When you have collected enough experience points, you will level up, after which you will receive four skill points. You can use the skill points on three attributes. Health, Attack and Defense. If you spend points on Health, your maximum health points will increase, which allows you to commit harder crimes without failing. Spending skill points on Attack and Defense will make your attacks more powerful and will decrease the amount of damage you receive. If you do not know on which attribute you should spend your skill points on, you can tap on the auto button and the game will do it automatically for you.

Every action that you take in Gangstar City will cost you energy bolts. You have a total of one hundred energy bolts when you first start playing the game, but this amount will increase when you level up. Your energy bar will also refill itself over time, or you can use premium diamonds to refill it right away. Leveling up will also refill your energy bar right away. The price for cash starts at $1,99 for the smallest amount of 10.000 cash and goes up till $39,99 for the largest amount of 300.000 cash. The price for diamonds start at $1,99 for the smallest amount of 10 diamonds and runs up till $39,99 for the largest amount of 300 diamonds.

If you do not want to spend any money on Gangstar City, you can also earn free in-game cash by completing offers or watching advertisement videos. Spending diamonds on these things is pretty silly and will be a waste in the long run.

A wise thing to do is investing in-game cash on properties around your crib. You can construct different types of businesses around your crib, which might seem silly for a criminal to do, but it is really not. After you spend money and constructed the buildings, you can then spend more in-game cash to upgrade them and make them more profitable. After a certain amount of time, you can tap on the dollar sign on top of your businesses and collect your money. This continues on forever, so the more property you have, the more money you will make. In late-game, you can earn thousands of in-game cash for each business you own.

If you are in dire need of some in-game cash, you can always earn them for free by completing offers and watching advertisement videos. Offers usually reward you with thousands of in-game cash, depending on how complicated the task is. I like the fact that Gangstar City starts off with a small tutorial, showing you how to play the game, how to control your character, how to commit crimes and how to construct buildings. There is also a story, which is always nice to have in a game. After the tutorial ends, you will be on your own and the game will become pretty straightforward. You need to commit crimes, invest in businesses and become the richest criminal ever. A very positive aspect is the fact that there are a ton of things to do in the game itself. You can rob people, blackmail people, rob businesses and you can even establish your own businesses to make more money. It is nice to see that there are still developers out there that implement a lot of features in their games, so that it will remain entertaining and fun to play. If you enjoy challenges and you like simulator games, then Gangstar City is just the game for you.

Unfortunately, there are also several negative aspects about Gangstar City. For starters, players get a limited amount of playtime because of the fact that the developers implemented an energy system into the game. You have a total of one hundred energy bolts, which do increase when you level up, but every action costs several energy bolts. When you run out of energy bolts, you either need to wait a while for them to regenerate, or you need to use diamonds to regenerate them instantly. This means that you either have to be patient and wait for your energy bolts to regenerate automatically, or spend money in order to be able to play the game.

Same problem goes for constructing buildings. Constructing different types of buildings around your crib will take a long time, but you can of course spend diamonds to instantly construct them. Diamonds are the premium currency of Gangstar City, and are almost impossible to obtain by playing the game. This is a classic freemium game, where the game is developed in such a way, that you have to spend real money in order to enjoy it fully.

The second negative aspect about Gangstar City is the fact that there are several advertisements, and although they are not so obstructive, they can still get in the way of the your playing field. The advertisements come in the form of banners but also pop-ups. Having advertisements in free-to-play games is understandable, but the developers should implement them in such a way, that it will not obstruct or annoy players and turn them off from the game.

Artwork: I give Gangstar City an 8/10 for its artwork. Gangstar City has two world maps, the first one is the city of Santa Monica and the second one is where your house is located. Santa Monica is a large city with lots of businesses and people walking around, while the surroundings of your house are very empty and dull. The graphics in Gangstar City can be considered pretty decent, especially for a mobile game. All the objects and characters in the game are pretty detailed and you could tell from far away what every object stands for. It is really nice to see that you can fill up the world map around your house with new businesses and place everything wherever you want. I really like the fact that the city feels alive because of the fact that every character has animations, you see cars driving around, you see people talking and even people committing crimes.

Music & SFX: I give Gangstar City a 7/10 for its music and SFX. The soundtracks used in Gangstar City fits the criminal scene of the game pretty well. Unfortunately there are not many different soundtracks playing in the background, which could lead to players getting bored and bothered by listening to the same music over and over again. Gangstar City does feature a lot of different sound effects, such as when you are robbing a store or when you are in a gunfight with a rival gang member. The sound effects really reinforces the criminal aspect of this game, and the developers did a good job designing both the soundtracks and the sound effects.

Story & Originality: I give Gangstar City a 7/10 for its story and originality. Criminal simulations have been on the rise, and there are many games such as Gangstar City out on the app stores. This doesn’t mean that the game is not original, because Gangstar City has a lot of features which you won’t see in other criminal simulation games. For starters, the gameplay starts with a tutorial, which also tells the story behind the game. This gives the players more creativity and more feeling for the characters in the game. There is also an upgrade and customization option which lets you build up your own businesses and upgrade them.

General Gameplay: I give Gangstar City a 7/10 for general gameplay. There is a small tutorial at the beginning of the gameplay, which shows you the basics of the game and teaches you how to properly play the game. After the tutorial ends, the gameplay becomes pretty straightforward, but still fun to play. The controls are smooth and responsive and the user interface is clear. There are still some bugs in the game, which the developers should fix to make the gameplay even more entertaining.

Addictiveness: I give Gangstar City a 6/10 for addictiveness. I really dislike it when developers implement limitations into a game, and make players wait before they can continue playing. Many developers do this so that players who are impatient, are forced to pay real money in order to be able to continue playing the game. This really brings down the addictiveness of Gangstar City because of the fact that many people simply do not want to spend any money on a free-to-play game, or cannot afford to. It is understandable that the developers want to earn some money for developing this game, but they should find different ways in doing so.

All things considered, I give Gangstar City a 7/10.
