Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Trophy [Guide]

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has consistently been one of the PS3′s strongest selling points. It’s an exclusive game for the PlayStation 3 and will not likely see release on any other system this generation. The game was released before Sony made trophies mandatory, but finally, years later, Konami has released a trophy patch for the game, so players can go back through and try to “platinum” Metal Gear Solid 4!

NOTE: Even if you’ve satisfied the requirements for the trophies in the past, you will have to redo all of the trophies. Since Metal Gear Solid 4 allows save sharing, Konami didn’t want people simply downloading saves and unlocking all of the trophies that way, even though this kind of burns veteran Metal Gear Solid 4 players.

Bronze Trophies

-Crying Wolf Doll-
Description: Defeated Crying Wolf by non-lethal means, and obtained the Crying Wolf Doll
Strategy: To defeat any of the bosses in the game by non-lethal means, you basically have to use tranquilizer darts until their stamina bar is depleted and they are defeated. Employ this strategy during the boss fight with Crying Wolf.

To find the doll, check behind the wall once the battle with the boss starts.

-Divine Wind-
Description: Caused a “divine wind” using the Tanegashima
Strategy: In Drebin’s store, the Tanegashima is a special shotgun that costs 1,000,000 points. That is extremely expensive, as you could imagine, so the best time to purchase the weapon is during Act 5 when the weapon is sold at a 50% discount. When you buy the weapon, there is a 33% chance that it will cause a whirlwind that will wipe out enemies from the area and make them drop all of their items and what-not. It’s basically a free pass through the area. You can only do this in outside areas, so keep that in mind.

There is a rumor going around on the Internet that you can create a “divine wind” with the weapon in Act 1 after finding the barrel for the first time. I have yet to test this out for myself, but it’s worth a shot if you are having problems getting the weapon to work.

-Drum Can Addict-
Description: Knocked an enemy soldier flying using a Drum Can
Strategy: In the first act of the game, Snake will find a drum can that he can hide in instead of the series trademark box. While in the drum can, you can get it on the ground and roll around inside to move at a faster pace than just walking around with it. You can roll and run into enemies with the drum can, which will knock them down. Do this and the trophy will unlock.

-Emotion Control-
Description: Controlled an enemy soldier’s emotions using an Emotive Magazine
Strategy: Drebin’s store will start selling these after the second act of the game. These magazines feature the “Beasts” in the game on the cover. You put the magazine on the ground, and then the enemies will find them and look at them like they do Playboy magazines. Their emotions will then change based on the Beast that is represented on the cover of the magazine.

-Frog Soldier Doll-
Description: Escaped the Haven Troopers in the Middle East by non-lethal means, and obtained the Frog Soldier Doll
Strategy: The Frog Soldier unit will fight you in Act 1 after meeting with the Foxhound unit. These guys are the weird cyborg ninja dudes that bounce around all over the place. Basically, just beat this section of the game without killing any of them. Stun them with stun grenades and then run up behind them and use melee attacks to knock them out.

After the fight is over, check the corner of the garage to find their doll.

-Handle with Caution-
Description: Broke off the most important part of a statue
Strategy: At the very beginning of the game, you will be headed to meet Otacon. In an area called the “Red Zone”, there will be a statue that Snake can take cover on. At the front of the statue, press triangle to take cover. Then back out of cover and go back in, and keep doing this until Snake rips off the genital region of the statue! Whoops.

-Hands Up!-
Description: Held an enemy soldier at gunpoint and performed a body check
Strategy: Walk up behind an enemy and point your gun at their back. Then when they put their hands up, press triangle to start the body check. When Snake finishes checking them, this trophy will unlock.

-Hurt me more!-
Description: Shocked an enemy soldier using Mk. II/III
Strategy: At any point in the game after earning the ability to use the Mk. II, approach an enemy with it and use the machine’s shock weapon to shock them.

-Laughing Octopus Doll-
Description: Defeated Laughing Octopus by non-lethal means, and obtained the Laughing Octopus doll
Strategy: You come across the boss Laughing Octopus in Act 2 of the game. Defeat Laughing Octopus without killing her and you will unlock the trophy.

Check on top of the beds in the laboratory during the fight for the doll.

-Liquid Sun-
Description: Cleared Act 1 (Middle East)
Strategy: Beat Act 1 of the game.

-LIQUID!-
Description: Piloted Metal Gear REX and screamed at your enemy
Strategy: During the boss fight against Liquid, Snake will take control of Metal Gear REX. If you hold down the triangle button, the Metal Gear REX will roar and Snake will scream “LIQUID!” at the top of his lungs.

