1. Introduction and Controls
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
As a participant in Kinect Sports: Rivals, you must first create your
“Champion”, the character that you play as. This is accomplished by having
the Kinect scan you. Complete the scanning process and the game will recreate
you in digital form!
Afterwards, it’s off to the races…literally, at the beginning. Your goal is
to mingle with the three major factions of the island: Eagle Legion, Wolf Clan,
and Viper Network. By doing this, you will unlock more events that you can
play online, offline, for fun, for credits, and more.
The controls for each event varies, but they are all motion control based.
Because of this, you will find more specific control information for each
event in their actual section of the guide, under the “Training” sub section.
===================
NAVIGATING THE MENU
===================
I usually wouldn’t have a section of a guide dedicated to menu navigation, but
menu navigation in Kinect Sports: Rivals can be a little confusing, so here we
go, in the traditional FAQ format!
Q: What can I use to navigate the menu in Kinect Sports: Rivals?
A: There are three options to navigating the menus in the game. You can use
the Xbox One controller (my recommended method), motion controls, or voice
controls. The controller is always the fastest and easiest option.
Q: Why don’t all of the sports appear on the island?
A: The sports won’t appear on the island until after you’ve completed the
training for each sport. Just keep doing the “Training” and then the “Team
Story” events. You can find them at the specific sport icon or by going to
the “Top Picks” section on the island as well.
Q: How do I start playing a sport?
A: To start an event, first scroll to the event. Make sure the large icon in
the middle is selected, and then start moving to the left or right to scroll
through all the available events. Upon reaching the event you want to play,
move “up” from the icon to the different options that are at the top of the
screen. Then press A and play!

2. Wake Racing
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
Wake Racing is a racing event in which you and your opponents ride on Jet Skis.
========
TRAINING
========
The Wake Racing training is the first training that you will go through in the
game. It is actually very helpful, as it teaches you some of the most important
basics of the event.
The first lesson is simply teaching you how to maneuver the vehicle. In order
to gauge how good you are at this, you are supposed to complete a lap around
the track. To help know where you’re going, pay attention to the blue arrows
on the side of the track as well as the green checkpoints, which indicate where
you need to go next.
To control the vehicle, hold both arms out in front of you. To accelerate,
close your right hand. Stop accelerating by opening your right hand. To steer,
pull your arm back. For example, if you want to steer to the left, pull your
left arm back. If you want to steer to the right, pull your right arm back.
Keep the other arm in the correct position.
The second lesson is in regards to special abilities. For this lesson, you
are given a boost ability. To activate an ability, say “Power up!” or lift your
right foot and stomp it on the ground. These powers need to be refilled by
completing stunts and the like, and you can gauge how much of it you have by
checking it in the upper left hand corner of the screen.
To perform a back-flip, lean back at the top of a ramp or a big wave.
Straighten out your body before a landing to do it perfectly. To perform a
front flip, lean forward. These tricks will help raise your power up ability.
In addition, you can also gain power-up abilities by playing “chicken” with the
mines that are dotted around the course. Get as close to the mines as possible,
but get out of the way before you run into them or are hit by the explosion
that follows to also get points to fill your power up.
To unlock more Wake Racing events, you must get third place or better in your
first race to impress Eagle Legion.

3. Rock Climbing
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
Often shortened to “Climbing” in the game, Rock Climbing involves you racing
against other opponents to climb to the top of a tower or mountain.
========
TRAINING
========
Climbing is a lot less complicated than Wake Racing. Lift one hand up with an
open palm and then close your fist on the ridge to grab onto it. Then bring
that hand all the way down to your waist (do not release your first), while
simultaneously bringing up your opposite arm to grab onto the next ridge.
If you need to move sideways, it’s pretty self-explanatory. Just grab a ridge
and move your arm to your chest without releasing. This way you can move your
character along the climbing wall in a sideways fashion.
If there comes the need to jump, literally just jump in the air. Then close
both fists on the next ridges so that you don’t end up falling down the wall.
Speaking of falling down the wall, this can happen if your opponent grabs on
your ankle and yanks you down. To escape this, start climbing faster to break
away from their grip. It is also possible to yank enemies off the wall
yourself. Just grab the ridge that their foot is on and make a yanking motion
with your arm.
There is also a stamina meter to keep track of. If you go TOO fast, you will
lose stamina and fall off the wall. The stamina meter will pop up whenever it
is being exerted throughout the competition. When it’s green, that means you’re
fine, but when the green bars start to deplete, that means you might want to
stop and rest.
Wolf Clan is the group that you have to impress to unlock the rest of the
Rock Climbing events. You HAVE to come in first in this event, but that is
actually pretty easy to accomplish and there is a lot of room for error, so
don’t stress about it.

