Instead of flapping your way as far as you can, Splish Splash Pong forces you to sharpen your reflexes to safely guide your bird through shark-infested waters, collecting as many coins as you can before a shark catches you.

Despite the name, Splish Splash Pong, for iOS,  isn’t actually a game of pong with updated graphics, but rather a complete overhaul and remix of the classic game of Pong. In Splish Splash Pong, you send your character swimming back and forth across a small stretch of water to collect coins; these coins are located in front of a “slingshot” that will send you flying in the opposite direction if you run into it. To avoid the sharks swimming in the water, you tap anywhere on the screen to change the direction in which your character is traveling, which serves as a “dodge” function for when you find yourself in a tight spot. You could continually dodge sharks by rapidly tapping the screen to float in one spot, but to gain points you have to collect as many coins as you can, which forces you to roam across the screen and risk being eaten by a shark.

As a little bonus to avid players, Splish Splash Pong allows you to buy extra character skins via FaceBook likes, coins, or IAP (In-App Purchases). You gain coins by collecting them within the game, or from watching special video promotions for other apps, which rewards 1,000 coins. Character skins generally cost 5,000 coins, so you’d better get tapping!

This skill comes with practice, but it is important for all new players to note that some sharks move faster than other. This little tip could save you some trouble of wondering why you lose before knowing what even hit you.

Splish Splash Pong Review

Splish Splash Pong is a fun little time waster, perfect for when you have 2 or 3 minutes to blow and nothing to do. The art style is quite vivid and very pretty, while the ocean waves soundtrack is very calming. The SFX in Splish Splash Pong are very satisfying in a strange way; hearing the clink of the gold coins becomes an aural addiction in and of itself.

The only downsides of Splish Splash Pong are the lack of depth in terms of gameplay, and the tendency for the game to provoke “rage quits” when you lose too often (which is all the time, since you can’t technically “win” Splish Splash Pong). Other than these small issues, Splish Splash Pong is probably one of the best Flappy Bird or Pong type offshoots I’ve ever played.

Ratings

Artwork– Splish Splash Pong is a wonderfully animated pixel art game; I enjoy the visual style very much, and I think the devs chose the perfect style for the mood they were trying to create. Artwork receives a 9/10

Music/SFX- The soundtrack in Splish Splash Pong is very relaxing, and creates a great atmosphere of calm energy within the game. The music and SFX are very simple, but they do the job very well. 8/10

Story/Originality- Splish Splash Pong doesn’t have a story, but the way Happymagenta remixed the original game of Pong makes for an interesting pick-up-and-play gaming experience. I’ll rate the originality as a 7/10

General Gameplay- Splish Splash Pong in itself has very simple and very limited gameplay, which lowers the rating in this category by a large amount. While this category isn’t Splish Splash Pong’s strong suit, I believe other categories make up for it. General gameplay receives a 7/10

Addictiveness– Splish Splash Pong is crazy addictive; once you pick it up, it’s hard to set it back down. I was initially unimpressed with Splish Splash Pong, but once I played the game for long enough, it sunk its hooks deep into me. I am an addict. Addictiveness scores a 10/10.

I believe Splish Splash Pong deserves an overall rating of 8/10.
