We are not alone!! NASA haven’t been able to discover the aliens yet but guess what, this game does. Mankind’s greatest fear comes alive and you are the chosen one to save this world by kicking the aliens out from our atmosphere. Aliens Drive Me Crazy is developed by Rebel twins and it is available to for iOS and android. We already took a look at their Daddy was a Thief, and were impressed by everything except the repetitive gameplay. Let us see if Aliens Drive Me Crazy tries to make up for that or makes the same mistake. Although, it doesn’t look like one but it is another endless game. I have to give credit to developers here because they have been trying to change the definition of endless again and again. Previously, with Daddy was a Thief, they tried to break the stereotype by making a game which runs down a building trying to escape rather than looping around the world on a road, and now once again they brought something out of convection. The game is endless but not repetitive and to know how they achieved it, you have to go through this review.
The intro video explains more than half of the game’s story but it doesn’t even give a hint about the gameplay. This game is about an angry man, who gets tired from alien invasion. Aliens before invading with their army, kidnaped few mobs and took their outlook. As the aliens are impersonating as mods, so every mob around the world is an alien. This barbarian, our hero, is the one who took the responsibility to rescue citizens captured by aliens and destroy alien transmitters around the world to stop this invasion. The world is divided into divisions, unlimited divisions, you can also consider these divisions as stages or missions. You will guide hero through each and every one of them using cars, guns, explosives and more stuff to rescue citizens and save the world.
The game begins asking for access to Google Play Games. Google Play Games saves the game data online so that it can be used on different devices and if the game support leaderboards, which this one does, you can compare your score and rank with your friends and rest of the players on Play Games. Google Play Games also gives you access to access to twenty five different achievements, waiting for you to challenge and unlock them. Completing every achievement will give you a raise of 500 experience points. These achievements starts off with easy tasks which includes the likes of destroying first transmitter or killing two aliens to difficult ones like completing one district without destroying any TNT barrel.
Right after that login access screen you will be facing the dashboard. Once again Rebel twins gave us beautiful graphical representation and it looks like that it is built upon the same engine as Daddy was a Thief. The dashboard animations are smooth as they can be. The colors are decently saturated and artwork is overall a joy to watch.
In the dashboard you will have options to start the game, change the settings, visit leaderboard and purchase things from shop. There is hardly any endless game without a shop but the thing which matters is the content of the shop. The previous game from the developer hardly surprised us here because the purchasable items were a mixture of subway surfers and jet pack joy ride but Aliens Drive Me Crazy stands alone in this regard and features unique items.
There are five different sections of the shop namely character, weapons, cars, utilities and get coins. In the character section there are nine different characters available. Out of nine characters the first is the one which you will use initially. Rest eight are new, out of which six are available for you to purchase initially, price starts at in-game 2,000 coin and the last two will unlock after district 50 and 100 respectively. New characters don’t have any new power or specialty, the only difference lies in the look.
The next section is Weapons. There are seven different weapons available to choose from. The variety ranges from simple gun which will take several shots to kill till laser ones which can swipe whole floor at once. Price of weapons starts from 500 coins, every weapon have 5 upgrade levels, price of which too increases as you go up the line. First four weapons are available to purchase while the last three will be after destroying aliens’ base camps of district 9, 100 and 150 respectively.
The third section is dedicated to cars, which our hero needs as he makes his way through alien occupied districts. There are six different vehicles available. Our barbarian hero owns the first one which is yellow bee. The tagline of this car reminds of bumble bee from transformers, no doubt the color is yellow too. Vehicle price starts from in-game 20,000 coins, every vehicle has its own advantage, ranging from a normal car to huge muscular tanks. While you can purchase the next two cars, you have to unlock the last three starting at district 20 till 150.
The second last section is called Utilities. There are nine different products available inthis section which are Extra Life, Revive, Bulletproof Vest, Air Strike, Nitro, Four Leaf Clover, Coin Doubler and two unknown unlockables.
Extra Life increases the health of the character. Initially our hero has just one life bar but it can be increased to seven by purchasing extra life. It starts at 500 coins, has five upgrades levels and each level adds one extra life bar. Revive revives our hero and gives him another chance to save the world. It can be used once and is available for 2000 coins.
Bulletproof Vest is available for 2000 coins and reduces the injury risk by half. Air Strike is available for 500 coins, it can be used only once before you have to purchase it again. It strikes down all aliens visible on your screen once during gameplay. Nitro too can be used once, it gives your car a speed boost which you can use to get rid of robotic dinosaur or climb steep hills and it is available for 1000 coins. Buying Four Leaf Clover will increase the frequency of ammo refills which appears during base fights. Coin Doubler will increase the effective value of coins by a factor of 2 but you have to pay real time currency for it which is 2.99$.
The last section is called ‘Get coins’ and it is related to IAP (in app purchases). Here you can trade your actual currency with game coins. There are three coin packs, small one will get you 20,000 coins for 1.99$, large one will charge you 4.99$ and gives 50,000 coins in return, while Mega pack will try to create a hole in your pocket as it gives, no doubt, 500,000 coins but for 19.99$.
The settings menu allows you to change game’s language, toggle sound settings, erase data, rate this app on play store and check other games made by the developer. Latest version of Aliens Drive Me Crazy is 2.0.7 and works on both phones and tablets. Android users needs to have at least android gingerbread (2.3) on their devices and iOS users requires at least iOS 6.0. Hence this game can be played on almost every device.
