I'm not sure this game will ever end. Playing games in short bursts certainly gives you the sense that you're getting a lot of time out of games, with The New Order seemingly taking up permanent residence inside my PS4's disc drive. Being terrible at stealth probably isn't helping the speed at which I'm progressing, and my growing fear of the damn dogs makes me panic every time the alarm is raised. It's good fun, but hopefully I'll finish way before the Old Blood standalone expansion arrives in May. I'll need a bit of a break.
Last week it was Apotheon. The week before it was Rogue Legacy. Now it's Helldivers. I'm officially an indie asshole...
Again thanks to the excellence of the PS4's download service, I bought into this top-down shooter hook, line and sinker. Essentially a watered down version of Destiny, its real appeal, as ever, comes in the form of its multiplayer. Helldivers is so damned hard, that successfully overcoming any planet with some friends in tow is exhilarating and extremely satisfying.
It can also be incredibly stressful, mostly because friendly-fire is always on. Much like Magika, the last game from developer Arrowhead Game Studios, you have no choice as to whether or not bullets will pass through people you're supposed to be helping. You have to be precise and smart with every shot that comes from your gun. If you screw it up, a lot of people are going to hate you. Plus it means you let everyone down. And no doubt failed the level. That's a lot of pressure to take...
It looks tremendous as well, every aspect, right down to the physics on your character's cape, looking like a hell of a lot of time has gone into the development and design. It feels loved, and therefore you eventually start to love it. Or something.
If Helldivers can find a strong community, I can see it being a go-to PS4 game for months to come. I just hope this is the case.
I bet you didn't think you'd catch me playing this one, what with my irrational fear of scary games and Hoovers. But I am, and here are some of my highlights of Luigi's Mansion 2 so far.
If the ending doesn't have me sucking the moon up my vacuum cleaner it's going back to the shop.
That's right, no more Resident Evil HD this week. Instead, I've been playing Revelations 2: Episode 2, which turned out to be mostly quite enjoyable, albeit with some insane frustration thrown in at the same time. Check out my review if you're still on the fence.
I've also been playing Hotline Miami 2, which will be released next week. Can it possibly live up to the original? Is it better than the original? Has Dennaton fucked it? Will Steve be called all the names under the sun after his review goes live? Find out on Tuesday.
