You have a chapter-based single player mode that you start off playing in the tutorial and continue playing throughout the game. Each time you beat one of the chapters, you will earn a Crystal reward, which increases with every successive chapter that you beat. Currently, there are nine chapters; expect there to be more as time goes on and developers update the game.
You’ll randomly get a popup from Obi-Wan Kenobi asking you to review the game. Hit the review button and whether or not you review the game (you can always just go back to the game itself), you’ll get a free 25 crystals for your troubles. Plus, if you link the game to Facebook, you’ll get another 10 crystals for free.
Get rid of all of the junk in your base, as well as all of the rocks, and you’ll earn free crystals around 80% of the time or so. Small junk and small rocks are very cheap to get rid of, medium rocks and junk are slightly less cheap, while large junk and large rocks are much more expensive. The bigger the rocks or junk pieces, the more crystals you’ll generally earn from playing.
If you blew half your crystals during the tutorial, delete the app and then reinstall it, start a new game, and go through the entire tutorial without using any crystals. Save up your crystals until you get enough of them for a new Droid at least, since they will have a permanent effect and will help you to build your base up faster.
Got rid of all of your junk and rocks? Don’t worry, they come back randomly over time, and they come back fairly frequently, so that you can keep checking back and clearing them out. You can theoretically keep earning crystals forever without once having to spend money on Star Wars: Commander. Also, look for an “Achievements” list to pop up with a future update, as well as possibly some events to coincide with other Star Wars releases. These are sure to be loaded with free crystals.
