So you’ve got Dragon Age: Inquisition in your system or on your hard drive. You’ve created your character, and you’re well on your way to closing the rifts. But then you’ve set up camp and are looking at one of your companions over the fire, your eyes connecting as “Do You Believe in Life After Love” by Cher plays, and you reminisce about all the times you talked to each other… sorry, lost my train of thought. The point is, you’ve connected with one of your companions, and you want to take your friendship to the next level. We’ve got a primer and who you can romance and what’ll lead to that special connection you’ve always wanted.
Just to be clear, not everyone in Inquisition is a romance option. Varric, Leiliana, Cole, and Vivienne are unavailable for the sexy times. You also won’t be able to marry your future paramour because, you know, demons are coming out of the sky and shit. You can’t just stop everything and make everyone attend your wedding. Not until the modders get to work on that, anyway.
Solas is an elf mage whom you first meet when you start the game. He’s very open-minded about the Fade, and spends his time learning more about it. He’s an introvert, but he’s also witty, and he’s got some kickass elemental abilities. If you want to romance him, you can only be a female elf Inquisitor only. If that doesn’t sit well with you, then maybe he’s not the man for your dreams.
This lovely woman is a member of the Chantry and was so lucky to hear Varric retell Hawke’s story in Dragon Age II. You meet her at the start of the game, where she yells in your face demanding to know about your connection to the Breach. But it’s not the worst way to meet a potential paramour, as most women on OkCupid will tell you, and underneath her eyes and dry humor, there’s a chance that maybe she’ll grow to love you. Cassandra, unlike Solas, isn’t race-gated as far as your Inquisitor, but you do have to be at least a male to make things work with her. Why not discuss tactics with her at the war room? They say a true couple discusses work off the clock.
A Grey Warden, Blackwall gets instant points in the handsome department for looking like a hot lumberjack. Seriously, look at that epic beard of his. I like to think of him as medieval Ron Swanson. And he can be all yours for the simple cost of being a female Inquisitor. You two can go out for a night on the town, kill some demons, and then he’ll create new daggers with their bones. And they say romance is dead.
The Iron Bull is a Qunari mercenary with a wicked axe and a love for combat. But don’t be intimidated by his horns and his muscles. He’s actually pretty chill and loves to drink and bone after a long day of killing. He’s also pansexual, meaning he’s attracted to all races and genders. No matter your parts and the size of your horns or lack thereof, the Bull will take you for a ride. Love is in the air when you’re out smashing heads and getting wasted.
Dorian was born into prestigious family and has the magic to show for it. But his opposition toward everything his homeland Tevinter stands for makes him an outcast, even though he bears it with pride. He’s the first male romance option that’s exclusively for men, so if that and his wit and fantastic mustache are what draw you in, go nuts. Just remember to not play him in chess if you suck, otherwise that might be a relationship killer.
Sera is a manic pixie dream girl. Except she loves to take the piss out of authority, will put an arrow in the eye of anyone who pisses her off, and has a fascination with butts. So she’s not so much a manic pixie dream girl as she is the love child of Merida from Brave and Tina from Bob’s Burgers. If you’re a lover of elves and butts, why not ask to go butt-looking with her? Provided you’re a woman, of course.
One of your advisors, Josephine is the daughter of a noble Antivan family. She knows how to forge relations with grace and enjoys herself a challenge. She’s fully committed to the cause of the Inquisition and will do whatever she can to make sure you succeed. If you’re turned on by her class and commitment, you can pursue her. Like the Iron Bull, she’s available to all races and genders. Elf, dwarf, Qunari, male, female– she can be yours if you like.
Remember Cullen from Dragon Age Origins? He’s certainly become something good looking, wouldn’t you agree? As the Breach gets opened, Cassandra recruits him into the Inquisition and makes him the leader of the military part of the organization and tactical advisor. Being a human or elf female will lead you to take the ‘C’ train all the way to Love City.
As a general rule for romances in Dragon Age games, select the heart dialogue choice during conversations with who you desire. Otherwise, you’ll just remain friends. There may be points where another one of your companions decides to be proactive depending on how nice you are to them. If they’re who you want, you can decide to continue to the romance, and if you aren’t, just tell them that you want to be friends. They won’t approve, but why lie to them, right?
