My Country Review

When I first started playing My Country, I had to go through a small tutorial that taught me all the basics I needed to know about the gameplay. I think a tutorial in a feature-rich game such as My Country is very nice, because that way players will learn how to play the game properly and will be less likely to get confused when they are playing the game on their own. The first thing I noticed about My Country is that the world map is pretty small but very detailed. You could tell from a distance which buildings were for what, but you can also zoom in and out if you want to have a closer look. The user interface is very clear, even though there are a lot of buttons all over the screen. Every button has its own functionality and you will learn more about them while you are playing the game.

In My Country, there is a “Your Office” tab where you can check everything that is going on in your city at the moment. I think this is a very nice feature because of the fact that it puts everything about your city in one place, and there are several options that will make it easier for you to run your city, especially if it has grown into a mega city already. A nice aspect is that you can connect with your email address and play My Country Online, where you can compare your city with other peoples’ cities, make friends and exchange gifts. You can also play with your real life friends by connecting with your Facebook or Twitter, which also rewards you with a nice sum of in-game cash.

I have played My Country for several hours before I started writing this review, and in all that time, I didn’t face a single advertisement other than the developer making an announcement. It is understandable when free-to-play games have advertisements implemented in them, because the developers also need to make money somehow. Having no advertisements at all is of course way better, because this guarantees that players will not get obstructed or annoyed.

There are only two negative aspects which I experienced during my gameplay. The first one is that when you run out of the cash, which you receive at the start of your gameplay, it is hard to earn and save up more cash. In-game cash is the lifeline of My Country, and you need a lot of them in order to keep constructing buildings and keep speeding constructions up. The problem this brings is that the developers offer cash packages in the in-game store for real money, so the game feels a little bit like a cash grab.

The second negative aspect is already kind of mentioned above. In the beginning, you can easily construct buildings and speed them up with cash, but later on the construction times can be several hours up to whole days. Of course you can speed these up by using cash, but the longer the construction time is of a building, the more cash you need to pay. The developer should maybe look into making either the construction times shorter or making the in-game cash cheaper to purchase. Other than these two aspects, the game is pretty solid in my opinion.

My Country Ratings

Artwork: I give My Country an 8/10 for its artwork. I like the fact that the developers choose to have simple graphics in My Country, because of the fact that it is a nice simulation game. Having 3D and High Definition graphics in a game such as this just distracts people from the gameplay itself in my opinion. The game made me feel like I was playing an older Sim City game, where I had to build a successful town and then upgrade it to make it the best city in the world. The user interface is clear, buttons are nicely in order and clear. It is easy to identify what goes where and what does what. The world map starts small but is upgradeable to a much bigger map. It is very detailed because you can tell from a distance what every building is supposed to be.

Music & SFX: I give My Country a 7/10 for its music and SFX. There is a soundtrack during the gameplay of My Country, but the developers did a good job in keeping the volume low. The soundtrack reminds me of something you would also hear in the older Sim City games, which is a very nice touch. You do not really need a soundtrack in order to make this game entertaining, especially because there are many sound effects implemented in all of the games’ buttons and buildings. Tapping on buildings and objects will give you a confirming sound effect, which is really nice because of the fact that there are so many things going on in the gameplay itself.

Story & Originality: I give My Country a 7/10 for its story and originality. I have seen at least a dozen of other city building simulators in the app stores, but that doesn’t take away that My Country has originality in it. You literally need to take care of everything that has to do with running a successful city, such as electricity, ecology, livable buildings for your citizen and evolve the job sectors so everyone can earn money. I think because My Country has a lot of depth and looks like the old Sim City games, is what made it really popular among mobile gamers. There is also a small tutorial at the beginning of the game where you also will learn the story behind the game. The story is about how it is your dream to become the mayor of the best and biggest city in the world, building huge skyscrapers and businesses.

General Gameplay: I give My Country an 8/10 for general gameplay. There are a lot of options, buildings and other things to explore in My Country, but once you get used to the gameplay, everything will become straightforward. This doesn’t mean that the game will become boring, especially because of the fact that it is absolutely packed with new buildings and objects to explore. My Country has a familiar gameplay feeling, where you need to level up by constructing buildings and in turn you can expend your land plot and build more. The controls are smooth and because of the tutorial, everything is explained rather well.

Addictiveness: I give My Country a 7/10 for addictiveness. The game itself is really fun to play, especially because there are no energy or live limits. You can just log in and play as you want. The only problem is that the construction times are going through the roof sometimes, where you will have to wait for hours. If you do not have the cash to instant-build, then you will have to have a lot of patience. You can of course spend real money to purchase more in-game cash but not everyone want to spend money on a free-to-play game.

All things considered, I give My Country a 7/10.
