Hearthstone: Doing Well and Making the Right Picks in Arena Mode

Hearthstone

Hearthstone

For those of you unfamiliar with how the arena in Hearthstone works, here’s the gist of it: After you pay a fee of either 150 gold or $1.99, you are given the choice of three different cards from which you can pick one. Rinse and repeat 29 more times and voilà, there’s your deck! You are also forced to settle on one out of three heroes - we recommend picking the one you are the most comfortable with. Losing three times will disqualify you from participating in Arena battles and that often happens faster than you can say “Double Pyroblast”. Here are a couple of tips you should keep in mind when picking your arena deck and trying to get to 12 wins in total:

Forget Your Decks

Three valiant heroes.

Having a deck that follows a solid strategy is worth gold in Hearthstone. Once you set foot into the Arena however, you should be ready to throw everything you have practiced with that special set of cards out of the window. With the limited amount of available cards, you need to put your usual tactics on the back burner and focus on what you can actually get into your hand. Being successful in this particular game mode is more than just a little tricky - it takes masterminds (or just Mages and Priests) to reach the maximum amount of wins. Sticking to what you know best won’t get you very far on this battleground where anything is possible.

What Combos?

Tough choices.

Are you a fan of putting together a couple of cards to pull of some ridiculous synergy? Yeah, that’s most likely not going to happen when you’re in the arena. Chances are you won’t get any of the cards you usually use in your decks, so it’s about making best use of what you are dealt with. Instead of hoping for a certain set of cards, take a good look at the ones you already have and think hard about what would go best with them. If, by some divine providence, a combo ends up working out, then more power to you!

Expect the Unexpected

*crosses fingers*

One thing that is absolutely essential when trying out the Arena game mode is the following: Remember that some rules only apply in normal matches. While regular decks only allow for two of the same card, being in the arena gives you access to an endless supply of one and the exact same card. Three Mind Controls? Four Healing Touches?  More Blood Lusts? Hell yeah! Just keep in mind that your opponent might also have access to multiple copies of just one card and may very well be packed with legendary minions to boot. The cards available to you here have nothing to do with what you have collected so far, so pretty much anything goes.

Off to a (somewhat) good start!

While it’s best not to hope for certain synergies and combinations, it’s important to keep your eyes on the prize in Hearthstone’s Arena game mode. You have paid real money or gold to enter it, after all. Picking cards when you don’t know what’s ahead can be extremely difficult - but after the first three picks, you should have a goal in mind. Do you want to rely on taunts to keep you safe? Do you want spell damage to boost your other cards and help you win a game? Even though it’s almost impossible to do so, try to steer into a general direction and aim at a certain goal whenever possible.
