This time we're going to show you where to find all eight of the companions that you can recruit in Pillars of Eternity.
Pillars of Eternity is a massive game, and there are dozens of different ways to get lost within the world. But, if you’re looking to make it very far in the game, you’re going to need a party that is strong enough, and brave enough to challenge the darkest of evil powers. While you can purchase hirelings for your party from Inns, some of the best party members you can find are the seven scripted companions that Obsidian has hidden throughout the world of Dyrwood. They don’t cost anything to hire on, and they even come with interesting dialogue and quests of their own. If you want to get the most out of Pillars of Eternity, we highly suggesting picking up this fantastic characters, and to help convince you, we’ve scavenged the lands of Dyrwood to bring you this ultimate guide to picking up every companion.
The first companion you have a chance to pick up is Aloth, a high DPS wizard which can be found when you first enter Gilded Vale. To recruit Aloth you’ll need to head over to the Black Hound Inn in Gilded Vale and defuse the erupting situation outside of the Inn. You can either talk the villagers out of fighting, or fight and only attack Aloth’s enemies. No matter which direction you take, you’ll be given a chance to speak with Aloth, at which point he will mention tagging along with you. Accept his offer and he’ll be added to your party.
The second companion of the game is also hanging around inside Gilded Vale. To find him you’ll need to sleep at the Inn after being told to leave town, and then after your dream, go speak with the dead dwarf animancer hanging from the tree. After you’ve finished with her, head back out of the crumbling ruins and speak with the man standing just beyond the tree. This is Eder, a fighter who is close to ending up on the hanging tree. Mention Caed Nua to bring up his offer to tag along and then accept his request.
Durance is a bit of a different kind of companion. He’s a companion, nonetheless, but he’s one of the weirder of the group that you’re bound to run into, and his side quest is a bit more interesting than the others. You’ll find Durance as you make your way through Magran’s Fork on your way to Caed Nua. Keep a look out for the fork in the road that this area is named for, and then speak with the man standing in front of the statue. He’s a bit distempering at first, but simply carry on the conversation, and then offer to let him come with you on your adventures to add him to the party.
After you’ve made your way to Caed Nua, you’re going to learn that there is a lot of tough work ahead of you. Cross over the bridge towards the entrance to the old keep, and you should spot this chanter messing around with the wall just north of the bridge. Head up there and speak with him to find out that he too has come in search of Maerwald, but that he wasn’t strong enough to fight the monsters inside the keep by himself. Accept his offer to let him come into the party, and the continue on your way.
Once you’ve freed Maerwald you should travel over to the Woodend Plains via the archway you’ve just constructed via the keep’s menu. Once you arrive, simply continue down the path until you reach a fork in the road. Underneath the sign you should see a young dwarf standing with her animal companion. This is Sagani, and she’s been searching for something for a very long time. Speak with her and go through the various conversation options, and then offer to help her find what she is looking for. She’ll join your party, and you’ll now have a Ranger to go with the rest of your group.
To find the Grieving Mother you’ll need to travel all the way to Dyrford Village. Here you’ll want to move through the village until you reach the southeastern area, where you should spot the Grieving Mother praying, or crying, or just kneeling over a flower bed of sorts. Like Durance, the Grieving Mother is a very mysterious figure, and her conversational options don’t make the most sense all of the time. Just make your way through the massive walls of text you’ll be greeted with (it’s worth reading, we promise), and then add her to your party to have one of the best Ciphers available to you.
Hiravias is a bit of a trickster, and when you meet him, things are no different. To find him you’ll want to head past Defiance Bay and over to Stormwall Gorge. Chances are, you already passed through here if you have the Grieving Mother, but if for some reason you haven’t added either of these companions to your party, now is the time to do so. Head into Stormwall Gorge and follow the road east until you spot a fork in the path. One part will continue forward, and one will head down the side of a cliff. Turn south at this point, and continue along the small path until you spot this little man standing over the fresh corpse of a deer. Speak with him to spark up conversation, and then invite him to join you along your journey.
The final companion you can find is the Paladin, Pallegina Mes Rei. In ofer to find her you’ll need to head to Ondra’s Gift in Defiance Bay and then travel down towards the Vailian Trading Company. If this is your first time traveling this way, you’ll spark a quick cut scene where Pallegina will complain about the trading company to herself, and then head back inside. After the cut scene ends head inside and speak with the head of the trading company to pick up a short side quest called “At All Costs”. Once you complete the quest you’ll have the option to let Pallegina join your party.
