Start On the Sides: Since the whole point of the game is to light up the game board, you really want to start the game by going down the sides. As you progress through the game, you will find it more difficult to light up the game board, especially on the sides where it’s harder to match the gems. You want to get into the groove of starting on the sides right away, so that you can match them first, and then begin moving towards the inside of the game board until you reach the center. One good thing about this trick is that you will start to notice that the middle of the board will consist of like gems, which means either you won’t need to match any because they will already be matched up, or you will only need to move a few pieces to get the entire middle part to match and light up.

Start at the Bottom: Although this seems contradictory to the tip above, you can also choose to match your gems by starting at the bottom. When it comes down to it, starting on the sides is better than anywhere else, but starting at the bottom is a clear second-place tip if you are looking for other good alternatives. The concept of starting at the bottom in this game is also relevant in other match games like Candy Crush, with the thought being the gems will fall down from the bottom matches, and you will be more likely to find your combinations as they begin to fall a few places from their starting location. If you go from the bottom you are also going to have a better chance of matching the gems and clearing the board before your moves are up, due to the gems falling and making their own matching combinations. For instance, you can make a move at the bottom of the board and then as the top gems begin to fall, you might end up clearing gems that would take 3 or 4 moves away from you if you had to manually match them.

Always Try For 4 or 5 Matches: When it comes to matching gems, although this is a 3-match puzzle game, you always want to aim higher than just matching 3 gems at once. If you match 4 gems you get the special combination gem and matching 5 gems will get you the ability to get rid of all the gems in that color. The special abilities that you will have access to if you aim for the 4 and 5 gem combinations is well worth the extra few seconds of scanning the board to see if any of those moves are available. Plus, the more gems you clear in one move means you will have more moves left over for the harder situations like the sides of the board. Since matching 3 gems doesn’t get you anything special, it only makes sense to just always aim for the higher combinations, and then settling on the match 3 only when you have to.

Sometimes You Just Have to Start Over: One trick to this game that will save you a lot of frustration and time is just knowing sometimes you need to restart the board. You might get half way into the board and realize it’s just not going to workout, and sometimes the board will not give you good opportunities to clear the board or make good combinations. If you are having issues with finding ways to make combinations to light up the board, just realize it and start over. The quicker you come to this realization the better, since you don’t want to spend 20 minutes on trying to make it work, then realizing it won’t, and then clearing the board after you wasted all that time. Just like with every other matching game out there, you have to admit defeat and start over in order to beat the level.

Know The Free Fall Gem: In this game, you will have a gem that is called the Free Fall gem, which you can have access to during that particular game. When you match 4 or more gems, the Free Fall gem will become available on the board. This gem lights up from left to right or up and down. If the gem is lighting up left to right, then it will clear the gems horizontally in that row. If you see the gem lighting up in an up and down manner, that means that the gem will clear that row of gems in a vertical manner. The gem itself will move around the board and that means you will be able to use it in any location on the board where you need help clearing the gems. This is also a good reason to focus on clearing out 4 or 5 combinations, because special gems like this will fall and make it easier for you to clear the levels.

Review of Maleficent Free Fall

Maleficent Free Fall comes at the heels of a previously-released hot game, Frozen Free Fall, so the expectations were that this game would be similar as far as implementing the story of the movie into the game. If you have ever watched Maleficent, then you know that this character is made out to be evil and is someone who gets really mad at the smallest things, but also is unique because she turns into a dragon when she gets super mad. As you begin this game, you will notice that you are playing the role of the Dew Fairy and you have a young Maleficent as your companion. She has a pair or horns on her head, which stays in line with the movie since she is considered to be an evil woman with magical powers.

You will notice that the gem board is setup a lot like most other gem puzzle games, but you still have a tutorial at the beginning to help guide you along what matching 3, matching 4 and matching 5 gems does and how that impacts the gems around it. The game itself is really easy to understand as you just swipe your finger on the screen to move the gems so that you can create at least a 3-gem match. Obviously, the gems that you are trying to match need to be the same color, and matching 4 will give you a power gem. If you match 5 gems in one row, which can be in the shape of a “T” or “L” you will get a special gem that allows you to clear of all the gems in that color off the board. The main point of the game is that you want to light up the entire game board, which can be done in a variety of ways.

