Ah Miniclip, a company that resonated all through my adolescence, we have fond memories together and it seems they’re making a comeback in my life, in the form of 8 Ball Pool. 8 ball pool is an incredibly addictive pool game app for iOS, you are able to play as either a Miniclip member, with your Facebook or as a guest member, once you’ve gone through the process of setting up your account type, you can go through the tutorial game against the computer player, once you have completed the tutorial, you are free to play against real people.
There are five different levels which are; London, Sydney, Moscow, Tokyo and Las Vegas, to play a round in one of these levels, you have to pay an entry fee with your money chips, if you then go on to win the game, you win back your money, plus the money your opponent paid to take part. If you lose the match, you lose the money chips you paid to enter. Oddly enough, you will never actually have zero money chips, even if you do lose every game you play in.

How to play the game is very easy and basic, once you have broken the rack, you move you cue around to allow the line to match up with one or more of the balls that you want to hit into the table pocket, once you’ve lined it up acceptably, you can pull back your cue using the small force gauge to hit the white ball, the further you pull back on the gauge, the more force you will hit the back with. Each player then has a maximum of thirty seconds to complete their turn, if you take longer than thirty seconds, you lose your turn and the other player is then allowed to move the white ball to anywhere of their choosing. To win you must pot either the solid colored balls or the striped balls and the final black ball, which must be potted last.
8 Ball Pool is currently running 3.0.1 and can be downloaded from the app store for free with various in app purchase packages available, it requires your device to be running at least iOS 5.0 or later, it is compatible with most iOS devices.
Something to bear in mind when you are shooting your cue is to watch your power and make sure that you don’t overpower your shot, in which case, all of the balls will end up flying in every direction or under power your shot, which won’t even end up with you touching any of the balls let alone the one you were aiming for, in most cases, however, a soft touch will give the ball a better chance of reaching its target pocket. This is a particularly vital thing to pay attention to, especially when trying to pot into one of those tricky middle pockets. If you do get into the game, play a lot, those who have the highest scores are the people who play a lot and have truly honed their skills as pool players.
One of the things I really liked about 8 Ball Pool was the fact that it was so easy to pick up the game and learn the rules, even if it has been a long time since I actually played pool. I was able to win my first few games easily. Another thing that I really like is the fact that the cue automatically helps me line up my balls so I know exactly what direction the white ball will be going, so I can ensure that one of my colored balls will land in a pocket, the trajectory lines show me the exact angles which I need to be at so I can execute my move properly.
One of the things that I really didn’t like about the game the fame that the graphics were overly simple and crude looking, you can’t really see the numbers on the balls very well, so it makes it difficult to discern which balls are yours and which balls are the opposing players, I even had trouble figuring out which were the striped balls and which were the solid colored balls. Another thing thing that irritated me was the sound, whilst there wasn’t much of it, the clicking sounds of the balls was unrealistic and just annoying, it just seems like the developed put no time and effort into giving the game good sound effects, fortunately, the sound can be turned off. The thing that I hated the most about this game was the fact that the turns were timed, I supposed I can understand it, but sometimes it was difficult to get my cue perfectly lined up and ready to shoot before the timer ran out
Artwork: I give 8 Ball Pool a 6/10 for its artwork, it was very simplistic, too simplistic I felt, and didn’t really have much to it in the way of color and design, it had been designed to be a pool table and nothing more, nothing less, it might just be me, but personally, my games need color and just enough to look at, this game doesn’t have enough to look at.
Music and SFX: I give the game a 3/10 for its Music and SFX , there was no music to this game, which made it feel very bland and dull which was not something I enjoyed whilst playing, I suppose I can understand the need for quiet whilst concentration, but there was not option to even have music. The only sound the game really seemed to have was the irritating clicking noises of the balls hitting each other. The lack of music and irritating sound made this an unenjoyably dull game to me.
Story and Originality: I give the game a 3/10 for its story and originality; the tabletop sports games have been way too overplayed and don’t really feel all that relevant to the younger generations who do hold a large portion of the app market audience. Also, the game does not have any kind of backstory to it, which it could feasibly do by showing that you are promoting some imaginary pool player by honing his skills.
General Gameplay: I give the game a 7/10 for its general gameplay, it is easy enough to play and the controls are very simple to use, however, even the gameplay felt a little empty, what with all of the other lacking areas.
Addictiveness: I give the game a 5/10 for its addictiveness, I can really see how players could possible get addicted to 8 Ball Pool, however I don’t suppose the addiction lasts all that long unless you’re on an intense winning streak.
Overall, I rate 8 Ball Pool 5/10
