Like every other game in the Versus series, there are a number of different things that can be unlocked through the course of gameplay. There are 4 new characters to be found just through regular play. As you beat the game and complete missions, you will earn Play Points, as these accumulate you earn different awards.

For clarity, beating the game refers to clearing Arcade mode, landing the final blow to defeat Galactus with that particular character.
