CityVille Walkthrough

Unofficial CityVille Guide by Mongoose General for

CityVille is a social Facebook game developed by the all-conquering Zynga development studio, responsible for FarmVille. It has also just been released for Google . In terms of the type of game, it is most similar to SimCity, and indeed looks a lot like it from a distance. The idea behind the game is for you to construct your own city from the ground up. The social element comes with 'Neighbors' who are able to move into your city and build on certain plots, while you can do the same with theirs.

CityVille can be found on Facebook by following this link:

Getting Started

The first thing to do, after agreeing to the various terms and conditions and allowing the game to interact with your Facebook account, is to name your city. This is how it will be identified and introduced to all of your friends, so give it something unique and characterful.

Tutorial

There is a built-in tutorial provided by Zynga to get people into the game who maybe haven't played a city building game before. This tutorial is provided by Samantha, a level 20 AI player (one that is controlled by the computer). You can visit her city whenever you like as she is automatically provided as your first neighbor. To do so, just click on her and select 'Visit'. This is also how you would visit any of your real friends in CityVille.

Starting Screen

You begin the game with 7000 Coins and 5 City Cash. By visiting Samantha (the AI tutorial player) you are rewarded with 100 Coins, 3 Energy, and 1 XP. You can collect this every 24 hours for a single visit.

Coins

Coins are the 'free' currency in CityVille. You earn these through the basic mechanics of the game. The number of coins that you currently have are indicated in the top left-hand corner of the screen. You can buy more coins using your own real money by clicking on the 'Add Coins and Cash' button. Every player starts the game with 7,000 Coins to get them started, and you can see when you are earning them if you notice Coins drifting out from buildings and crops. Click on them to bank the Coins immediately.

City Cash

This is the 'premium' currency in CityVille. The game itself is free, so Zynga make their money by selling City Cash, which is needed for certain aspects of the game. With City Cash, you can buy exclusive items, hire workers for your community buildings, reduce waiting time and get items that otherwise can only be received as gifts.

You can play CityVille without ever buying Cash, but you will not experience everything that CityVille has to offer and will eventually hit its limit.

The amount of City Cash that you currently have is indicated in the top left-hand corner of the screen. You can purchase more City Cash by clicking on the 'Add Coins and Cash' button.

You start the game with 5 City Cash. You can get more, for free, by levelling up - normally 1 per level. Sometimes you will see notifications in game to complete surveys or take part in offers to get City Cash - only respond to these if they are presented to you in game, do not do so if they are anywhere else or from an untrusted source. If none of these options are enough, and the chances are that they won't be, you will have to buy more City Cash with your own money.

Purchasing Coins and Cash

You can buy more Coins and City Cash by clicking on the 'Add Coins and Cash' button below the currency icons. These have to be bought using real money, and the transactions can be processed using Facebook Credits, PayPal or a Credit/Debit card.

Cheats for Free Cash and Free Coins

Don't even bother following any links that promise you free cash and free coins, especially if you have to hand over your account details. Cash and Coins can only be provided by Zynga in in the ways outlined above. There are no cheats, hacks etc... To cheat your way to free dosh.

Energy

You have Energy up to a rating of 12 when you start the game. Once it is all used up, it recharges at a rate of 1 Energy every 5 minutes. As you progress through the game the capacity of your energy increases from the 12 you are originally given as you level up. You are given 1 extra to your maximum Energy each time you level up.

Energy is required for building, harvesting, visiting Neighbors, and in fact, pretty much every activity in CityVille (except planting crops, which you are permitted to do for free). Whenever you undertake a task, you lose 1 Energy. Harvesting crops costs 1 Energy, as does pulling up dead crops. Buildings require more Energy to fully construct, so be sure to inspect this rating before undertaking any construction work. You will need to click on the construction site multiple times to keep them building - using 1 Energy with each click.

You can see the amount of Energy that you currently have, indicated by the bar in the center of the screen. Hover over it to see your maximum Energy level. If you run out of Energy, you will either have to wait 5 minutes for one piece to recharge, or use some of the other techniques for getting Energy quickly.

A good way to get more energy is to give Batteries to your Neighbors. This will create Energy for them and, if they return to favor for you, is a massive boost to your own energy supplies. Getting a network of hard-working, regular-gifting Neighbors is one of the best ways to make the most of your Energy.

If you click on a building and see a lightning icon, click on it, as this will give you instant Energy.

