A common belief amongst many gamers is that video game movie tie ins are typically terrible and should have never been made. Frozen Free Fall is one of those games that totally dodges the movie video game failure bullet because of the sheer charm it exudes.

This game is based off of one of the best Disney movies of this generation and features an outrageously catchy tune. This game will leave you unconsciously humming the tune for hours after you are done playing.

The game itself, whilst using the same characters, music and tourist sights of Arendelle, doesn’t really have very much in common with the actual story of the movie.

Frozen Free Fall is another match 3 type game, similar in most aspects to classic Bejeweled and the ever growing Candy Crush. The very simple aim of the game is to slide the ice crystals to make a matched set of three or more vertical or horizontal lines, doing this earns you points while removing the matched gems.

You have a total of five allotted lives which if any are lost will take about half an hour to regenerate. There are a variety of special items that you can use to give yourself an easier time in the levels. You have ice picks, which will destroy a single gem of your choosing. If you’re low on turns and you’re nowhere near the goal, you can use a snowball to add an extra five turns. Each new character you encounter also has a special item that you can use; Anna has a magic torch which can melt eight connecting gems, Hans uses his sword to remove whole rows of ice and finally Elsa has her own icy power which will remove all gems of a particular color. As you progress further into the game you can unlock more characters with other abilities to help you make your way through the game.

Frozen Free Fall is currently running version 2.1.2 and requires your device to be running at least iOS 7.0 or later. It is currently available to play in multiple languages and is free down download from the app store with the option to further purchase in app content. The game currently holds a four and a half star rating on the app store with the majority of review showing positive feedback to the game.

There are five different power ups available to purchase in the in app store; ice picks, which can be purchased for ninety nine cents to $4.99 for three to seventeen picks, snowballs, which can be purchased for ninety nine cents to $4.99 for one to fourteen snowballs, move lives can be purchase from ninety nine cents to $4.99 for five to thirty two live, extra time power ups can be purchased for ninety nine cents to $4.99 for one to fourteen power ups, character power ups can be purchased for ninety nine cent to $4.99 for two to seventeen power ups. Each of these power ups can be used to assist you in a variety of ways as you traverse through Arendelle.

While playing Frozen Free Fall you will probably find yourself in need of extra lives, ice picks, moves, and other power-ups.  These things can take a lot of time to earn and save up and you will likely need more of them than you have.  You can either choose to spend real money to get more moves and ice picks or you can just use a hack!

Frozen Free Fall is one of those games that is designed to seem incredibly easy at first, drawing you into its tight embrace and not letting you go when you realize that it is in actual fact very difficult after the first few levels, these are some of my best tips for any Frozen Free Fall addicts.

When you first start playing the game, you’ll see a meter above your gem grid, this is your star meter, typically, to reach your first star, you’ll to get around sixty thousand points, try to do this in as few moves as you can as any left over moves you have when you’ve hit the point threshold will be used to create combo gems which will give you a ton more points and a better chance of managing to get all three stars.

Every so often, you’ll see different puzzle piece types in your gem grid, take advantage of these as you’ll end up with extra points for clearing them. If you are going to create any specific gem lineup, try to create a five gem line as this will make a snowflake that will zap whichever gem and the rest of its particular type that it is swapped with, these are the quickest way of gaining points and clearing your grid for new gems.

If you find yourself completely out of the lives, the good old clock switcheroo does the trick, just set your clock ahead by two and a half hours and all of your five lives should have magically regenerated! Also, those jailbroken iapfree users are in luck with this game.

Frozen Free Fall Review

There is so much that I really enjoy about this game that really sets it apart from other match three type games, I like the fact that it isn’t just another one of those social games where you end up having to bombard your friends with requests for more lives or another ice pick, because you just HAVE to get rid of that one annoying red gem that is standing in the way of victory, you have to say okay, bye to social gaming, you can forget asking your friends to help you out so you’ll just have to let it go. The game itself look amazing, it feature prominent Arendelle sight like the castle and Elsa’s mountain, the characters are also very well done, as they show a wide range of emotions for plain old video game characters, they get excited for you when you’re doing well in a level, and stare are you disapprovingly, disappointed with your failure, when you’re doing exceptionally bad.

There are whole lot of levels to work your way through, so there is definitely a lot of fun to be had with this game.

Sadly, Frozen free Fall in reality just seems to be a great big copycat clone of every other match three type game to have ever been made, it doesn’t add anything new to the game type to make it stand out from the rest. I wish that the creators of this game would have considered using the actual movie soundtrack in the game, I would have enjoyed playing a whole lot more, I could have even sang along while I waited for my lives to refill, rather than just closing the app and ignoring it before I realize I need to play some more like four days later. The game however, does not try to push it like Candy Crush and just sticks with the minimum amount of levels.

For some reason, the game gave me issues when I attempted to connect my progress to my Facebook account, and no pun intended, just completely froze up, I was able to play fine without the Facebook integration, however, my competitive spirit just wasn’t there.

Ratings:

Artwork: I give Frozen free Fall an 8/10 for its artwork. The artwork itself is definitely one of the best things about this game; the characters are taken straight from the movie (albeit not as good quality) and are designed with the perfect animations.

Music and SFX: I give the game a 6/10 for its music and SFX. I feel like there is so much more they could have done to this game in regards to its music, playing tha actual soundtrack in the background would make for a much more enjoyable playing experience, and it would probably allow for an appeal to a wider audience, especially younger players, when it comes to Frozen, people go for the sisterly love and stay for the musical numbers and the awesome reindeer Sven. Instead they opted for a nondescript tune that plays over and over again until at least one of your dreams per week features the tune as its soundtrack. The SFX themselves are fine, but nothing to write home about.

Story and Originality: I give the game a 5/10 for is story and originality. As you can tell with this game, it is pretty much just a clone of every other match three type game to have ever existed, so the concept of originality is completely lost. The game doesn’t have anything new to bring to the table; it’s essentially just Bejeweled with a heavy dusting of snow.

General Gameplay: I give the game an 8/10 for its general gameplay. How to play the game is very easy to grapy, it isn’t complicated or difficult to understand and the tutorial part of the game explains everything fairly well.

Addictiveness: I give the game a 9/10 for its addictiveness. Like every other rage inducing match three out there, I completely gave myself over to this game and became a mindless Frozen drone. I found it fairly easy to hit three stars on all of the levels I played so I just wanted to keep on playing more and more.

Overall I rate Frozen Free Fall 7/10
