Call of Duty is almost all about the multiplayer component. It is one of the
most popular multiplayer modes of all time, if not THE most popular, helping
propel Call of Duty into a pop culture phenomenon. The series’ trademark
multiplayer returns for Ghosts, and this is the comprehensive guide you need to
master it.

1. Game Modes
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
The multiplayer in Call of Duty: Ghosts contains a variety of different game
modes. The following is a list of the game modes and an explanation on how you
play each mode.
The best way to test out the game modes and practice without going online is
to play locally and use bots. You can also play in split-screen with up to
one other real person for practice.
_____________
STANDARD
_____________
The basic Call of Duty experience can be found here. For the most part, the
most players will be playing the game modes that fall under the “Standard”
category than you will find playing in the other available modes.
To Top
===============
TEAM DEATHMATCH
===============
PLAYERS: 8-12
Team Deathmatch is probably the most popular mode in Call of Duty. Players are
separated into two teams. The goals of Team Deathmatch are the same as Free for
All: have the highest score when the time runs out or reach the maximum amount
of kills possible to end the match.
Team Deathmatch will often be like Free for All; people will be running around
and not really strategizing and working together. It doesn’t require a lot of
strategy and Team Deathmatch in Call of Duty is pretty much a lone wolf affair
anyway and always has been.
That being said, a team that has mics and are able to communicate with each
other are likely to do much better. The way you want to play TDM depends
entirely on how you like to play the game, whereas with Free for All I would
recommend sticking with a class that is geared more toward speed than anything
else.
=======
CRANKED
=======
PLAYERS: 8-12
If you are familiar with the Jason Statham film Crank, then you kind of know
what to expect in this new game mode. Basically, after getting your first kill,
you have 30 seconds to get another kill or else you will blow up.
When you are in that 30 second window, you are in a state called “Cranked”.
With every kill you will gain new perks that are all based around making you
a faster play, such as Slight of Hand. You also score more points when you are
“Cranked”, so that is the incentive to avoid blowing up.
=====
BLITZ
=====
PLAYERS: 8-12
Each team has a zone that they have to protect. The goal is to get into the
opposing team’s zone. Doing this will earn your team a point. The best strategy
here is to obviously have some players stick behind at your own zone to
protect it from enemies and have everyone else try to score on the opposing
team by getting into their zone.
=================
SEARCH AND RESCUE
=================
PLAYERS: 8-12
A new spin on the classic Search and Destroy game type. This mode combines
Search and Destroy with Kill Confirmed. The objectives from Search and Destroy
remain the same. One team attempts to blow up an objective, while the other
team has to prevent them from doing so.
The difference in Search and Rescue is that it gives players a chance to
respawn, whereas Search and Destroy only gives you one life per round. When a
player dies, they drop dogtags just like in Kill Confirmed. If those dogtags
are picked up by enemy players, then the dead player can’t respawn until the
next round. If an ally picks up the dogtags, then the dead player will respawn
and will be able to continue playing in that round.
==================
SEARCH AND DESTROY
==================
PLAYERS: 8-12
Search and Destroy is another very popular mode in Call of Duty that returns
for Ghosts. One team tries to destroy an objective and the other team has to
defend that objective. There is no respawning.
========
INFECTED
========
PLAYERS: 12-18
Infected has two vastly different experiences available depending on which
team you are playing on. One team is known as the Survivors and the other
team is known as the Infected.
At the start of each game of Infected, one player is chosen at random to be
Infected, while all the other players are Survivors. The only way to win the
game as Infected is to infect all the Survivors by killing them. Killing a
Survivor will turn them into an Infected, though the Infected will respawn
infinitely throughout the match.
The only way to win the match as a Survivor is to keep killing the Infected
until the time runs out or effectively hiding from them. Since the Infected
and Survivors play very differently, you’re going to want to play one of two
ways as either team.
Strength in numbers is a key part of both teams. With the Survivors, you will
want to stay together and try to get your backs to a wall. This will allow you
to defend yourselves from the Infected and force them all to attack from one
direction.
Infected are able to get to the Survivors easier if they are able to swarm them
with multiple Infected. The Survivors are equipped with a shotgun that is only
worth anything in extremely close-ranges, so you’ll want to the Infected to get
at least a little close and then shoot them.
The Infected have a little more tools up their sleeves. For one, they are
equipped with a knife that makes knifing a lot easier. Secondly, they have
throwing knives for ranged attacks. Getting good with throwing knives is key
to success in Infected.
Finally, Infected have tactical insertion. Tactical insertion is used by
holding LB. Release LB when it is loaded and then wherever you let go will be
where the tactical insertion is placed. Tactical insertion allows you to
respawn wherever you drop it instead of spawning at one of the designated
spawn points on the map.
==============
KILL CONFIRMED
==============
PLAYERS: 8-12
Kill Confirmed is basically just Team Deatmatch, except there is an added
stipulation that makes it less likely that people will be camping. It makes
Team Deathmatch feel a little bit more like Free for All, because people tend
to run around a lot more in Kill Confirmed.
Kill Confirmed has the same rules as Team Deathmatch, except when players die,
they drop dogtags. No score is gained until that dogtag is collected. If
someone on the same team as the player that died gets the dogtag, then they
negate that kill for the opposing team.
==========
DOMINATION
==========
PLAYERS: 8-12
There are three different flags on the map, A, B, and C. What usually happens
is that there is a flag near the spawn point of either group, and then a
flag in the middle area of the map. Most of the game will be able trying to
gain and then successfully defend the flag that is in the middle of the map.
Points are earned for every couple of seconds that you have a flag. The more
flags that you have captured, the more points you will earn. The game ends
with one team reaches the designated point value.
======
HUNTED
======
PLAYERS: 8-12
In this match type, players start the game with only a pistol that has very
limited ammo (about a clip’s worth) and a couple of throwing knives. The other
weapons are dropped in weapon crates throughout the map. These crates can be
accessed multiple times until they run out. They yield a random weapon to
give you an edge over your opponents. This game type is team-based.
============
FREE FOR ALL
============
PLAYERS: 4-8
Free for All is not available when playing split-screen online.
The goal in Free for All is simple. Be the person to kill the most enemy
players by the time runs out or kill the maximum amount of enemies required to
win the game. Free for All also rewards players that get in second and third
place.
Free for All is typically a faster game type, with people using less strategy
and more or less just running around the maps and shooting at each other.
=============
TEAM TACTICAL
=============
PLAYERS: 6-8
This game mode has a variety of the objective based match types listed above
(such as Search and Destroy or Domination as opposed to the “just kill a lot
of things” matches) with smaller teams. This is ideal for those playing
together in a party that want to have competition against other players that
are likely playing in a party as well.
==========
GROUND WAR
==========
PLAYERS: 12-18
A lot of people feel that the maps in Call of Duty: Ghosts are too big. Well,
here’s your answer. Ground War makes the team sizes larger. The game types
switch between Team Deathmatch and Domination. As you vote on maps, you will
see what match type it will be as well if that map wins the vote going into
the game.
==============
GHOSTS MOSHPIT
==============
PLAYERS: 8-12
For now, this mode is exclusive to those that pre-ordered Call of Duty: Ghosts.
It lets you play on the DLC map Free Fall. The different game types will rotate
and all of the game types are eligible here.