-Old Sun-
Description: Cleared Act 5 (Outer Haven)
Strategy: Complete the fifth act of the game.

-Overhead view — just like old times…-
Description: Used overhead view on Shadow Moses Island
Strategy: During Act 4 on Shadow Moses, you can tilt the camera to be above Snake, just like the camera was in the first Metal Gear Solid game. Keep the camera like this until Snake starts remarking about the past.

-Raging Raven Doll-
Description: Defeated Raging Raven by non-lethal means, and obtained the Raging Raven Doll
Strategy: Do as the description says.

Check the highest floor of the tower to find the doll.

-Screaming Mantis Doll-
Description: Defeated Screaming Mantis by non-lethal means, and obtained the Screaming Mantis Doll
Strategy: Yep.

Look at the lowest level of the computer room at the north corridor to find the doll.

-Solid Sun-
Description: Cleared Act 2 (South America)
Strategy: Beat Act 2 of the game.

-That Tune Is His Mind Control Music-
Description: Played Oishii Two-han Seikatsu and made one of the BB Corps dance
Strategy: The song in question is on your iPod at the start of the game. While fighting with one of the BB Corps, wait for the part of the fight with their Inner Form. Then avoid them until the screen turns completely white. Then equip the iPod and start playing the song to make them dance.

-Third Sun-
Description: Cleared Act 3 (Eastern Europe)
Strategy: Beat the third act of the game.

-Twin Suns-
Description: Cleared Act 4 (Shadow Moses)
Strategy: Beat the fourth act of the game.

-You enjoy all the killing, that’s why-
Description: Killed many enemies in one area, and vomited
Strategy: This trophy is very easy to get in the first Act. I was watching my buddy play the game only a couple of days ago and he managed to unlock it without even trying! Pick a corner in the first act and put your back to the wall. Crouch down, and start killing people. If you attract attention, enemies will constantly flood into the area looking for you. Just keep killing them and watch the bodies pile up until Snake vomits.

Silver Trophies

-Are you an Otaku too?-
Description: Viewed all model posters
Strategy: There are four different model posters in the game. Here are the locations of all the posters:

Act 2 – In the villa area, on the ground floor, there will be a painting on the wall. Shoot the painting to make it fall off the wall, and the poster will be hidden behind it.
Act 2 – On the second floor of the villa, there is a room with a bed in it. Look above the bed and you will be able to find the poster on the ceiling. Look up at it to make sure this part of the trophy is registered with the game.
Act 3 – In the south sector of Midtown, you will start to follow a guy stealthily as a part of the story. Keep following him through the city, and right after you pass the park, you will see the poster hanging on a wall in a well-lit area. It’s impossible to miss it because everywhere else is dark except the one area.
Act 3 – Once again in Midtown, go to the Central sector. Look on the bridge there to find the last poster and the trophy will unlock.

-Can you feel my power now!!!?-
Description: Took control of an enemy soldier’s body using the Mantis Doll or Sorrow Doll
Strategy: You can’t do this until Act 5 during the boss fight with Screaming Mantis. During the fight, you can shoot the two dolls out of the hands of Screaming Mantis. Then you just have to grab one of them and use them. The Mantis Doll works on dead bodies and the Sorrow Doll works on living enemies.

-Crop Circle-
Description: Found a crop circle and heard a mysterious voice
Strategy: This trophy can be unlocked during the second act of the game. Defeat the Laughing Beauty boss, and then Snake’s next objective will be to find Naomi. As you follow the objective marker on the radar, you will find a river. Follow the river to the left and eventually you find yourself in a field with a crop circle. Stand in the middle of the crop circle and listen to the voice until the trophy unlocks.

-FaceCamo Addict-
Description: Obtained 10 or more types of FaceCamo (excluding types obtained via password)
Strategy: There are 14 types of FaceCamo in the game, so you don’t need to collect them all, just 10 of them.

Standard FaceCamo – Defeat Laughing Octopus
Young Snake – Complete Act 2
Young Snake w/ Bandanna – Complete Act 2
MGS1 Snake – Complete Act 3
Laughing Beauty – Defeat Laughing Beauty in a non-lethal manner
Raging Beauty – Defeat Raging Beauty in a non-lethal manner
Crying Beauty – Defeat Crying Beauty in a non-lethal manner
Screaming Beauty – Defeat Screaming Beauty in a non-lethal manner
Roy Campbell – During the mission briefing for Act 1, take control of the Mk. II and bump into Roy to get his camo
Otacon – Bump Otacon with the Mk. II during the mission briefing for Act 3
Raiden without Vizor – Bump Naomi with the Mk. II during the briefing for Act 3
Raiden Vizor Down – Bump Sunny during the mission briefing for Act 4 with the Mk. II
Drebin – Collect at least 60 weapons from Drebin
Big Boss – Unlock the Big Boss emblem

The hardest camo to unlock will be the Big Boss camo. You have to beat the entire game on the highest difficulty setting with no deaths, no alerts, no kills, no recovery items, no stealth suit, no bandana items, and do it all in less than five hours. Good luck with that.

