Battle Bowlers Cheats, Tips & Review

If you are like me, you will always keep watching cartoons no matter what your age is, and along the way, you will start liking some of the cartoon characters. How cool it would be if you had a game based on those cartoons where you could control your favourite cartoon characters on your finger tips and fight the opponents in your style! Cartoon Network has come up with a solution especially for children who do not have mind-blowing, budget-killing computers. Cartoon Network has released a game named Battle Bowlers based on the famous Cartoon Network cartoon series: The Amazing World of Gumball. Battle Bowlers is a browser based game meaning it can be played inside the browser without actually installing it into the computer.

Richard Gumball, the kids’ dad takes Gumball, Anias and Darwin to the bowling where he keeps playing for a long time. He likes bowling because even though it is a sport, you spend 90% of the time eating and relaxing. Kids start to get bored and ask Richard to take them home. While the discussion is going on, the bowling pins Richard had just knocked out come to life and start attacking at them. That is when the kids come to rescue. Your mission in the game is to take control of the characters and wipe the mutant bowling pins out before anyone gets hurt.

It is an arcade style game where the main purpose is to knock out all the mutant pins by hitting them with the bowling ball. It is a single screen game where the player can move across the screen and mutant pins of different size, speed and strength approach from different angles. Player can move using the WASD keys and shoot the bowling ball at pins using mouse click. The ball bounces off the edges of screen and needs to be picked up to attack again. The player has health which is shown at the top centre of screen with number of hearts. Whenever a pin manages to touch your character, the player loses one heart. If he loses all hearts, he loses the level. Good news is, you can retry unlimited number of times. Certain number of pins are to be knocked down in each level. As the level ends, the player is rewarded a score based on his performance in the game which is indicated by number of stars. Very high score means three stars.

There are three characters you can choose from in the game and all have their strengths and weaknesses. You can switch between the characters immediately while playing the game. Pressing 1 brings Anias, 2 brings Gumball and 3 is for Darwin.

  • First of all, my favourite; Anias. She specialises in power. Her attacks are more powerful than her brothers. Her attacks usually take on less hit to knock the pins out. Her weaknesses are speed and health. She only starts with two hearts and is slowest among the siblings.
  • Second comes Gumball. He specialises in health starting with 4 hearts. He is faster than Anias but slower than Darwin. His attacks are of average power.
  • Darwin with his long legs, as you may have guessed, specialises in speed. His attacks are weakest and he starts with 3 hearts. He is the best option if you are good with controls and like to dodge the enemies.

There are two types of attack in the game: The main attack and the special attack.
The main attack is to shoot the pins with bowling ball. You can knock out more than one pins in a single shot resulting in a combo. Combos not only eliminate multiple enemies at once, they also increase your score. You must retrieve the ball to attack again.

The special attack is called stomp. When stomp is used, the character destroys all enemies around him. To use stomp, you must hit spacebar. The stomp attack then takes 20 seconds to recharge before you can use it again. The status of stomp is shown by a bar at the lower left corner of the screen.

When you kill enemies, some of them will drop power-ups. These power-ups will give you special ability for a limited time. Every power-up has a different icon thus you can recognise all power-ups even before collecting them. They appear for a limited time and vanish if not collected.

  • Perfect Aim: It will show you the path along which the ball will move after you have shot it. Thus you can hit the ball with maximum accuracy. It also helps you score more combos.
  • Heart: The heart will add 1 heart in the player’s health allowing him to take one more hit before going down.
  • Multi-ball: It allows the player to shoot three balls at once. All three balls stay on the screen unless the player picks one up. The player can pick any one of the three balls, the other two will vanish.
  • Mega-Ball: Mega ball enables you to shoot bigger balls. Bigger ball means more range and more damage. It allows you to pierce through the shielding damaging otherwise invulnerable enemies.
  • Crazy-Ball: The crazy ball does not stop and keeps on bouncing against the walls at maximum velocity. It only stops when the player fetches it back or it falls into the gutter.
  • Bomb-Ball: Bomb-Ball, when hitting the enemies, creates an explosion and keeps on it journey straight forward. The explosion does some extra damage and also helps to pierce through shields and attack otherwise invulnerable enemies. The explosion spreads beyond the ball and damages other enemies coming in it’s range.

