01. Character Creation
- – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – -
When creating a character in GTA V, you don’t get to directly create your character. Instead, there are a variety of pre-set options available to choose from that you need to go through and the game will generate a character based on those choices you’ve made.
!NOTE!
There was previously an issue with GTA Online in which a mass amount of players were having their characters deleted for no reason and without warning. The latest title update released for PS3 and Xbox 360 as of October 10th fixes this issue.
!NOTE!
=========
HERITAGE
=========
The first thing to do in the character creation process is the generation of the character. To choose how your character looks, you have to choose the grandparents of both your mom’s side and your dad’s side. Mixing and matching these people will change the look of your character.
There are 14 different grandmas and grandpas to choose from. After making your selections, you can choose if your parents most resemble their mother or their father, then choose whether or not your generated character more resembles the mother or the father.
Gender is also chosen here. By default, the game makes you a female. So be sure to scroll down and change it to male if that is the gender of character you’d like.
There is an option to have a “Special” dad character. To toggle this, go tot he Mom & Dad pictures and press Y. If you choose to have a “Special” dad, your father will be John Marston from Red Dead Redemption.
=========
LIFESTYLE
=========
When you’re done with the Heritage of your character, it’s time to move on to the Lifestyle of them. On this screen, the basic gist of it is that you are assigned 24 points to spend across a variety of different categories. The manner in which you assign the points will directly influence your base stats and the appearance of your character, though your stats can be upgraded in the actual game and your appearance changed.
These are the stats to be worried about:
Stamina
Shooting
Strength
Stealth
Flying
Driving
Lung Capacity
And these are the choices for editing your character. The maximum and minimum amount of hours you can assign to each activity is listed next to each lifestyle choice:
Asleep – Max: 12, Min: 4
With friends & family – Max: 4
Playing sports & working out – Max: 8
Doing legal work – Max 10
Sitting on the couch – Max: 8
Partying – Max: 8
Doing illegal work – Max 10
===========
APPEARANCE
===========
Finally, you do get to at least tweak some of the visual appearance of your generated character.
These are the settings you can toggle:
Age (21 to 40)
Hair
Hair Color
Beard
Hat
Glasses
After settling on these settings, it’s time to jump into the world of GTA Online. Name your character and then get to work!

02. Tutorial
- – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – -
After creating your character, Lamar (yes, that Lamar) will pick you up from the airport. A short scene will play, and after that, you will be thrust into the first race of the game. Wait for the lobby to fill up (this requires the latest patch for the game, download it immediately) and then it’s on to the first race.
================
MALL OR NOTHING
================
1-8 Players
Choose to place a bet if you wish. Then pick out your car. Choose the color, and then it’s on to the race. The race is with eight players, though one of them is a computer-controlled Lamar.
This race is pretty simple, but it does a good job of allowing you to adjust to the differences between GTA Online and the single player GTA V experience. Driving is definitely going to feel a little different as there is slight lag, most notably in this first race.
If you get way off track, then hold Y to return to the last checkpoint that you passed through.
==================
LEARNING THE ROPES
==================
Next you will be paired with one of the players that you played with in the race. Drive (or sit in the passenger seat and drive with them) to the location of the meet. Upon arriving, get out of the vehicle and kill all the drug dealers. Acquire the drugs and then deliver the drugs to the designated location.
=======
HOLD UP
=======
Afterwards, a bunch of hints will pop up in the upper left-hand corner of the screen explaining more basics behind GTA Online. These hints will then tell you to buy new clothes. A clothing store is very close by, go there, purchase new clothes, and then steal a car.
Take that car (it can’t be too good of a car) and drive it to Los Santos Customs. Park it in the garage there and repair any body damage that has been done to it (free this one time). Then re-spray it any color that you wish. Purchase insurance and a GPS tracker for the vehicle so that you know where it is at all times. This is in the Loss/Theft Prevention category while looking at car upgrades and modifications, which is newly added to the game and not available in single player. All of this is free this first time.
Now wait for a call from Lamar. He will request that you head over to a gas station/convenience store/mini mart. These appear like little Chinese restaurants on the map. You should be able to recognize them because they aren’t something that you have seen in single player.
Open the map (and hope other players don’t off you while doing this!) and then make it your designation marker. Drive there using the GPS on your map and then when you arrive, enter the store. Equip the pistol (the only weapon that you have at this point) and then point it at the guy behind the counter. If you scream into your headset, he will throw the money in the bag faster.
After you have the money, leave the store and then lose the cops. You will have a two star Wanted level. Losing the police will complete this mission. Alternatively, dying will also complete the mission.
==================
LAST TEAM STANDING
==================
Next you will be instructed to complete a Team Deathmatch. Go there now and get started. You can purchase more pistol ammo if you want, but it’s not necessary. This Team Deathmatch is fairly short as it is one death and you’re dead for the rest of it. Complete it, either winning or losing, and then you are free to roam around the world of GTA V at your leisure!

03. Races
- – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – -
A variety of different races are available in GTA Online. The game keeps track of which races you’ve already completed by putting a green checkmark next to the icon that represents each race.
==========
RACING TIPS
==========
Just some basic tips for doing races in GTA Online. Racing is largely the same when compared to how it is presented in the single-player portion of the game. However, that being said, there are some things to keep in mind with the online racing.
Online races can be altered depending on how the host wants to play. What this basically means is that there are a few different types of online races. These include regular races, GTA Races, and Rally Races.
Regular races are what they seem. They are just run of the mill races with various other settings that can be edited by the host player. For these races, the basic rules apply. There are a series of checkpoints that need to be driven through in order to continue in the race. If you get too far off course, you can simply return to the last-reached checkpoint immediately. This is useful if someone spins you out and sends you flying off a cliff or something of that nature.
GTA Races get a bit more hectic. These races basically allow players to destroy the cars of other with weapons and such. Honestly, with my many hours with GTA Online, I found that most people tend to stay away from this type of race in lieu of more traditional options.