Spend your energy wisely - don't start too many construction projects at the same time, especially in the beginning stages of the game as you will find that you soon run out of energy and are stuck with half finished buildings. You'll also not be able to collect cash from your businesses etc... when you have zero energy, so spend wisely!

Energy Tips

Here are some tips on gaining energy in CityVille.

1) Wait come back now and again.
Your energy bar is topped up by 1 every 5 minutes so this is a slow but sure way to get your energy levels back up.

2) Level up
Make sure you have depleted your energy stores just before/as you level up as levelling up will restore a big chunk of your energy bacr when you level up.

3) Visit friends
You can get an energy boost when visiting friends.

4) Energy batteries
If you have some cash you can get these energy batteries and utilise them yourself or start a sharing network with some friends to distribute these big energy boosters.

5) Get lucky
Yes sometimes general gameplay actions will result in you being given a boost of energy

Levelling Up

Each time you level up, you are rewarded with 1 City Cash, and 1 extra Energy added onto your maximum Energy. You can also unlock new items and gifts. You may notice blue stars drifing out of various parts of your city. These indicate XP as it is being produced. XP is earned by completing tasks such as building, visiting a Neighbor, or harvesting crops. Keep an eye on the Live Feeds for Bonus XP and other promotions while playing the game.

First level up after building first house

You can see your current level by looking at the meter on the right hand side. This is shown by the number in the star. The actual bar itself that fills up is how close you are to the next level, or the amount of XP that you currently possess.

Bonus Bar

The bonus bar dictates the amount of bonus your attain for completing various tasks and collecting on your city's produce. It increases based on the amount going on at any one time in your city, and at high speed. If you collect lots of Goods at once, for example, it will go up. This makes it a good idea to plan your activies to coincide with one another.

Whenever you get Goods, Coins, XP, Energy or Collection Items within six seconds of them appearing, your Bonus Bar increases. You must click on the icons for it to count as you getting them. It works like the Level indicator, so the progress of the bar shows you how close you are to the next stage. The higher the Bonus Bar stage, the more money you get for each bonus.

Bonus Bar

It is important not to click too quickly, as the bar fills up slowly. Once you have one sub-six second click registering on the Bonus Bar, you should wait until the bar has stopped before doing another one. This saves you from wasting any clicks. Obviously though you don't want to wait too long or the reward is collected anyway.

You may notice the Bonus Bar flashing red. If it is doing this, the game is warning you that you need to click on something or your bonus will run out and you will be given coins to its current level. Anything produced using Energy should count towards the Bonus Bar.

There are 10 Bonus Bar levels, with Masterful being Level 10.

Goods

Goods are required to keep your businesses running adequately. You produce Goods with certain buildings and by harvesting at farms. Look out for crates coming out of buildings or fields and click on them to get the Goods instantly. They are indicated by a crate icon. The amount of Goods that you have currently in storage is shown next to the Energy meter in the middle of the screen. Mouseover the icon to see the maximum storage space that you have. You can build more barns/silos to increase this number.

If you see a crate icon above any buildings, hover over it and you will see if that building needs to be restocked. You can stock up by clicking on the crate.

Crop management and harvesting is important when it comes to getting more goods, so make sure you pay attention to your crops and pick crops which are suited to your style of play. For example if you are going to be around for a while, pick strawberries to grow and harvest as these take the shortest amount of time to grow and harvest. However, as it takes 1 energy to harvest the strawberries, you may find that you run out of energy quite quickly if you grow too many.

Storage

You can store items that you do not have room for, or may want to save for later, by clicking on the 'Inventory' button. You should then click on the item that you want to store and it will be saved for use in the future. You can get it back by revisiting the Inventory screen and clicking the item to place it in your city once again. If you really don't want to keep an item, you can select the removal button to delete it permanently.

Goals

During the game you will be given various tasks and objectives to complete. Doing so earns you XP and Coins, and is required to unlock certain items and different types of buildings. You can see current goals on the left hand side of the screen. You can get the lowdown on what each task entails by clicking on its icon. This will also show you how close you are to achieving that particular goal. You can see tips for completing each goal at the bottom of its menu.

Look out for the new goals signal which pops up on the top left of the playing area

There will be at least 3 goals underway at any time. More will always be available for you to undertake. It is possible to rush through goals, effectively skipping them, by spending City Cash.

Having completed a goal, you are able to post a message to the Live Feed that allows your Neighbors to earn XP, Energy or Coins as a result of your efforts. This is a good idea, as it encourages your friends to reciprocate the action whenever they complete a goal.