Now it’s time to save the world. The gameplay of every district is divided into two parts. The first part involves driving towards the aliens’ base camp, the second part involves making your way to the top of the building to destroy transmitter. In first part, our hero uses his yellow bee to hammer his way through alien occupied houses, killing aliens which are impersonating as mobs, destroying furniture and whatever comes in his way. There are coins which you can collect, killing aliens and destroying things will also give you coins and you’ll need them to buy upgrades. There are different mobs, there are the ones who will shoot at you, there are few who uses flamethrower, and also the one who uses rockets to make sure you don’t stop their invasion. That’s not all, the mobs will come at you in different cars, few of them in simple cars but as you processed to higher level there will be the cars with spikes on their front bumper. UFOs and huge trucks will try to slow you down, if your speed decreases there is a gigantic robotic dinosaur controlled by aliens waiting to eat you and no matter how much health you might have, you’ll be dead. You cannot kill this dinosaur but others can be killed. To kill enemies you have to crush them under your car.
The car is auto accelerating, you can swipe across the screen in all four directions. Swiping up will jump the car, swiping down will smash the car downwards, swiping towards right will toggle nitro booster and swiping backwards will move the car in reverse direction for a bit before it starts to go forward again.
As you reach aliens’ base camp our barbarian dude will jump out of his car, holding a crossbow in his hands. Now you have to help our hero to get on top of the building so that he can rescue citizens, which gives coins, and destroy aliens transmitter. On your way you will again encounter mobs, the same ones as you did before. The addition here is helicopters which will fire rockets at you. To get on the top floor you will require a key, and one of the mobs will be holding it. You have to kill that mob to get the key. Character shoots automatically at enemies. After every 9 districts, in the 10th you will face a boss UFO having multiple health, it will also be assisted by other helicopters. You will also find ammunition so that your guns doesn’t run out of bullets. The controls in base camp resembles to those of Daddy was a Thief, our hero moves continuously and changes his direction only after facing a blockade. You will either swipe up or down to change the floor. Once the transmitter is destroyed, building collapses, barbarian uses a parachute to reach his car from the top.

The developers did change the definition of endless and showed us how it can be varied. Game doesn’t get repetitive, even the geometry of world for the same district is different as it is randomly generated. The two parts of gameplay are completely coherent and one feels empty without the other. Difficulty gradient is steep, killing different mobs, saving yourself from robotic dinosaur coupled with low health sometimes becomes more than you asked for. How many endless games you have encountered with boss fights? None!! Did I mention that flame thrown by aliens can burn down their other aliens? Controls are not perfect but still they are good enough. Game play isn’t without its bad moments, but these moments are small. The controls in the driving segment doesn’t feel weak but user lacks character control during the base camp part. There are few places from where vehicles, even jeep, cannot pass once you are stuck at these. The developer tries hard to push the user towards in app purchases because gathering coins are difficult.
I have to admit that developer Rebel Twins, had done a fabulous job with game’s graphics. The artwork of Aliens Drive Me Crazy does takes its root from Daddy was a Thief and grows even better. The menu’s transitional animations are extremely fluid. The game looks cartoony. The characters are brilliantly designed and detailed, even the expressions of the characters changes at different scenarios, do notice the face our barbarian makes as he shoots down mobs at base camp. It is more like that you are watching a cartoon movie. With slow-motion blasts, the armory, huge robotic dinosaur, and aliens all these things makes sure that you get a nice in-game experience.
Again following the footsteps of previous games made by the developer, this game too gives too much good sound effects for a free game. The sound effects are of cine level. Instead of using your mobile’s speakers just plug in a good pair of headphones and enjoy the craziness. You will feel the dinosaur chasing you down as the intensity of its footstep increases. Car’s sound changes as it accelerate. Background music is impressive and believe me you will not get bore from it.
General Gameplay: Aliens Drive Me Crazy gets deserving 7.5/10 here. The gameplay is smooth, although the difficulty level rises quickly. There’s no endless game which is like this. Divisions of the districts and introduction of boss fights is a nice touch.
Game’s Artwork: I’ll give this game 8/10 here. The cartoonish look coupled with brilliantly saturated colors makes this game overall eye pleasing.
Music and SFX: I’ll give Aliens Drive Me Crazy 8/10 for the quality that it gives in sound. The music and sound effects are superb adds good experience to the gameplay, doesn’t get repetitive which is the most common issue out there with other games.
Storyline: I’ll give this game 7/10 in this section. The storyline of alien invasion and man saves the planet is just another overused of the shelf story but the execution of it is something they deserves award for. Although, there is not background information about our hero, but who want to know when whole world is in danger!
Addictiveness: Aliens Drive Me Crazy scores 7/10 here. One word ‘improvement!!!’. Previously, Rebel Twins struggled badly in this section. Daddy was a Thief was a good game but it wasn’t something you will want to play again after few tries but this game makes sure that you open it up every time you are free or getting bored. Gameplay will never let you down, even if it does the artwork and sound effects will make sure that you don’t leave the game. There are loads of unlockables to attract you and the best thing is that if you die you don’t have to start from the scratch, something which I always wanted in rest of the endless games.
Overall I’ll give Aliens Drive Me Crazy 7.5/10. The developers did leave a long lasting mark with this game. It is a beautiful mixture of all the ingredients required to make a memorable game. If developers can make few changes using an update allowing us to use weapons on car and increase the frequency of coin, they will make the users extremely happy. More games like these and Rebel Twins will be on my list of ‘Top-developers’.
