It seems like we rarely ever see Link or Toon Link in the FGC tournaments for Super Smash Bros. He seems like a low-tier character and I don’t even play the game that much. However, some players came up with a tactical and technical way to make the most out of both Toon Link and normal Link’s combo abilities in the newest Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U.
Shoryuken spotted the short two minute video from YouTuber LordWilliam1234. The video showcases a few ways to insta-kill opponents using Link’s bombs and sword slashes. At first glance they seem like great combos and could very well be the sort of tactics that could earn you a win in a short amount of time. Check out the video below.
Now, again, I’m not a pro-Smash player and I’ve only watched a few tournaments, but I find it hard to believe that you could use Link – with those particular combos – in a match against a high-tier player who will stand around long enough to let a player execute those moves.
I imagine there needs to be better initiators. The starting combos are way too slow, and it seems like a well timed block by an opponent off the starting combo would completely ruin the whole string. Given that Smash Bros. doesn’t have physics to reward dive-kicks, it would seem like a starting dash attack after charging the bomb would be more convenient. But, as I mentioned, I’m no pro player and I certainly don’t play either Link, so a more advanced player would probably be able to offer more advanced techniques.
Still, it’s not a bad starting point for players looking to expand their horizons and grow their skills with Toon Link and big Link. Who knows, maybe we’ll see a greater presence of Link at the finals at Evo 2015… maybe?
Anyway, Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS is available right now.