First Goal - Build a neighbourhood

Train Station

Each city has a Train Station. This is where you can buy or sell your Goods. You need to be at least Level 5 before you can interact with the Train Station and sell or buy Goods with your Neighbors.

If you run out of Goods in your city, it can be quite disastrous. For this reason, you can use the Train Station to keep the wheels of your economy turning. To do this, click the train platform on your screen and you will be given the option to either sell or buy. If buying goods, once you have selected the deal you want, you need to wait 5 minutes for the train to arrive with your goods. Because of this, it isn't a completely quick fix for supply problems, but is the fastest way to resolve such issues. Once the train arrives, a new icon will show at the top of the Goals list. It will then physically turn up at the platform. Click on the image above the train engine and you will be able to collect the goods.

If you are running low on Goods this is a great way to get more fast.

You can also sell goods, which you do in the same way as buying them, except you select the Sell option from the Train Station menu. This time, the train will appear straight away to pick up the goods, and return shortly with your money.

This means even if you develop a city which creates a surplus of goods, you will be able to get the all important coins from them.

To build a road over the train tracks, you need to put one piece of road on either side, before the game will draw the road across for you.

Population

It is important to manage the population of your city. To progress, you will need to increase your population. To do this, you can buy new buildings for the community in your city to use. You can view your current population by hovering your mouse over the population indicator just above the Neigbor menu at the bottom of the screen. The emoticon will change from happy to sad depending on what your people think of the city, if they think you need more infrastructure, for example.

Building

Obviously the central point in creating a city is to build, build, and then build some more. You can buy new buildings from the 'Build' menu, accessible through the button in the bottom right-hand corner. Here, you can select houses, communal buildings, decorations and businesses to build. Pick a category and then select the building you wish to buy. Some buildings are locked until you have levelled up sufficiently, added enough Neighbors, or completed certain other goals. There are a few of these which you can only buy with City Cash, to try and give them an exclusive feeling.

Build Menu

Once the purchase has been made, you can select a plot of land on which to place the building. It is important to try and make sure they are on roads so that people can access them.

Houses

To increase your population, you obviously need accommodation for your citizens. There is a 'Houses' section in the 'Build' menu, which is where you can find all of these options. One of the main benefits from building houses, apart from growing your population, is that you get taxes from the people living in them. You are given these taxes at varying intervals.

When placing a house, make sure it is connected to a road so that the people who buy it can actually move in! You should also endeavour to build houses together so that you do not have to build lots of individual roads out to them.

Building Houses

A house will take at least 2 Energy to build. Click the construction site as required to use 1 Energy to initiate construction. You will be given Coins, XP or Energy each time this happens. Eventually you will run out of space for new houses, so will need to expand your city.

Businesses

Businesses are needed to keep your city in the money. They require Goods to function, and different businesses are unlocked for use as you level up. Select the business from the Build menu and put it on a road. New businesses need an influx of Goods, so click the crate icon to stock it up manually once building is complete. You will also see a dollar-sign above certain businesses. You can click this to collect all of the money earned so far. The icon means that this business has sold out of Goods, and is waiting for you to restock it. Collect it quickly enough to fill your Bonus Bar.

The first business you are prompted to build will be the bakery. The game makes things quite simple and prompts you exactly what to do. But if you are stuck then you'll find the bakery option in the 'Build' menu (see bottom right of play area). Once it is build you need to deliver goods to it. Just hover over your build bakery and click to make this deliver, then sit back and watch your customers arrive.

Building Your Bakery

As well as Coins, businesses release 'collection items'. These are business specific, and make it worthwhile to have as many different businesses as possible in your city.

You can name each of your businesses, which your friends and Neihbors will also be able to see.

Depending on the stage you are at in the game and your available resources, different businesses will be available to be build. In the screenshot below we have a bakery, pub, coffee shop and flower stall, which are four of the most easily available businesses.

Building more businesses

Community Buildings

Before too long, you will receive a message telling you that a community building is required to increase your population further. You can select a community building from the Build menu. The first one you have is the City Hall. Put it wherever you like (must still be on a road) but you will have to hire people to help you complete the construction, making building community projects different to any other construction work.

After building enough houses you will be prompted to build a community building

When you place the building, you will be presented with options for filling the positions required to complete the task. You can either hire Neighbors to assist you in the job - they will have to accept your invite before it counts (you receive Coins for helping out your friends, so they do have an incentive to do it), or you will have to spend 1 City Cash each time to get Samantha (the AI Neighbor) to help you. Some friend she is! This does allow you to effectively rush completion of the building, however.