_____________
HARDCORE
_____________
Hardcore is for the players that want a more difficult experience than can be
found in the Standard game modes. The main tropes of Hardcore are that there
is a very limited HUD, everything kills easier, and if you try to kill your
own teammates, you will die instead.
All Hardcore game types are played with 8-12 players. There are four different
game types available for Hardcore, which are as follows:
Team Deathmatch
Kill Confirmed
Search and Rescue
Domination
The rules for the game types are the same, except they have the added Hardcore
stipulations to make them more challenging. For more information on those
modes, simply check out their descriptions and strategies as listed above in
the “Standard” section of this guide.

_____________
CLAN VS CLAN
_____________
Clan multiplayer is available in Call of Duty: Ghosts. If you want to take
full advantage of clans, you’re going to want to stick to the Xbox 360, PS3,
and PC versions of the game.
In my experience, the next-gen versions on Xbox One, PS4, and Wii U do not
have enough people actively playing the clan game type to really make it
worth bothering with.
The rules for this is obviously you have to be in a clan. Only 8 players can
play a Clan vs Clan game at any time, with the teams split up into 4 vs. 4
Two different game types are available:
Team Deathmatch
Objectives
Objectives is just a bunch of game types like Domination and Search and
Destroy that the game will cycle through as you vote on the maps.

Call of Duty: Ghosts comes packed in with a multitude of maps that can be
used across Squads and the multiplayer. Some of the maps are geared toward
specific game types, but they can be used in any of the game modes available.
The maps are listed here in alphabetical order. The recommend game type for
each map is listed next to it.

