Fallout 4: Character Customization Guide

Fallout 4 begins with a quaint conversation between you and your spouse in front of the bathroom mirror. As the pair inspect the details of their facial features, you are asked to do the same. For this guide, we will give a brief overview of the character customization features and options available to players at the beginning of Fallout 4.

The first aspect of character creation in Fallout 4 is character appearance. As the couple stand in front of the bathroom mirror, you can alter the hair and facial features of each character as you wish. However, even though you can edit both characters, you will only play as one of them. Select the Sex category option to switch between the two characters in this edit phase. When finished, the character you last edited upon pressing Confirm will begin the game with that character.

From facial features and skin color, to hairstyles and body type, there is a wide range of customization options available to create your unique character. Begin by selecting a general face type, then move on to the Face category to shape the face in more detail. To adjust a particular facial feature, hover over the area to highlight it in green, then edit the Type or Color as you wish. You can also manually Sculpt most facial features to shape and adjust them accordingly. The Extras section contains additional features, such as markings and blemishes, to make a more detailed and unique character. You can also adjust the intensity of these features by changing the percentage value for each attribute.

Once you are finished editing your character’s face, hover over their hair to change its color and style from the long list of options. Then, select the Body section to determine your character’s overall body type by using the triangle. When you are satisfied with your character’s appearance, select Done to Confirm your character. Just remember that the character you currently have selected upon confirmation will be the one you will play as for the remainder of the game.

Make Your Character S.P.E.C.I.A.L

Now that you have completed your character’s physical attributes, it’s time to determine their personality. Upon beginning the game, you will have a brief moment to wander about the house with your spouse before the doorbell rings. When you answer the door, a Vault-Tec representative greets you and offers an interesting proposition.

When prompted with the Registration Form, type in a name for your character. Fallout 4 has programmed a reasonably sized list of popular names into its database. If you happen to choose one of these popular names, Codsworth will actually address you by this name later on, which is pretty cool. Kudos to Fallout 4 for adding these kinds of immersion elements!

On the same form, you will have 21 points available to allot into the following personal attributes: Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck. Divvy these points up how you wish, keeping in mind that each attribute has an effect on how your character functions within the world.

We’ve also drawn up a detailed guide to the Perks in Fallout 4, and how they are forever affected when you fill out that registration form. You should definitely be reading that article (and this one) before you make your selections.

There is one last opportunity to edit your character’s appearance later during the first segment of the game, but beyond this point your character is complete. For an in-depth look at other Fallout 4 features, check out our Fallout 4 Walkthrough and Guide.