You can also stack multiple power-ups on each other. It will create a power-up combo and be even more effective than the individual power-ups. For example, if you collect Multi-Ball and Crazy-Ball simultaneously, you will be able to shoot three balls at once which will keep on bouncing at maximum velocity. If you stack Mega-Ball with Bomb-Ball and Crazy-Ball, your player will shoot a huge ball which will keep bouncing at maximum velocity and create an explosion every time it hits an opponent. Obtaining multiple power-ups of the same category however, only counts as a single power-up.

Different enemies appear as you proceed in the game. The further you go, the tougher enemies keep on appearing. They, like the player’s characters also have their strengths and weaknesses. Some are high speed spiky timid guys while others are slow, overweight body builders. Some even appear on the screen with a table in front of them. But if you stay consistent and decide wisely how to tackle every one of them, you can easily knock them out.

Let us now take a look at the specialities of the enemies and then we will discuss which tricks you can use to easily eliminate them.

Pinhead: The first enemy you come to know as you start the game is Pinhead. These are neither smart nor strong. They take the most direct way to the player and can be eliminated with only one hit from any player.

Eyeclops: Pinhead’s elder brother is a bit stronger and faster—and angrier. It has only one eye but shows more anger than other enemies will show with, well a bunch of eyes. It takes two hits from Darwin and Gumball but Anais can take him out in a single shot.

Cracker: The body builder pin! It looks like the toughest pin in the game but is slow as hell. It takes two shots from Anais and three from Gumball and Darwin. It almost never manages to catch you no matter which character you are playing with.

Spike: This trophy like opponent is faster than any pin. It moves in bursts, stays still for a while and then move in your direction again. While this buddy can be eliminated with a single shot from any player, it can sometimes prove to be the deadliest. Eliminate him as soon as possible.

Toe Jammer: It is a bowling shoe that fires greenish destructive material from it’s mouth. The projectile though slow can be deadly. The Toe Jammer is immune to normal hits when it’s mouth is closed. When it opens it’s mouth, it becomes vulnerable and can be shot dead by a single hit from any player.

Bad Toe Jammer: Toe Jammer’s big brother. Red in colour and shots multiple projectiles at once. It is also attackable only when it’s mouth is open. As long as they keep their mouth shut, they are safe. But they open their mouth and become vulnerable; just like humans.

Splatterbrats: This purple blob falls from the ceiling and is best eliminated as soon as possible because given some time, it will divide itself into three rolling pins which will try to hit you in the face. Whether in the blob or the pins form, it takes just one hit from any player.

Tableface: This green blob is called Tableface for some reason. It appears on the screen with a table in front of him. The table protects it from normal hits from the front side. It can sometimes be very hard to hit as the opponents always tend to keep their face towards the player and it cannot be harmed from the front side with normal shots. Your best shot against this opponent is attack it from sides or behind. Another way is to attack it with Bomb-Ball which pierces through shields or wait for it to come near you and then use the special stomp fire.

The Boss:

At the final stage, you will have to defeat the Boss to get rid of these monster pins once and for all. The boss has two final forms called the Rolling Boss and the Bowling Boss respectively. As Rolling Boss, it has three types of attacks. It moves up and down across the screen and fires projectile at the player. Sometimes it stops and extends it’s claws to damage the player. You better switch to Darwin and run when this happens.
In it’s third type of attack, he moves across the screen in straight lines to mow the player down while all the smaller bowling pins help him taking the player down.