Once all the positions are filled, click the building again to see that it has increased your population limit.

Franchises

Franchises are businesses that contract out their products to others in return for some coins. Certain businesses in CityVille allow you to create franchises in this manner. The main benefit of this, is that you can create a plot of land for franchises and your Neighbors can effectively move into your city. You can do the same in theirs if they have made the land available. You are limited to one franchise for each business, but you can put them in lots of your Neighbors' cities.

To move into land in one of your Neighbors' cities, click on the plot of land and select a franchised business to place there. Make sure it is on a road so that customers can get to it.

As with all other businesses, you will need to provide it with Goods and take the profits from it once the business is sold out. Because it is a franchise, you will get about 20 percent of the profits, though this depends on the business in question and your level at the time.

Eventually you will be given the ability to construct a HQ for the franchised business. This option is in the inventory menu and takes a lot of Energy and money to build. A HQ will prevent you from having to visit your Neighbor's city each time you want to see how the franchise is doing. Place it in your city and click on it to see a list of franchises and restock them from this central location.

You can see the Franchise menu without having a HQ building by visiting the inventory screen and then click the headquarters button. This will allow you to do basically the same tasks as if you had built a HQ.

With a headquarters in place, you can get a bonus once a day, which you can also post to the Live Feed. This goes up as you restock more. Every time you get a bonus, an extra floor is placed on the top of the HQ. This means you can get some amazing-looking skyscrapers in your city.

Franchises in Your City

People can ask you to build businesses in your city, so look out for messages on the Live Feed for these requests.

To build the empty plot which encourages Neighbors to franchise in your city, go Build, then the Businesses menu, and select the first option. This is free and is just a blank plot. Put it up next to a road so that people can access it, and you can then either message your Neighbors, inviting them to build there, or you can wait for them to arrive.

The owner of the city with the franchise in can always restock it if the owner of the business forgets. Otherwise, you can send a reminder for them to keep their end of the bargain.

Crops

Crops work in tandem with businesses to provide the center of your city's infrastructure in CityVille. At the beginning of a new city, you have a barn to store Goods in, and a set of four plots to plant seeds on.

The best crop to begin with is Strawberries, as they cost just 20 Coins and take only 5 minutes to grow. The next quickest is 1 hour, so you can see why the Strawberries are so good for getting started. The longer a crop takes to mature, generally the more money you will get from harvesting it.

Harvesting a crop of strawberries

Once the crop is ready to be harvested, all you need to do is click on it. This will sap 1 Energy but will reward you with Coins, Goods, Energy, XP and collectible items (on occasion).

After a crop has been harvested, you can replant the plot by clicking it and selecting the crop you would like to grow this time around. Again, it costs no energy to plant seeds, just to harvest them.

You can see how long until your crop is ready for harvest by mousing over the plot. This allows you to plan for the influx of XP and Goods, as well as making sure you pick the crop and re-seed it as quickly as possible. Doing so obviously increases the efficieny of your farming practice.

Bear in mind that while Coins are the main reason for planting crops, you get Goods for harvesting them, so they can really be used to keep the infrastructure of your city in gear.

Growing some carrots

When a crop is not harvested quickly enough, it will spoil. You then have to remove the dead crops (which is free) Make sure you plan for when your crops come into harvest, otherwise you may be caught with no energy left and have your hard work wasted with the crops spoiling, unless a Neighbor saves the day.

Saving Spoiled Crops

There is one way to save spoiled crops, and that is to get a Neighbor to visit your city. They have the ability to revive the crops for you. You still have to harvest the crop, however, or it will just wilt again. Reviving crops counts as one of the 5 tasks that a visitor to a city can perform.

Decorations

Building decorations in your city makes it look nice, but also adds to your bonuses. If you place a decoration within 3 squares of a business or farm, it will multiply anything produced by it. One strategy by gamers is to move a business to an area where there are more decorations before cashing in on its produce.

Roads

The decorations menu is also where you'll find the asphalt for building more roads. You will still be limited in terms of road placement to the size of your current City and obstacles that are int he way, for example trees.

Expansion

Once you have filled up all of your available space, you will want to buy new land to expand your city into. To do this, access the Build menu, and select an Expansion. You can then pick where you would like to expand.

Expansions are very expensive, requiring Zoning Permits, which need to be bought with City Cash, or requested as gifts from friends, as well as a lot of Coins.

Do not follow links on the Internet for free or unlimited Zoning Permits, as these are not genuine and will only result in your losing a permit from your inventory!

