Installing a Wii Modchip

Installing a Wii modchip may seem scary or difficult, but a solderless modchip makes it very easy. There are still things you need to be careful of, but choosing a solderless option removes the need to use unfamiliar tools (soldering iron). So what do you need to install a solderless Wiikey 2 modchip in your Wii?

Installing a Wii modchip may seem scary or difficult, but a solderless modchip makes it very easy.
There are still things you need to be careful of, but choosing a solderless option removes the need to use unfamiliar tools (soldering iron).

So what do you need to install a solderless Wiikey 2 modchip in your Wii?

You need the following:

Solderless Wiikey 2 mod chip!
Protective sticker for the back of the modchip (included)
Protective cardboard for the front of the modchip (included)
Triwing screwdriver and precision philips head screwdriver (available in the online store or bundled with modchip)
Flat screwdriver for removing rubber feet (see disassemble wii guide)
Razor knife/scalpel/exacto knife for removing paper feet (see disassemble wii guide)

How to install your Solderless Wiikey2 (and most other chips with wiiclips attached)

Firstly, be sure to follow the guide to disassembling the Wii. The guide is very easy to follow.
Once the dvd drive is removed from the Wii, you will be able to install your Solderless Wiikey 2 modchip. You need to prepare your solderless wiikey 2 modchip by sticking the small square sticker to the back of the chip. Now you need to find the microchip on the wii that the modchip will be attached to.

Take the Solderless Wiikey 2 chip and line it up

You need to push down on the black plastic part of the wiiclip, evenly and firmly.

If you don't push the clip down evenly, you risk bending pins on the wiiclip which will result in the chip not functioning.
(We do not accept returns on items damaged due to bad installation.)

If you have pushed the clip down correctly, there should be no gap between the green part of the dvd drive board and the black plastic of the wiiclip.

Now you need to plug the drive back in, but don't close it yet.

First you need to place the protective cardboard over the top of the chip.

Remove the small tear off square carefully and place the remaining cardboard with the square hole sitting over the wiiclip.

Now you need to test the console.

Put the dvd drive back in place, but there is no need to screw it down until it has been tested.

Turn the Wii on.

Be sure that the first disc you put in is a game from your region.

This tells the wiikey2 what your region is, so it knows how to handle games from other regions.
If you put in a game from a different region, your wii will stop playing games from any region.
This is fixable but better to avoid in the first place.

If the game is recognised, the region has been set. Try a game from another region or a backup of one of your original games.
If this reads as well, your modchip is fully functional.

Optional step:

This step is optional and only useful if you plan on moving your console or expect it to get bumped regularly.

You need to be sure that the chip is working correctly before you do this!

It may be very hard to undo and we don't do this ourselves, so you do this at your own risk!

With the chip in place, squeeze a tiny amount of super glue on the drive board.

You want the super glue to be on the red spots shown in the picture below, touching both the drive board and the wiiclip.

A small amount should seep under the clip and then you need to press down hard until it dries.

If you use too much, it will be impossible to remove the chip without damaging the board.
When you re-assemble the Wii, you should tighten the screws at the front of the dvd drive first.
This keeps the Solderless Wiikey 2 positioned correctly in place.

Once your Wii console is back together, you are finished.

Congratulations.

Solderless WiiKey2 now gives you all the features of a WiiKey 2 modchip with a much easier installation process that requires absolutely no soldering.

The whole process including disassembling, modchip installation and re-assembling can be performed in less than 15 minutes for most people and less than 5 minutes with practice for installers.
