It’s a pretty scary game that keeps its players on their toes by having a predatory enemy with cunning AI go after them all over the space station Sevastopol without any definite way to kill or distract it. If you want to stay alive in this dark and metallic space hell, then you’ll need to stand by some principles that will help you get past the big bad Alien.

These are some of the tactics that you can employ whenever you’re in a pinch, with the Alien getting really close to getting you. While unable to kill it, Amanda isn’t exactly helpless as there are a few things that she can do in order to survive in the Sevastopol.

Silence

This is perhaps the golden rule of Alien: Isolation. Maybe you’ve been lax with your noise discipline in other stealth games, but you can’t slack off this time and rush to your next objective. The Alien here is smart and can hear noisy prey from a mile away, so you better start quieting down and watch your every step.

If you don’t keep yourself quiet, then it can drop in all of a sudden and you’d be wishing that you had been more sneaky.

Distraction

Whether the Alien is coming closer or is blocking the way you want to go, you may want it to go to a different location in the vicinity. That’s when you take out a Noisemaker or EMP Mine and throw it towards the direction where you want it to go. As it makes its way towards the distraction, make a mad dash for escape.

Make sure that you are to NEVER cross its path while you’re running away; always go the opposite way. If ever you are on a straight path from the Alien, it can just dart straight towards you; you’ll never be able to outrun it with straight speed.

There are times when you’ll find gas canisters, which can be shot to blow them up. That can help create a distraction that will make the Alien move towards it.

Hide and Don’t Move

The act of hiding to survive in this game is obvious enough, but also take note that the Alien can detect motion as well. In lower difficulties, it can be more forgiving with it being able to detect you. However, it’ll be able to even see your slightest movement at higher difficulties, so make sure to not move while hiding until it goes away.

Knowing where to hide is just as important, especially in a place such as the Sevastopol where there are plenty of those places to temporarily disappear. But take note that just because you’re safe now under a desk or in some hole that it’ll be safe forever because it won’t. You’d want to keep moving once the coast is clear because staying put makes you a sitting duck.

Motion Detector

Even the most casual of Alien fans would know how important and indispensable of a tool the motion detector is. Being able to know where the Alien is lets you know when to run and where to run off to and hide. Take cover quickly whenever you see it coming close, whether under a table, hiding in a locker, or so on.

Always look out for the motion detector going below .60 as it means trouble. Once hidden, stay there until you get a reading of .90 or higher (it should be that high; better same than sorry). But also remember that the motion detector is not the most reliable tool at all times; it can lead you astray sometimes. It’s just a guide and not an ultimate guide, so still keep your eyes peeled.

Meat Shields

This is a downright nasty one, not to mention really heartless. However, most lives on board are pretty much forfeit with an Alien present, so you might as well throw away all notion of morals and embrace Darwinism by surviving through the “better him than me” mindset. (If you can’t fully accept that, just remind yourself that this really is just a game.)

Once an Alien takes down a victim, it’ll take some time to consume its prey, which should be enough for you to get away. In this instance though, don’t run since it’ll just pounce at you. Think of it you being another course, and it can just eat its previous catch later after it catches you.

Hurt the Alien

You do have weapons in the game, but you can’t kill the Alien because it’s just that awesome of a space gore machine. You can still stun it though to buy you some time to escape. Your main tools for this are the Molotov Cocktail and the EMP Mine, both of which can be thrown directly at the Alien to hurt it, and then leg it towards your escape route.

Burn the Alien

The aforementioned Molotov Cocktail brings another point in how to get the Alien off your case for the time being, which is that it hates fire. It may be fireproof, but it’s not entirely impervious to pain, so you can get it to stop in its tracks if you find yourself a Flamethrower or anything in the environment that spews fire.

The Flamethrower is perhaps the best weapon in the game, and it can really make you feel brave after having to cower like a boy trying to keep school bullies from stealing his lunch money for the third time in a week. When the Alien appears in front of you and you have it on hand, you’ll be less likely to pee your panties.

Multiple Paths

The Sevastopol is full of doors and openings that lead to different parts of the station, so you have choices when it comes to escape routes. Not only does this make the level design of the game less linear and boring, but it helps with your survival as less paths equal to less ways to escape.

It also means that wherever the Alien may be, there could be an exit at the opposite end, so you can throw out a distraction and dash for safety at the other side. If it so happens that there are no escape routes away from the Alien, then either you hope that it goes away or you’ll be dead soon.

Save Often

This is a really scary game, like a sci-fi version of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. If you don’t want to have to redo a particularly difficult sequence, then you should save whenever you can. At least this game lets you save your progress, otherwise the experience would be extra unpleasant.
