoft Quebec team is touring across Europe on the 16th-18th June, where people can sign up to play the game also. The team is touring in London, Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam, Berlin, Milano and Stockholm, and in Sydney on the 17th-19th June and in Moscow on the 3rd-5th of July. Go to www.assassinscreed.com/thetour to see if you can get the chance to play Syndicate early, and to see if the game is as appealing as it seems to be from what we know so far!