After you have defeated the boss in it’s first form, it will come back to take revenge in a more tougher, angrier form; the Bowling Boss form. In this form, it has two main attacks. In it’s first attack, it mimics the player. It tries to take you out by hitting with the balls. It can also use some of the power-ups like Mega-Ball resulting in bigger balls which are harder to dodge than the normal ones.

In it’s second type of attack, the Bowling Boss dashes towards the player which also causes some pieces of ceiling to fall down. Defeating the final form of the boss is significantly difficult but as I said earlier, with consistency you will win.

Badges: The game also has some badges indicating expertise of the player.

  • 3 Star General: This badge is earned by earning 3 stars in 10 stages.
  • Tenemy Combo: To acieve this badge, you will have to eliminate 10 enemies at once.
  • Triple Threat: This badge is fairly easy to achieve. It is gained by defeating 25 enemies with all 3 characters.
  • Full Deck: Gaining all enemy cards or in other words, completing the game will earn you this badge.
  • Stack Attack: Stacking 3 power-ups at once gives you the stack attack badge.
  • Like a Boss: This hardest to earn badge can only be earned if you defeat the boss without getting hit even single time. Pretty hard eh?

Battle Bowlers Cheats & Tips

Here are some cheats, tips and tricks which you can use to get ahead in the game.

  • You can switch between Gumball, Anais and Darwin between the game using 1,2 and 3 keys. Anais has the best attack and Darwin has strongest legs. Use Anais to attack and Darwin to dodge the enemies. It can be difficult at first switching multiple times in the game but you will get used to it as the time passes. You can also use some fairly simple scripting software like autohotkey to automatically switch players every time you attack and run.
  • Try to use the stomp as frequently as possible and take out as many opponents as you can. When the stomp attack is fully charged, run around across the screen and collect as many opponents around you as you can. It will not only get rid for a lot of enemies for you but also hit a multiple attack combo to boost your high score.
  • Do not shoot the ball towards every enemy you see. Some are slow and can be dodged easily while some are fast and need to be taken out as soon as possible. Decide in advance which enemies you should shoot at first sight and which you should wait.
  • Use the power-ups wisely. The power-ups have have a countdown timer which starts as soon as you pick up the power-up. If you see two power-ups of the same type, do not collect them at the same time. Collect one and start shooting balls and only pick up the second when it is about to disappear. This technique will give you maximum time for the power-ups. On the other hand, if you happen to stumble upon two power-ups of different types, collect them simultaneously as they will stack up and become more effective than individual ones.
  • Attack enemies which are immune to normal attacks with stomp attacks or Bomb-Balls. It is easier than going behind them or waiting for them to open their mouth.

Battle Bowlers Review

Battle Bowlers is a fairly simple game which works in the browser and can run on even the slowest computers. Battle Bowlers has used characters from one of the most famous Cartoon Network shows which makes the game more interesting. Despite being simple, it has the ability of engaging children for a short amount of time. You can sign-in on Cartoon Network site and your progress will be saved. You can then continue from where you left from any device. Also, there are no catches in the game. There are no “Buy these power-ups if you want to win the game” or “you will have to wait for x hours before you can play again” which is nice.

I was not impressed by the graphics and physical engine of the game. I could also not find a button to maximize the screen. You can only shoot as long as your cursor is in the game. Often times while playing the game, you will lose the stage because your cursor moved out of the game. It becomes fairly annoying sometimes. Also, the game is shorter than it should be. Only 24 levels. One can literally finish the game in a single sitting.
Artwork: The artwork of the game is awkward. Graphics are low, colours are dull and animations are meh. 2/5

Story and Originality: There is no story in the game. There are tons of bowling games in the market. What the developers did was combine bowling with arcade and Gumball. 2.5/5

Addictiveness: For kids, yes. The game becomes somewhat addictive for a short period of time. The badges, challenges and comparison with friends keeps them interested for a while but not too long 2.5/5.

Overall score: 2.3/5
