For you to win Starcraft 2 matches as a Protoss, you require a strong combination and formation of units. Most Starcraft 2 Top Protoss tactics are usually determined by the unit combinations and the strategy you use. Knowing the strength and weakness of every unit is of great importance when making the perfect formation for your opponent's forces. So you should research and know everything about your units for you to succeed.
In the beginning of the game, it is advisable that you do some quick map exploration. You can do this using a probe. This enables you to find the enemy faster and know their build order. You can also distract them a little by using hit and run methods or warp in an assimilator, which slows down their advancement.
One usual strategy used earlier in the game is the Zealot rush. Zealots are some of the most feared threats from the Protoss at the beginning of the game. All you need to do is build as many as you can and overpower the enemy with them. To pull this off, you require 3 or 4 gateways, ample mining and pylon construction. This allows you to produce the Zealots as fast as possible.
There are two ways of deploying this strategy. You can either hit hard or hit early. If the enemy is teching up rather than building an army, then it is advisable to hit early. On the other hand, if your opponent is building multiple production facilities, it is advisable that you hit hard.
There are other early game alternatives you can use to overpower your enemy. The alternatives include deploying photon canons within the enemy base or acquiring the Dark Templar for attacking your enemy. They are all effective, but they also have some disadvantages such as hurting your economy.
There are several other unit combinations you can use as a Protoss. These combinations usually come in handy later in the game, after you have survived the early game rushes. At this point in time, you have very many units and knowing which one to use at what time is very important. A good unit combination should have attack power, range and also a good formation.
A balanced force in the mid to late game normally consists of Melee or close combat attack units at the front. Good examples of these units are Zealots, Archons and Dark templars. These units should be used to lead the attack. Also, there should be mid range or support units such as Immortals, Stalkers and Colossi as well as spell casters such as High Templars with Psionic Storm and Sentries to divide your enemy's army and reduce damage taken.
The Melee units are used to lead the attack and absorb most of the damage. The short-to-medium range units are multipurpose. They can be used to attack from a distance or protect the melee and long range units. They are usually the center of the force. Finally the long range units are used to attack from afar. They are your strongest point since they cause more damage and rarely get destro[censored] if defended correctly.