Collections

As your move through playing CityVille, you will get collection items. These, when combined with 4 other similar items (so 5 in total), make an entire collection. There are 32 collections to get in CityVille. Collectibles can be found from many of the businesses and activities undertaken in game. The collectible you get depends on the activity in question, so harvesting Strawberries gives you Strawberry collectibles, for example. You should aim to have every possible crop and business on offer in CityVille to allow you not only to complete your own collections, but to be able to gift needed items to your Neighbors. Note that you can get many of the same collectible, at which point you should try to gift them to friends who need them.

Once a collection has been completed, you can cash it in for XP, Coins and sometimes new items to put in your city. Even once you have fulfilled a complete collection, you can cash it in and get the same one again.

If you are missing a particular item from a collection, you can place it in your 'Wishlist'. The wishlist is available by clicking the blue icon in the bottom left-hand corner. You can have 5 items in your wishlist, and are able to post it to the Live Feed. This allows your Neighbors to then gift the required items to you.

Neighbors

Neighbors are vital for having a good city. By using them, you can get XP, Coins, items, Energy and Goods. At the bottom of the screen you will see the Neighbor menu. This ranks your Neighbors, while displaying the AI friend on the far right. You can visit your Neighbors by clicking them and selecting Visit. You can also give Gifts by clicking on a Neighbor. In return, your Neighbors can give you gifts, and Energy if you have run out.

Adding Neighbors

To add new Neighbors to your game, you can click the Invite Friends option at the top of the main screen. You can then invite other Facebook users into your CityVille game. You have to authorise people before they are able to visit your city.

Visiting Neighbors

Having built up a healthy list of Neighbors, you can select their image at the bottom and pick the option to Visit.

Once in your Neighbor's city, you get a reward each day for visiting. This is 100 Coins, 3 Energy and 1 XP every day that you visit that Neighbor. The idea is to encourage social gaming as much as possible. There are also 5 goals that you can complete while in anyone else's city. These get both you and your Neighbor some rewards.

On each visit to your Neighbor, you are given Energy that you can use while there, but which does not cost you any of your own actual energy. On each visit, you will have 5 Energy to use in this way. You can see it listed at the left-hand side of the screen.

Neighbor Tasks

Tasks that you can do while in your Neighbor's city include harvesting and reviving crops, as well as cutting down trees to clear space. Having done the task, both the Neighbor and the visitor gets rewards. You will get 25 Coins and 1 Reputation point for each task. If you do all 5 tasks, you can get 125 Coins and 5 Reputation points on each visit, plus the money for the daily visit to that Neighbor. This increases as you progress through the game.

When visiting a Neighbor, or when a Neighbor is in your city, their movements are shown in blue. This allows you to see, live, what people are doing in your city.

You do not have to accept what anyone does in your city, and likewise your Neighbors can decline the work you have done in theirs. When exploring your city, you will see a Neighbor's profile picture if they have made changes to your city in that location. You must click it and select 'Accept' to authorise the changes. With that done, the changes will then happen in real time and any rewards will be earned.

The other key thing that people can do while visiting their Neighbors is to start a franchise in someone else's city.

If you are trying to visit all of your Neighbors, which is a good idea to maximise profits, do it in the order they appear on the bottom of the screen, from left to right. This will mean you don't waste time visiting the same one twice in one day.

Reputation Points

Reputation Points are collected when performing tasks in a Neighbor's city. The 5 tasks that you can perform each time give you a Reputation Point for each one. This contributes towards your Reputation Level. You can see this level at the top of the screen, indicated by the heart icon. As you level up in Reputation, you get bigger bonuses for visiting and completing tasks in your Neighbor's city.

Gifts

You are able to send a gift to your Neighbors every day. This is completely free, not taking up any of your supplies. The more you progress through CityVille, the greater the variety of items that you can send.

Items that you have received from friends will be placed in your main inventory for use later.

Mystery Gift

Your friends can gift you the Mystery Gift, which has a chance of resulting in City Cash, if you are very lucky indeed!

Cheats

There are no authorised cheats for CityVille. As the game has premium elements, there is no way that Zynga would allow people to freely break the game and generate free City Cash, as one example of what some cheats claim to do. Many require players to download software to enable the cheat – this could damage your computer and risk your Facebook account.

CityVille has its own 'achievements' system, which Zynga have elected to call Goals. Below is a list of all the current goals in CityVille, with instructions on how you should go about getting them.
