Planets3 Developer Interview .

There is an exciting new voxel based world currently on Kickstarter by the name of Planets³. With just 12 days to go left in their campaign they have already reached 67% of their goal and they are hoping to take it all the way in the next week and a bit. Perhaps the most exciting feature in Planets³ is the craftable vehicles and the fact that it takes place in space instead of on a lonely planet. But don’t take my word for it, check out a recent interview I was fortunate enough to have with CEO of Cubical Drift and Project Director Michel Thomazeu.

Hello there! Thank you for taking time to answer a few questions. Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do on the Planets³ development.
My name is Michel Thomazeau, and I am the project director of Planets³ and the CEO of the Cubical Drift Company.

Planets3 Developer Interview

Lets just get this question out of the way first. I’ve seen a lot of people asking so maybe you can shed some light on it. How is Planets³ different from Minecraft and other similar games?
Planets³ is not a sandbox game, it’s a RPG. It’s a RPG based on a voxel world.
You will have a complete story from the start of the game to the end of the story. There will be NPCs, with their own stories, which will follow you during all your adventure, helping you to progress. There will be a simple but deep craft system. Construction will even take part in the story.
Secondly, its art will be different; the multiple block shapes allow real diversity of creation. As you can see in the concept art, it is really something else.
And third: we are in space!

For you as a developer what is the most exciting thing about this game?
The vehicle system, it will be a great technical challenge and the great creative feature of the game.

Planets³ Vehicles

How will players be able to interact with each other? Can we for example visit each other’s creations? Can we build something together?
Sure thing, we want players to play in Co-op. The story will be much fun and easier if played in multiplayer.

Will the world be destructible in PvP? If we PvP in our newly created land will we end up destroying it if we go into combat there?
As the world (the universe!) is made of voxel, yes if you use “heavy” weapon, you will surely destroy your surroundings.

Will the monsters be there in the multiplayer mode as well as single player?
It’s an option that players will be able to activate.

Planets³ World Zones

Will players be able to trade crafted items with eachother? To that end, will there be an economy in multiplayer?
It’s a free world, if players want to create an economical system in the game they can. But they will handle its process.

What will happen to Planets³ if you don’t reach your funding goal?
We will try a different approach to find the needed funds. But it will not be guaranteed that we will successfully find what we need to develop the game.

What do you have planned for Planets³ after it launches? Will there be new content through DLC or free updates or something similar?
Planets³ will be release in 2 step:
– Race to Space, the first opus, that will cost about $30
– Space enemies, that will cost about the same price.
It’s too early to talk about DLC, we are really at the first step of development.

Planets³ Characters

If you don’t make it to a stretch goal will those items appear in the game at some time in the future?
Yes, I think that if we reached our first objective (250 000), the game sales will be good enough to implement all of the stretch goals in the future.

So there we have it. Planets³ looks to be very exciting and we here at MMOGames wish them all the best in their Kickstarter campaign. If you’d like to know more about the game or want to toss a bit of money towards an awesome indie voxel based rpg then head over to their Kickstarter page before April 6th.