The cool thing about Maleficent Free Fall is that as you keep progressing through the game, you will notice that Maleficent becomes an older woman. This change from her to a young girl to an adult means that you will get new and special powers and bonuses for when you match the gems, but it also means that your boards will become more difficult, and it will be harder to level up and clear the board. The whole entire game plays out as a story, so each level becomes a chapter in this story, but overall it still keeps the sample match 3 premise as almost every other similar type of game. The only unique thing about Maleficent Free Fall is the powers and magic that can be used by Maleficent to either help you clear the board or make you run into obstacles along the way. As you clear out each level, you will gain access to the various types of magic and magic points, so you can use the magic points to get various types of power-ups. This is fun because you are not given any power-ups and you are not limited in the power-ups you can use or have access to, since all of the power-up abilities come from how many magic points you earn throughout the game.

Overall, this game can be fun if you watched Maleficent or enjoyed the story behind the Disney movie, but it’s nothing that you really haven’t seen or played a million other times before. One thing about match-3 puzzle games is that they are all fairly similar, with so many out on the market it’s hard to come up with variations that haven’t been done before, and you shouldn’t expect this to be anything complicated or new. You will likely enjoy it as it is a good time waster or a good game that you can play with your children, but it’s also a game you will get bored with over the period of a couple hours, and eventually you will just put it down for good. The only other nice thing about this game is that they just added over 40 new levels and 2 new game modes, so there is still new things being added to this game, and that alone might keep people interested in coming back to play every so often.

Ratings

Gameplay: When it comes to gameplay, Maleficent Free Fall gets a 9/10 because it’s a really easy game to play in terms of matching the gems, and there is no lag or connection errors that complicate this game any more than in needs to be. Some of the higher levels in this game are more difficult, where you might have to rely on some magic to get the board cleared and the gems moved to the right spots. You will find yourself having fun matching the gems and using the magic to help you, but you won’t be blown away by anything in this game besides the transformation of Maleficent. It gets a 9 though because this is a really fun game, especially if you have children and enjoy playing kid-friendly games with them.

Music: The music was pretty creepy at times during this game, which went well with the story and the mystery and magic that was used during different parts. The music gets a 9/10 because I thought it was right on queue as far as knowing when to play a higher-pitched scary type of music as opposed to a steady just low but still creepy type of sound during other parts of the game. Whether you were matching gems on the board or using a magic spell Maleficent dreamed up, the music went really cohesively with the gameplay, and that’s important for a game like this where the story is priority.

Graphics: Graphically, this game gets an 8/10 because there is nothing that special about it, but the graphics that are used to tell the story of Maleficent is what’s really interesting. The gems look like standard gems and the way the board is cleared is just like every other game, so it’s not like a whole lot really stands out. Now, the graphics that are used to tell the story of Maleficent and the rotators you will see spinning in certain levels, along with the evilness of Maleficent trying to get revenge does add a few points to the graphics chart. The story and Maleficent herself contain the best graphics in this game, with so many mysterious ways this storyline can go, it does make for interesting animations. However, it’s still a fairly bland game in terms of graphic abilities so it gets a 7/10 in that department, just because I didn’t see anything that really captivated me to think of how unique or amazing it was.

Overall: The overall feeling of this game is that it is fun, especially if you are into Maleficent the movie, and enjoy seeing recreations of different forms of entertainment. You will find yourself having fun with the power-ups and magic abilities of Maleficent, and it’s cool to see her transform from a little girl into a woman and have different magic abilities as she ages. The progression of the story told through each level is nice and it’s a game that does have a few special and unique characteristics, but overall it seems like a match 3 game that you have already played before. Overall this game gets a 7/10 because although it’s fun and it has a great story to it, this is one of those games you can play for only so long before you just get bored with the simplistic nature of the gem matching.