4. Target Shooting
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
Involving futuristic devices, Target Shooting in Kinect Sports: Rivals is a
bit more intense than one might expect…
========
TRAINING
========
Shooting is simple enough. Reach out and grab your gun with whatever hand you
want to use. Make a “gun” shape with your hand, and then move the cursor
around the screen. There are various targets to hit, and on the opposite
side, you will have an opponent competing with you and shooting targets as
well.
Bronze targets are worth the least amount of points. Silver targets are worth
a little more, and gold targets are worth the most. There are special targets
that switch things up. Some targets have numbers on them, indicating an order
that you need to shoot the targets. Other targets have shields on them that
have to be broken first. And then there are targets that slide up and down
the field, giving your opponent a chance to shoot YOUR targets and take
potential points away from you.
To shoot, simply hover the cursor over the target. The actual shooting is
done automatically. The red targets are to be avoided completely as they will
actually take AWAY from your score.
At the end of the round, you have to activate your turret. Point the cursor
at the turret in front of you to activate it. Then your opponent will have to
dodge the turret blasts. Any hits will take points away from your opponent and
give them to you.
Of course, your opponent will also get the chance to activate his turret and
use it against you. To avoid the turret blasts, lean your body to the left or
right.
Defeat your opponent in a match of “Crack Shot”, which consists of three
rounds of Target Shooting. Whenever you see the turret start blinking, you
can activate it, so in the actual games, you don’t have to wait until the end
of the match to activate the turrets. Get first to impress Viper Network.

5. Soccer
To Top
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
Soccer of the future is played by one person that can teleport up and down
the field and play every position. Just a head’s up for anyone that’s
interested in pursuing the sport professionally.
========
TRAINING
========
Soccer is one of the most difficult sports out of all of the sports in the
game. Most of the time, you will be playing the part of the goalie. As the
goalie, time will slow down when the ball is coming to you, giving you time to
position yourself in front of the ball to make the save. Where the ball is
going to come will be outlined by a circle.
If the circle has a fist in the center, you can punch the ball. If successful,
this will cause a “Super Save”, which sends the ball flying all the way across
the field where you can go for a goal.
When passing, your goal will be to kick the ball with the side of your foot
to make it go left or right, and then straight on to make it go straight
down the field. Avoid the defenders, which are red, as they will block your
ball and make it automatically the other team’s ball.
Some of your teammates will have their feet glowing. Passing to these teammates
in succession will build up your “charge”, allowing you to make a super shot
when you get the ball again.
When going for a shot, you will want to time your attempt for when the circle
encloses itself on the symbol of the ball. The ball will either be by your
left foot, right foot, or head. If it is by your head, then you need to swing
your head or jump up to make an attempt at the goal.
You are timed when doing this in an actual game. Your opponent in your first
soccer game will have his special ability to drain the time away from your
time passing and shooting, so keep an eye on the timer.
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
6. Bowling
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
The sport of bowling basically made this entre genre of games possible. Bowling
in Wii Sports is what made that game so popular, and it is impossible to deny
that the success and popularity of Wii Sports had a direct effect on the
conception and development of Kinect Sports.
========
TRAINING
========
To pick up a bowling ball, hold your hand to your side and then close your
first. The game will then switch to a first-person view. The arrows will
light up to indicate where your bowler is positioned. At that point, just
bowl.
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
7. Tennis
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
Tennis is another sport that has been extremely popular to recreate in games
like this. Tennis plays like one would expect, though the use of Kinect does
make it somewhat different than if you were playing with a motion controller.
========
TRAINING
========
Choose which hand you want to use for the racket by reaching out to either
your left or your right and then closing that fist. Whichever hand doesn’t
have the racket will have the tennis ball. Throw the ball in the air and then
swing ABOVE your head to perform a serve. The closer the white ball ball is to
the actual tennis ball, the better the serve.
Your opponent will then hit the ball back. Watch the tennis ball icon to see
where it’s going to be. Then when it is full, swing the racket as hard as you
can for the best shot possible. And that’s all there is to playing tennis in
Kinect Sports: Rivals.
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
8. Team Story
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
To unlock new events and go through the “story” on the island, you have to
complete the “Team Story”. The “Team Story” are events where you team with the
various teams on the island and work with them to help undermine the other
groups.
There are three groups:
Eagle Legion
Wolf Clan
Viper Network
After the training for each of the events, you will have basically a practice
run that introduces you to each event one after another. These are all
considered a part of the “Team Story”. For more information on them, check out
the “Training” section of each sport.
Here is the order that you do this:
Wake Racing (Eagle Legion)
Rock Climbing (Wolf Clan)
Target Shooting (Viper Network)
Soccer (Eagle Legion)
Bowling (Wolf Clan)
Tennis (Viper Network)
These are the rest of the events:
========================
WAKE RACING (EAGLE LEGION)
========================
Goal: Place 3rd or higher with Carmen
Strategy: You only have to get in third place or better for this particular
event. You don’t have to worry about Carmen falling behind or anything like
that; she will either get 2nd or 1st depending on how well you do in the
event.
==================
SOCCER (WOLF CLAN)
==================
Goal: Place 1st
Strategy: Just a regular soccer game. No gimmicks here.
=============================
ROCK CLIMBING (VIPER NETWORK)
=============================
Goal: Place 1st
Strategy: This Rock Climbing event will be much different than the first one
you did. The tower itself is a lot more challenging, requiring more jumps and
more side-climbing. Because of this, your stamina gauge will likely come into
play, so keep a close eye on it.
Near the top, you will get to a set of ridges that are electrified. In order
to bypass them, you have to jump. If needed, utilize a Super Jump if you have
one equipped. Just above that will be the finish line.
==============================
TARGET SHOOTING (EAGLE LEGION)
==============================
Goal: Place 1st
Strategy: Shooting. The first round is just typical targets that do not move.
The second round will have the targets displayed so that they form shapes.
Finally, the third round will have targets swinging from one end to the
other like a pendulum.
As always with target shooting, it’s smart to go after your opponents’ points
whenever possible. Their points can be stolen whenever their targets are above
the field.
==================
TENNIS (WOLF CLAN)
==================
Goal: Place 1st
Strategy: The Wolf Clan leader’s daughter will put up quite the battle, but
otherwise this is a pretty routine game of tennis. Utilize your special
abilities whenever you feel it is necessary.
=======================
BOWLING (VIPER NETWORK)
=======================
Goal: Place 1st
Strategy: Your opponents in this Bowling event are pretty terrible. That
being said, there are indeed two of them instead of just one this time, so
there is an extra challenge there. Just get the ball straight down the lane and
as long as you at least knock over a few each frame, you should be golden.
Don’t expect the AI to get any spares or strikes, so if you manage to get one
of those in a frame, you’re almost guaranteed victory.
At this point, Coach will call you back so that you can compete in more
events…but this time it isn’t under the allegiance of any of the other
teams on the island. Instead you are proving your worth against the other
rookies that have managed to get this far as well. It’s almost time to make
your choice!
===================
WAKE RACING (COACH)
===================
Goal: Place 1st
Strategy: This race is a lot harder than the other one that you were a part of
during the training phase. You will probably want to upgrade your ski, which
may require some grinding for funds and XP so that you are high enough level
to purchase a new one.
It is PARAMOUNT to hit all the ramps possible, and to flip off the ramps as
well. These tricks will get you a speed boost as well as fill up your special
ability meter. If you get too far behind 1st, you will probably lose, but don’t
worry–you will still gain coins and XP for completing the event, so trying
this over and over can actually count as grinding.
Upon getting 1st in the previous Wake Racing event (just getting third won’t
cut it this time), you then have to choose which team you’d like to join.
Again, your choices are as follows (listed in the order that they will appear
at the top of your screen:
Viper Network
Wolf Clan
Eagle Legion
The difference between each group is that you will get new equipment and
clothing that is branded after their group. So just go with whatever group has
the threads that appeal to you the most.

