Is 2012 The Year For Games?

2012 has the possibility to be one of the best years for games that we have seen in quite a long time. Despite 2011 having game releases like Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 this coming year might just have it topped with games like The Witcher 2, Halo 4, Prototype 2, Max Payne 3, Borderlands 2, Assassins Creed 3 Sniper Elite V2, Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite, Resident Evil 6, Dead or Alive 5, along with many others all set for a 2012 release date. This also appears to be the year of sequels and most if not all of these sequels have been highly anticipated and promise to use up countless hours of your coming days.

Since there is the very real possibility of new gaming consoles like the new Xbox system codenamed "Durango" and the new Playstation system so far called the "Orbis" (mostly a codename as well) being released in 2013 I feel that companies are scrambling to get their games out before all the hype is turned towards the new systems and the games that will come out with them. Personally I'm a little worried that some of these games might be lower quality than we've come to expect from our favorite game developers because of this rush and to make matters worse it is possible that none of the new consoles will have backwards compatibility as we've seen Microsoft and Sony drifting away from this with the PS3's coming out not having backwards compatibility and the Xbox 360 only having the ability to play select Xbox games.

It wouldn't surprise me to see the new consoles having no way to play your old Xbox 360 and PS3 games, in fact, there have been rumors that the coming systems won't even have discs and games will only be available to purchase through downloads via Xbox live and the Playstation Network though this seems unlikely because for one it would complete crush the market for used video games and all but cripple franchises like Gamestop and even some retail stores like Best Buy would take a hit from not being able to sell games.

Despite all these factors I still believe we have an awesome year of games to look forward to no matter what genre of games you like to play and with so many titles to choose from you may want to start planning your gaming and social schedules now :)
