The Contra series is one of the most beloved of all time, and Contra: Hard Corps was one of its most beloved installments. Now, in 2011, Konami is back at it, releasing Hard Corps: Uprising as a 2.5D love-letter to fans of the original. Players will take the role of Bahamut, who enigmatically shares a name with the adversary in the original game, and can plan on blasting their way through a variety of explosive levels.

Despite its old-school pedigree, the game boasts many modern features, principally in Rising Mode, which adds upgradable weapons and special moves to your characters’ arsenal. Those of a more old-school sensibility can stick with Arcade Mode, which jettisons such new-fangled conveniences. No matter which variety you choose, Contra’s legendary difficulty is sure to rear its ugly head at some point or another.