3. Create A Soldier
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
For Call of Duty: Ghosts, the way that you create your classes has been
changed significantly. Players now create and customize their own soldier. Up
to 10 soldiers can be saved at a time, each with their own five loadouts, and
all of them can level up and prestige once.
_____________
CUSTOMIZATION
_____________
Soldiers can have their loadouts customized in a number of different ways.
New guns can be purchased using Squad Points that are earned simply by
playing the game.
Weapons can have up to four attachments equipped (depending on various factors)
and there’s also a variety of skins that can be applied to weapons. Different
pointstreak packages can be equipped as well. Players can have lethal
throwing weapons, tactical throwing weapons, secondary weapons with their own
attachments and skin options, and up to four perks equipped. If you want to
have five perks instead, simply making the Combat Knife your primary weapon.
===============
PRIMARY WEAPONS
===============
Primary weapons are your bread and butter in Call of Duty: Ghosts. These are
the weapons that you will be using most of the time, so it is best to master
them before worrying about the secondary weapons and mastering other aspects
of the multiplayer.
The following is a list of all the primary weapons in the game, along with
their base stats, as I’ve interpreted them from their graphs. You can check
out the stats for yourselves, and if you look at different weapons the bars
will compare the weapons that you’re looking at to your current one equipped.
You can check your performance with these weapons using the bumpers when
looking at the stat page.

SECONDARY WEAPONS
=================
Secondary weapons are the weapons that you can switch to at the start of the
match and have. They are typically a last resort weapon or used for very
specific, special situations. For example, you would want to use a launcher
to shoot down enemy aircraft and you want to use a pistol whenever you have no
ammo for your primary weapon because it is faster to switch to your secondary
than to reload.
The following is a list of the secondary weapons in the game and their base
stats. You can choose to go into matches with NO secondary weapon, which will
in turn allow you to have more room for perks, attachments for your primary
weapon, etc. You have 10 points to spend, basically, so the secondary weapon
is completely optional.

======
LETHAL
======
By default, these weapons are assigned to the right bumper. They are used to
kill your opponents. You do not have to have anything in your “lethal” slot and
can instead choose to simply have nothing assigned to it.
These items do not have base stats. However, this is the list of lethal items
that you can have in the game:
Frag Grenade
Semtex
Throwing Knife
I.E.D.
C4
Canister Bomb
========
TACTICAL
========
Whereas lethal weapons are used almost exclusively for killing your enemies,
the weapons in the tactical slot are more used to disorient the enemy or
give you some other advantage. These items are assigned to the left bumper on
your controller.
Like lethal weapons, these weapons do not have base stats to list. These are
the tactical weapons that are featured in the game:
9-Bang
Concussion
Smoke
Trophy System
Motion Sensor
Termobaric
=====
PERKS
=====
In Call of Duty: Ghosts, Perks can be equipped to your multiplayer characters
to give them an advantage in the game. Different perks can be mixed and
matched. The perks all have their own value, so you can’t go over that value.
You can have a total of 8 perks equipped, 10 if you choose not to lose some
of your loadout weapons.
The following includes the categories that perks fall under and the different
perks that fall under those categories. The perks are listed in the order that
they can be used and equipped.

POINTSTREAKS
============
Pointstreaks are abilities gained in the matches by earning points. These
streaks come in three different packages, all with their own requirements in
order for you to earn the Pointstreak rewards.
Pointstreaks, like perks, have a bunch of different options that are each
assigned a numerical value. You can’t have two of these rewards equipped that
are of the same value. You have to start with the lowest value to the highest
value, and three different rewards can be chosen at a time.
Here’s the requirements for each Strike Package:
—>ASSAULT<—
SAT Com
IMS
Guard Dog
Sentry Gun
Trinity Rocket
Battle Hind
Vulture
Gryphon
Maniac
Juggernaut
Helo Pilot
Loki
With the Assault Strike Package pointstreak equipped, your goal is to kill X
amount of enemies in a row without dying. Your streak will restart to 0 after
you die.
—>SUPPORT<–
SAT Com
Ammo Crate
Ballistic Vests
MAAWS
Night Owl
Support Squadmate
Ground Jammer
Air Superiority
Helo Scout
Oracle
Juggernaut Recon
Odin
These Strike Packages deal with helping out your teammates. Because they are
less lethal than the Assault Packages, these do not reset upon death.
—>SPECIALIST<—
Instead of choosing a special ability like calling in an airstrike or
requesting a care package, this Strike Package actually lets you pick an extra
perk that will be automatically equipped after you complete the requirements
to obtain them. Dying will reset the streak and also get rid of the extra
perk.

BARRACKS
_____________
Barracks is your base of operations in regards to managing various aspects of
the Call of Duty: Ghosts multiplayer experience. It is also from here that
you can check the worldwide as well as friends leaderboards.
Before you are able to do Clan vs Clan, you’re going to need to create a
clan. This is done in the Barracks. You can create and customize your clan,
plus manage your clan away from the TV using the Call of Duty: Ghosts app for
that second screen experience.
In addition to all of that, you are able to manage your COD Account. Your COD
Account is what lets you transfer your content from, for example, the Xbox 360
to the Xbox One as well as access other content.
