Our Best Tips & Tricks

Defensive

Always use your disabler (the spider shot) when available – there is no point in keeping it for later because it recharges anyway; it also gives you an early advantage too.

Don’t dodge too soon or too early. Your ship will be damaged.
In battles, don’t forget the magic trio: tap the barrel, slash the bomb and ignore the crate. Doing otherwise will not give you the results you desire.

Offensive

Aim carefully – If you are fighting multiple targets it will be best to try to hit them both with one shot. Be careful though not to miss. It can be tricky.

Using the special gun can be rewarding even when there is no target available on the enemy ship. However, using it when the target is on will instantly destroy the enemy ship.

Never use your speed buffs in exploration. They are needed for racing.

When racing keep an eye on the radar to make sure that you are on the same trajectory as the enemy ship. Follow the wind (the line that strikes the compass) to your advantage.

Utility/ Other

Log with your Facebook account because you will receive a substantial reward.

Always try to do all the objectives even though they are optional – more resources to spend, more upgrades affordable.

Make sure you visit the tavern once in a while and hire crew members. The more the merrier. Also, pay attention to their perks some of them may come in very handy.

The secret of the mini-game of avoiding the enemy ships is patience learn their trajectory and dodge them elegantly.

Assassin’s Creed: Pirates Review

Even though I am not an avid fan of the Assassin’s Creed franchise I know enough about the plot and the history. However, the moment the game loaded and the music started I forgot all about what I mentioned before and felt like a dream came true – I was finally in Jack’s Sparrow universe (I know Jack has nothing to do with Assassin’s Creed: Pirates but let me live the dream). I was very eager to play the game and I wasn’t disappointed when I realized I am Alonzo Batilla. I was still a captain after all. I enjoyed the game for its atmosphere because it made me feel like a part of the game – I know it may seem exaggerated but the game progression and the ability to upgrade your ship, your crew, the fact that you can unlock of new ships, plundering enemy ships will definitely leave you with a “not bad” expression on your face no matter how much of a hard-to-impress person you are (remember that Assassin’s Creed: Pirates is a mobile device game).

The game mechanics are complex and the story will surprise you often. You will lose the track of time because of all the exploring you can do – I was pleasantly surprised when it started to rain and it directly had an impact on my ship’s performance for example. I don’t want to spoil anything so I am not getting into details but there is a rumor that even Blackbeard himself sail the same waters you are sailing. One thing is certain about Assassin’s Creed: Pirates – it gives the player enough liberty so he cannot get bored easily. It is long enough for a casual player to keep him busy for weeks and it is long enough for a player that wants to finish the game as soon as possible to feel accomplished.

Of course, from time to time, you will get very frustrated because the enemy ship moves too fast and you just can’t reach it or even though you totally dogged that cannon fire hit you anyway or, in my case, the game SFX decided to stop but I never said that Assassin’s Creed: Pirates is perfect. There is no such thing as a perfect game and you may not even like the game. But it is definitely worth a try.

Ratings

Artwork: I give Assassin’s Creed: Pirates 9/10 for the artwork. It is incredible for a game to look this good on a mobile device. Even though there is still room for improvement, the developers did their job more than fine. The details of the ships, the water, the background, the characters artwork (which is cartooned but looks great nevertheless) are a pleasure to the eye. The only reason I am not giving the game a 10/10 (and it took me a while to decide this) is that some of the animations are not as complex as I’ve seen in some other mobile games.

Music & SFX: 9/10. Finally a game with nice sounds exists. As I mentioned before in the review, this game is like the Pirates of the Caribbean game we never had. The music basically teleports you to the 18th century – it is fun, catchy and makes you feel adventurous. The sound effects are good and they suit well the piracy theme for as long as they work – Unfortunately I encountered some SFX issues after playing the game for a while (and I read some reviews on the Play Store that some other people did) but a restart of the game should solve the problem.

Story/Originality: I give the game 10/10. The game is a spin-off of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag but that’s a game that is not available on mobile devices and it belongs to the same company anyway so that’s ok. Besides that, Assassin’s Creed: Pirates is part of a niche (naval combat) that is not common on mobile devices so the rating is fair and square. The story is pretty good too having a solid plot and a nice turnaround. Good job Ubisoft Paris for this.

General Gameplay: I give the game 8/10. Assassin’s Creed: Pirates is not a too hard game. You may encounter some challenges from time to time but overall the game is fairly intuitive and once you get the hang of it, you should be fine. The only problem you can encounter with the gameplay is that people with big fingers and/or a small screen can (and will) struggle for a bit.

Addictiveness: Assassin’s Creed: Pirates scores 8/10 here. It is in the nature of this games (action-adventure) to make you addicted to them but only until you finish them for the first time (and it will take you a long time, believe me). The game loses its repeatability after your first run and that is directly related to the addictiveness. After that it is only about being nostalgic or wanting to take every possible upgrade for your ship and crew or exploring every corner of the map – however this feeling of addictiveness will slowly fade away.

Overall, Assassin’s Creed: Pirates deserves a score of 8.5 out of 10.
