There are two types of currency in Giant Boulder of Death. Coins are the main currency, and gems are the premium currency. Both of them can be purchased from the in-game store, but both of them can also be found in the stages themselves (although coins are FAR more common than gems, obviously). Coins are mainly used to purchase upgrades to your boulder, while gems are used to restart once you die. You can restart up to two times before the game decides you’re done.

There are a large number of upgrades that you can purchase. The three main upgrades for the boulder itself are increasing your jumping height, increasing your steering speed, or making Invinciboulder last longer. The rest of them are for the spin boosts. Rapid Power Bar refills the multiplier bar/Invinciboulder bar faster, while less spikes makes the spike walls partially go away. Coin sucker acts as a magnet for nearby coins and gems. Invinci Size increases the size of your boulder when you go invincible.

Gem Frequency causes gems to appear more often on the stages. Yeti Storm makes yetis, which are worth a high number of points, appear in groups. Dud Mines causes some homing mines to blow up before they get the chance to hit you.

As previously mentioned, the spin boosts will give you three random boosts, slot-machine style, at the beginning of the stage. You can spin for free once every ten minutes (or if you time lapse your phone or iPad, you can spin sooner than that). Every upgrade to a boost costs 2 gems, and every respin costs 1 gem. If you spin before the ten minutes is up, that will cost two gems as well.

You have one primary mission at a time in GBOD. Every time that you complete a mission, you unlock a new person, animal, tree or object, and of course, the more objects that you can run over, the higher your score will be and the more coins you earn. You earn coins depending on how high your score is, in addition to the ones that are collected inside the stages.
