Sure, Agar.io is a simple and straightforward MMO. It is intuitive and doesn’t even require a tutorial to play. If you think that you can blindly play the browser game and still succeed in the long run, you are quite wrong. There are several strategies and tricks that will guarantee a longer survival. Naturally, a little bit of luck also plays a central role, but following these tips will come a long way.
Think of Agar.io as a simplified interpretation of the microscopic survival battle on a Petri dish. It’s a game based on the behavior of single-cell organisms, if you will. On the battlefield, you can find bigger and smaller cells. Each player starts as the smallest possible size. All cells grow by eating smaller cells. In order to further boost your growth, you can also eat the colorful food that lies around – referred to as confetti. Since you’re smaller than all other players when you start a round, you should focus on eating the confetti. All you have to do is move your cell across it by moving your mouse. Confetti regularly reappears on the map after it’s been eaten. When taking on other players, keep in mind that your cell has to be at least 25% bigger than theirs.
Obviously, smaller cells have a few tricks up their sleeves to survive on a map filled with bigger enemies. The smaller your cell is, the faster it moves around. If you see a behemoth floating around, you should quickly move away, gaining an advantage with your speed and dexterity. If you are bigger and want to swallow a smaller, quicker cell, you can hit the space bar and split your cell in half. One half will dash forward in the direction that you’re moving and catch that smaller opponent. This move has to be well calculated as it results in controlling two cells that are just half in size. You can split several times in a row into a total of 16 cells. After a while, your cell parts will merge again.
Sometimes, it is not wise to split into half. In those situations, the “W” key might come in handy. This key allows you to split a tiny portion of your mass by shooting it in the direction you’re moving. We recommend hitting “W” whenever you need to be quicker. Keep in mind that you have no control over the split mass once you shoot it.
It is not all butterflies and rainbows when you’ve reached the size of a behemoth. Agar.io also features viruses – the green spikey circles on each map. They will force bigger cells to split into various smaller parts. If you’re smaller than the virus, you have nothing to fear. On the contrary, you can gain an advantage from the viruses by hiding in them when you’re being hunted by a bigger opponent. You can also feed them by hitting the “W” key. If you do that seven times in a row, you can produce a new virus that is shot in the direction you’re facing. Used in the right moment, this move can be used to force a bigger cell to split into smaller parts.
Don’t forget that you can’t grow endlessly in Agar.io. Once you reach a certain size, you will not grow any further. If you still want to extend your mass, you can split in half and allow both pieces to continue growing. Also keep in mind that you will shrink if you do nothing. Keeping still and not eating anything is never a smart move.