9. Rivals League
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
This mode will actually take you to the Kinect Sports Hub. This app that is
downloaded separately stores all the leaderboard and other online information
that is used int he game.
You can check your standings in the game when compared to your friends and
other people around the world, as well as check out the latest new stories
involving Kinect Sports: Rivals.
If you’re looking for new information on possible Kinect Sports: Rivals DLC or
other announcements from rare, then the Kinect Sports Hub is probably the
first place that you’re going to find it.
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
10. My Game
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
The “My Game” section of Kinect Sports: Rivals has a couple of different
options available to you.
There is the “Options” portion. Go here if you want to edit various aspects of
the game, redo the training tutorials, or get general tips from the game
itself.
The other option here is to check your Friends List; if anyone on your list is
currently online and playing Kinect Sports: Rivals, they will appear here. Any
“rivals” you have accrued by playing the game will also appear in this
area.
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
11. My Champion
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
“My Champion” mode in Kinect Sports: Rivals features four different options
for you to explore.
The first one is the “Locker”. This is where you can edit what equipment your
champion is going to take into each event. You can also choose the outfit that
they’re going to wear for each event here as well.
The Gallery is where you can see photos of your champion.
Customize is where you can edit the appearance of your Champion. You will have
a variety of options available here, and everything here doesn’t have to be
purchased with the in-game currency.
Finally, you can “Create Champion”. You do this at the very beginning of the
game before doing anything else. However, if you want to redo this process for
whatever reason (there is an achievement for scanning yourself as the opposite
sex that you did originally), then this is where you want to go. You can also
create other champions for you to play as if you want.
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
12. Store
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
By playing events, players earn both coins and XP. The coins can be spent at
the store, while the store is also where the new gear that is unlocked from
earning levels is unlocked.
The costumes are the same across all of the different events, though they look
slightly different based on what event it is. The gear is exclusive to the
specific event. The gear is represented by the bottom row in the store. At
level 3, you will unlock your first piece of new gear. Afterwards, you will
earn new gear for every subsequent level thereafter.
In parantheses next to the gear, you will see which power up you will get
with that particular piece of gear as well. You can equip different gear
before starting each event.
