Three year olds prep up for the season’s first set of stakes races as they approach fast with this weekend. With Busanda Stakes for fillies and Count Fleet Stakes for three year olds, Sham Stakes will also set the temperatures soaring as fresh aspiring three year olds will launch themselves to prove their contention for the year’s most anticipated races, the Triple Crown and Breeders.
While Count Fleet Stakes is the first stakes for all three year olds, it helps recognizing the most aggressive starters for a season, so the best to be followed and watched for may be marked up.
The Count Fleet Stakes is run each year in the first week of January annually at Aqueduct racetrack, Jamaica. Run since 1975, the race was first won by American History, who ran the then distance of a mile in 1:35 flat. The distance over time has been increased to 1 mile and 70 yards which was captured in record time of 1:39.61 by the Achilles of Troy in 2006.
Named after the renowned 1943 Triple Crown winner, Count Fleet, the race shall offer‘upgraded’ prize money of $150,000 compared to initial $65,000.
As for the season’s first fillies’ stakes races, the Busanda Stakes was named for Busanda, who produced the 1966 Horse of the Year, Buckpasser. Busanda was sired by War Admiral and grand-sired by none other than the world number one Man o’ War. Even though Busanda’s career sported a not so aggressive winning spree; she was prominently recognized for her deliverance of Buckpasser by Tom Fool.
Busanda’s career’s major wins include the Alabama Stakes, Suburban Handicap 1951 and consecutive years of the Saratoga Cup in ’51 and ’52. She also won the Diana Handicap for fillies before she made an exit from active racing into broodmare duties.
Also run at a distance of a mile and 70 yards, this stakes race offers a purse prize of $100,000 and will be also conducted at the Aqueduct.
Another prominent race to be held this weekend will be the Sham Stakes at the Santa Anita racetrack. Held annually for three year olds, the race offers a purse prize of $200,000 which has now been handled down to $100,000. The race has been named for Secretariat’s most competent contender, Sham.
Run for a mile and 1/16th and the race is a graded event. Inaugurated only in 2001, the race’s record at 1:47.86 is held by The Pamplemousse for 1 1/8 miles.
While the racing season unfolds, the three year olds will now bloom into perfect candidates all contending for the most important races like the Whirlaway Stakes, the Whitney and Wood Memorial Stakes that should follow soon.
