Assassin’s Creed is more then just a video game, its a brand, and as with all good brands they attempt to put their merchandise out there in as many forms as possible. What started as a simple video game that people enjoyed has now become a graphic novel series based in the universe of Assassin’s Creed featuring old and new faces alike.
Assassin’s Creed: Hawk follows Jonathan Hawk a member of the Brotherhood of Assassins. Having acquired “File 24” from Desmond Miles before the events in Assassin’s Creed 3, Hawk is on a mission to recover the missing piece of Eden number 24, The Scepter Of Aset.
Hawk will have some help investigating “File 24” from his ancestor El Cakr who lived in Cairo, Egypt in the year 1250 and was also searching for the fabled Scepter Of Aset. El Cakr who is also a member of the Brotherhood Of Assassins is tasked with finding and retrieving the Scepter after it was stolen from the Sultan, An Nasir. All El Cakr has to lead him to the thieves is one small sliver of a clue left behind during the theft.
Of course this wouldn’t be Assassin’s Creed if the Templar’s weren’t also hunting for the Scepter Of Aset which has the power to sway people’s minds. The Templars have learned of the Assassins findins regarding “File 24” and have launched their own search to recover the missing Piece Of Eden hopefully before the Assassins reach it.
Assassin’s Creed: Hawk is an interesting but rather weak story. Seeing new assassins in new locations is always great especially since it can give us an idea of what an Assassin’s Creed game could be like in a different setting with new people. After reading Assassins Creed: Hawk I realized just how great an Assassins Creed game could be in Egypt. The Nile, the Sphinx and the Pyramids are all a great setting for a story like this but if they do make it into a game I hope they put more work into the story.
The story and setting are interesting and I would love to see it played out more deeply as a game but the execution as a graphic novel is flawed. At no point while reading was I excited to see what would happen next. Maybe the game just doesn’t transfer well into a graphic novel. I genuinely feel like the story has a lot of potential as a game or even a movie but as a graphic novel its just plain boring.
