Microsoft is set to witness the launch of one of their biggest releases in a long time, the Windows 10 operating system that caters to both touch friendly devices and desktops at the same time.
A lot of rumors have been circulating with regards to this upcoming OS. One of them claims that Microsoft will stop making Windows from here on. This is going to be the last ever software to come out of the company after which they will continue to update it with software rollouts at least for the next ten years or so. Such a drastic change might be introduced because a lot of people complain whenever an entirely new operating system comes out and they are forced to pay for it. By rolling out free updates to introduce the features, the company aims to satisfy them all and also save costs on big launches.
Subscription Model
Adobe recently adopted this subscription model which allowed the company to stop releasing standalone versions of photoshop, premiere pro among many others. They have created a new business model where the users don’t pay a one-time price. Instead, they have to pay $20 or more based on the products they have subscribed to. The subscribers will have complete access to the program on the computer for which it has been authorized and will receive all future updates. In other words, it helps them make more money, spend less on product launches and focus strongly on creating a better software.
Microsoft is trying to follow a similar pattern which may work or completely backlash because this is a complete operating system that we are talking about. If Windows XP and Vista were never ditched, there could hardly be a futuristic Windows 10 that everyone has been asking for. Releasing major features as a software upgrade is really tough. While the company didn’t comment on it, they have confirmed that there will be no option to turn off updates.
Every Update is Compulsory
Making every Windows 10 update compulsory is a good thing from one perspective. All the software and security systems will be up to date. But, in another view, it could lead to unexpected bugs that may cause serious issues when you are busy working. For pirates, this is bad news because pirated copies are not designed to be updated regularly which might make the keygen tools void. Microsoft might curb piracy, but also make a lot of genuine users unhappy with this rule.