04. Deathmatches
- – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – -
Usually free-for-all affairs, these Deathmatches have rules that can be customized by the person that is hosting each Deathmatch. Typically, they will feature a target amount of kills to reach between the two opposing sides in the game and the first team or individual to reach that goal will win.
- – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – -
05. Survivals
- – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – -
Horde-like mode in which players work together to hold off wave after wave of enemies.
To unlock Survivals, first you have to reach rank 15. Then you will receive a call from Ron. After speaking with Ron, a Survival mission will pop up at Trevor’s house in Sandy Shores. Go there to start the first Survival. After that, all the others will be available to play.
- – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – -
06. Parachuting
- – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – -
Parachuting is unlocked at Rank 11.
In Parachuting, deploy your chute fairly quickly after jumping out of the helicopter. Then fly through the checkpoints. At the end, try to land in the middle of the target as close as you possibly can.
The checkpoints have varying point values depending on where you pass through the checkpoint. Going right through the solid arrow in the middle of the checkpoint is worth 15 points. The space around the arrow is worth 10, as is the inner ring. The outer ring is only worth 5 points.
The game will constantly tell you the score value of the person in first place as well as your own score so you can keep track as you do this.
- – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – -
07. Missions
- – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – -
These missions are unlocked in a variety of ways by playing the game. They can be unlocked by receiving instructions through the phone from characters in the world, but others just appear on the map. Both missions and Last Team Standing events appear on the map as a blue star icon.
Unlike the main storyline of the game, these missions can pretty much be tackled in any order. Because of that, I am going to list the missions in alphabetical order. This is the order they will appear in your Jobs menu as well for quick access.
============
CROOKED COP
============
Rank: 3
Players: 2-16
Teams: 2
Honestly, this is one of my favorite missions in the game. In Crooked Cop, there are two teams of players. They both have the same goal of taking down a cop, designated on the map, and then killing that cop and stealing the merchandise from him. That merchandise then needs to be delivered to the client. The first team to successfully deliver the package wins.
When playing this with a full lobby of players, things can get absolutely crazy. Cop cars will be everywhere as well as the cars of the other players.
==================
CRYSTAL CLEAR OUT II
==================
Rank: 16
Players: 1-4
This mission is very simple. There are two clusters of enemies in the desert. Go to the first one and wipe them out. Then go to the second one and wipe them out. That’s really all there is to it. Obviously use your best weaponry and armor before going into this mission.
=============
HIPPY HUNTING
=============
Rank: 5
Players: 2-8
Teams: 2
In this mode, there is weed that is desired by two teams of players. The weed is possessed by a couple of hippies out in the mountains. Kill the hippies and then take the weed. The next step is to deliver the weed, so the first time to deliver the weed wins. Stick to offroad vehicles. This mission will start you with dirt bikes anyway, but just keep with them even after dying for best results.
==============
LOST IN TRANSIT
==============
Rank: 10
Players: 3-12
Teams: 3
The Lost motorcycle gang have a shipment that three different teams want. Collect the shipment and then be the first team to deliver it to the designated location.
============
PATRIOT GAINS
============
Rank: 10
Players: 3-12
Teams: 3
A group of Patriot Jeeps are driving around San Andreas. They appear as blue dots on the map. The goal is to just get one of them and deliver them. If all of the Patriots blow up or are destroyed, then the mission will end with no winner.
==========
ROADGAME
==========
Rank: 3
Players: 2-8
Teams: 2
Steal a couple of cars and deliver them. Simple stuff.
=======
TOP FUN
=======
Rank: 10
Players: 2-8
Teams: 2
One team is comprised of “runners” on dirt bikes while the other team controls jets. The goal of the jets is to destroy the runners, whereas the runners have to reach a specific location in order to complete the mission. The jet has access to machineguns and rockets. Switch between them using X and then fire them using A.
A good strategy for the runners is to actually hide in an area with numerous buildings where it will be hard for the jet to lock onto you. This can also cause the players controlling the jets to crash into the sides of buildings and mountains rather easily.
=========
TOP FUN II
=========
Rank: 15
Players: 2-8
Teams: 2
Same concept as the first Top Fun except the runners have cars. It’s best to just try to evade the jets this time instead of actively trying to hide from them like I suggested before.
=========
TRUCK OFF
=========
Rank: 16
Players: 2-8
Teams: 2
One team is in an armored truck that has a delivery to make. The other team is supposed to blow up that truck.
======================
UNDERHAND CONTRABAND
======================
Rank: 15
Players: 3-12
Teams: 3
Three teams compete to see who can deliver the titular “contraband” first. There will be plenty of enemies guarding the goods, so get rid of them while also being mindful of the enemy players. Get the stuff and then do your best to get the hell out of there and deliver it successfully.
================
WELCOMING PARTY
================
Rank: 3
Players: 2-8
Teams: 2
In this mission, there is once again two teams that are opposed to one another. One team will be protecting a VIP and ensuring that he is delivered to his destination safely. The other team is focused on killing off the VIP.

08. Last Team Standing
- – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – -
Last Team Standing is a mode in which every person on the team has a single life. The goal is to eliminate all the players on the opposite team. At times, these Last Team Standing missions are integrated into the regular “Missions” especially early on in the game.
Last Team Standing is virtually the same as the Deathmatches, except that the stakes are much higher because you only have one life.