-Ghost Photography Addict-
Description: Snapped at least 5 shots of ghosts on Shadow Moses Island
Strategy: During mission briefings, you need to take control of the Mk. II and then use it to grab a camera off of Sunny’s desk. Keep in mind that you can only do this in Act 1 – Act 4. Then when you reach Act 4 and are on Shadow Moses Island, you need to take pictures all over the place to look for ghosts. There are a total of 30 ghosts on the island, but to get this trophy, you just need to find five of them.

If you have the Sorrow Doll, the ghosts will appear without having to take a picture of them with the camera.

-I Just Don’t Fear Death-
Description: Caused ALERT status while wearing the Corpse Camo
Strategy: You have to die 51 or more times to get the Corpse Camo throughout the course of the entire game. Once you’ve done this, you will unlock the Corpse Camo when you start a new playthrough of the game. With the Corpse Camo equipped, run in front of an enemy and alert them, which will unlock the trophy.

-SUNLIGHT!-
Description: Obtained the Solar Gun
Strategy: To get the Solar Gun, you need to collect all of the boss dolls in the game, and then keep the dolls in your inventory to the end of the game, and then start new game+ with the dolls. It is highly recommended that you obtain this gun before going for the Big Boss emblem because this weapon is one of the only special weapons that you can use during the Big Boss emblem run without having the trophy locked. Refer to the Bronze Trophies section for more information.

-Where I Can See Ya-
Description: Located enemy soldiers using the Scanning Plug
Strategy: Use the Scanning Plug gadget, basically.

-You’re pretty good-
Description: Got kissed by Ocelot during the final battle
Strategy: During the fight with Ocelot, he will put Snake in a choke. Don’t do anything and then Ocelot will eventually kiss Snake.

Gold Trophies

-Flashback Mania-
Description: Viewed all flashbacks
Strategy: This trophy is one of the worst in the game, simply because it’s easy to miss one in a cut-scene in the middle of the game, which will then force you to go all the way back to that part of the game to get it. Basically, during cut-scenes, watch for an X to appear in the upper right-hand corner of the screen, then tap the crap out of it to make sure you’ve seen all the flashback pictures available. These moments also appear in other parts of the game that aren’t necessarily just cut-scenes, so keep your eye on that corner to make sure you don’t miss any. If you have to go back through, you don’t have to get every single flashback over again.

-I am THE expert on weapons, equipment, and  cutting-edge technology-
Description: Obtained all weapons (excluding weapons obtained via password)
Strategy: This is one of the hardest trophies to unlock. In order to accomplish this, you have obtain all of the 69 weapons in the game. 68 of the weapons really aren’t that hard to unlock, and as long as you save up until Act 5, you can buy them all at a 50% discount.

The problem is the 69th weapon. The Patriot, as it is called, requires you to earn the Big Boss emblem. Ouch.

-Infinite ammo-
Description: Obtained the Bandana
Strategy: To get the bandana, you need to beat the game without killing anybody. Alternatively, you can also buy the bandana from Drebin’s store for a whopping 5,000,000 points.

-Sounds of the Battlefield-
Description: Obtained all iPod tracks (excluding tracks obtained via password)
Strategy: Another extremely difficult trophy…this trophy requires you to earn the Big Boss emblem, and find all the hidden iPod tracks in the game, which requires unlocking EVERY other emblem in the game as well. While it’s self-explanatory for the most part, if the demand is high enough, I will create a comprehensive list of each iPod track that you must find in the game. Just leave a comment if you’d this, but I feel like this trophy should get its very own exclusive guide.

-Stealth Camouflage-
Description: Obtained the Stealth Camouflage
Strategy: Like the bandana, you have to unlock this by doing something specific in the game. Going for the Big Boss emblem will net you this trophy as well as the Infinite Ammo trophy, so keep that in mind (you can’t use either of these powerful items in the game anyway). To unlock Stealth Camouflage, complete the game without alerting any enemies. You can also purchase it from Drebin for 5,000,000 points.

Platinum Trophy

-The Legendary Hero-
Description: Obtained all trophies
Strategy: Damn straight “legendary hero”.
