Between April 26th and April 27th, Final Fantasy XIV director Yoshida attended the Niconico event in Japan (Niconico is a Japanese video streaming site, I think), where he spilled some juicy beans about what’s up and coming in the world of Ezorea. There are definitely things to be excited for in his announcements and, whilst he didn’t go into too much detail about some of the more inciting reveals he had, there’s more than enough for us to start digging into.
First up, the biggest news of the bunch is that Yoshida announced that two new classes will be hitting the game soon. One of these classes will be a dagger class, whilst the other will (finally!) be a gun class. These new classes will be coming sooner than people think, apparently some point after patch 2.3 (FFXIV is currently on patch 2.2).
Unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait until June for more information as Yoshida said that he’s saving information about the new classes for E3 (which is from the 8/9th June, if we include the pre-show press conferences).
Yoshida did say however that the gun class won’t be what people are expecting, and rumors have been a flowing that the class will be some sort of support class. This is interesting, because Limsa Lominsa, one of the three big nations of FFXIV, is home to one of the most prominent gun wielding groups in the game. The gun wielders in Limsa Lominsa however are a part of the Knights, which would make one think that the class would be tied into them in some shape or form. If it’s a support class however, that makes me think of the Corsair from Final Fantasy XI. The Corsair’s from FFXI even share the same sort of clothing as the gun wielders from Limsa Lominsa. It also has to be noted that the Corsair’s are a support class, buffing their team and whatnot.
The knife wielding class reveal is slightly more interesting. Some suspect that it could be a Ninja class, however Thieves in the Final Fantasy series have traditionally been knife wielders, so I’m expecting it to be a Thief class (who would specialise in DPS) more than anything. This would be a bit of a shame because there are only two tank classes in the game, whilst there are many DPS classes available to the player.
Of course the new gun class could be a tank class, and if that was the case then I’m pretty sure everyone’s mind would be blown. Ah, class speculation is so much fun.
Moving on from classes, Yoshida briefly talked about the Gold Saucer. The Gold Saucer, for anyone who isn’t familiar with the series was a HUGE amusement park in Final Fantasy VII, which had players participating in several mini-games. Yoshida hopes to bring the amusement park to Final Fantasy XIV, saying that the place will be absolutely huge and that there will be an assortment of mini-games to play. Yoshida also went further saying that he wanted it to be beyond something which players just wanted to play with their friends, hinting at them adding match-making and Chocobo races.
On the topic of Chocobo’s, the developers talked about new contents involving the creature coming in patch 2.3 or 2.35. This new content will give players the ability to craft Chocobo food which can be given to it to allow it to gain in ranks. This patch may also allow Chocobo training at stables, as well as giving the players the option to dye their Chocobo. Personally I’d love it if the developers could implement a Chocobo breeding system like the one from Final Fantasy XI, and that Chocobo’s would change color depending on how you bred them. There was also some talk of the developers looking into two seated mounts, which I think is a very interesting concept.
Frontlines, PVP content for 24+ players, will be introduced in 2.3. Yoshida said that he wanted to the content to be more forgiving then what PVP there is currently available, and that the large player size should allow for that. Frontlines will consist of three teams, which makes me think that’ll be connected in some shape or form to whatever Grand Company the player chooses. Other PVP friendly content will be coming to FFXIV in patch 2.28, which should allow for current PVP to be a more forgiving to new players and a bit more accessible.
With regards to dungeons, a new water based dungeon will be released in 2.3 as will a new chapter in the Crystal Tower saga. Limit breaks will also be changed to be more class specific, which should give classes a more unique feel. Whilst the visuals for the limit breaks will change, the actual gameplay effects will not.
Marriage will be introduced at some point after 2.3, with players being able to get married at a large church in East Shroud. Wedding costumes, such as bridal gowns, will be available and they will have transparent bits as a part of the costume. Yoshida said that they will fantastic. Players who marry will be given rings, and if one of the players discard a ring then the couple will be divorced. It is unknown whether or not same sex marriage will be in the game, hopefully it will be included. It is 2014 after all; there is no excuse for anyone to be “offended” by same sex marriage.
Onto housing! Personal housing will require a level 50 character as well as a certain rank within their Grand Company. Personal rooms inside FC housing will be larger than inn rooms, with other players being able to enter your room with your permission. Personal housing will be implemented after personal rooms have been implemented into the game, so sometime soon, however they may be delayed to patch 2.35.
That’s pretty much it for the time being! Lots of news, lots of stuff to look forward to, and there is lots to speculate! As always, return back to MMOGAMES.com for the latest news about Final Fantasy XIV and all of your other favorite MMORPGs.
