Powerboat Racing 3D Review

Powerboat Racing 3D does a great job at providing an immersive experience – when advertisements are not an issue, like they usually are. I felt as if I was actually racing in one of these powerboats, not just as if I was a user of a smartphone trying to waste some of my spare time. Everything felt great, and combined with the sound effects, I managed to become a part of the game – it was extremely gripping and very enjoyable.

I think that the user interfaces within Powerboat Racing 3D are alright, but they are certainly not the best – nor are they perfect. The buttons are responsive, so that is a great bonus, but they do not look to appealing. I think that the developers of Powerboat Racing 3D have tried too hard to make the buttons look futuristic, and the outcome is not that pleasant. The buttons look very messy, as do the menus – I think their choice of font contributes to this point that they do not look very nice. Nothing fits together very well, and it all looks out of place compared to the graphics. The buttons are far too big and look a little humiliating – they should be smaller, for sure! Other than this, they are responsive and they do the job okay.

I think the graphics are nice within Powerboat Racing 3D. They look very realistic, but not to the point where I cannot tell the difference between the game and reality. It is very nice, and they are extremely aesthetically pleasing – I love it! There is a perfect mix of realism and a tiny bit of cartoon style, which is perfect for this style and genre of game. I can tell that a lot of hard work and dedication has been put towards these graphics, and it has paid off very well. I can see that everything has been designed in sync with the rest of the designs (besides user interfaces), and this is also extremely aesthetically pleasing. This adds to the immersive experience which I previously spoke of, and it helped me become a part of the game.

I feel is any age of person, as long as they have basic mobile device knowledge, should be able to enjoy this game – more so if advertisements were removed.

I am not pleased with the amount of third party advertisements included within Powerboat Racing 3D. They were far too frequent, awfully distracting, and of a great annoyance. All I wanted was to be able to get into the gameplay and enjoy myself, but for the majority of the time I was distracted by flashing advertisements at sides of the screen. They should be removed completely to make the game more immersive and enjoyable. In addition to this, I do not think that paying to remove advertisements is appropriate for this game.

Ratings

Artwork: I am able to give Powerboat Racing 3D a strong and well deserved 9/10 for their artwork. It is a great strong point for the game, and I had no issues with it throughout the whole of the gameplay. I think that it is appealing to a very wide range of ages, including youngsters, teenagers, adults and even the elderly alike. I believe that artwork is one of the most important aspects of a mobile game, and I can tell that the developers of Powerboat Racing 3D have not slacked on it – they have almost mastered it. My only suggestion here is to change the design of the buttons and possibly even the chosen font. Other than that, the artwork is perfect.

Music & SFX: I can give Powerboat Racing 3D a 7/10 for their music and sound effects. The music is brilliant, although a little generic, and fits in perfectly with the scenery and setting of this game. Although the music is still fairly generic sounding, it does build a fair level of suspense to the user when they are getting ready to race, or when they are already half way through a race. It is great, and I think that it is appealing to a wide range of age ranges, too! The sound effects are also good, and they add a great emphasis to the racing. Every time the water splashes, it sounds very realistic – this is the same with crashes and other powerboat sounds. I am pleased that there is variation with the sound effects, and they are not too repetitive. With most games, I would hear the same sound repeated time after time again – with Powerboat Racing 3D, this is not the case, everything sounds fresh and new with every game.

Story & Originality: I am only able to give Powerboat Racing 3D a 2/10 for its story and originality. There is virtually no story line throughout the whole of the game – I have no idea who my character is, and why it is determined to race powerboats. Most importantly, the game does not give me a reason to play. Also, this type of game has been created many of times before, and it is not really anything new and/or exciting. The multiplayer functionality does make the game more unique, however – as are the graphics. If there was not this unique point, I would not be able to give Powerboat Racing 3D anything above a zero.

General Gameplay: I am able to give Powerboat Racing 3D a strong 8/10 for general gameplay. This is another strong point of the game – it is extremely fun, mainly because of how the game provides an immersive experience. Everything is fairly smooth and responsive, so this makes the game much more enjoyable to play than some of the competitor apps. Since there is no storyline, or even a introductory cutscene, I cannot give the full ten – I have no reason to play other than to waste some spare time. Also, the advertisements are extremely distracting, and this takes away from the gameplay greatly.

Addictiveness: I can only give Powerboat Racing a 5/10 for addictiveness. Everything is fairly repetitive, even though there are several different courses. Also, like I have previously said – there is no storyline so I feel I have no reason to play. However, when I do have spare time that needs killing, I will often turn to Powerboat Racing 3D. That is basically the limit – I do not find myself going out of my way to play, and I often get bored after just a few levels. Mainly because of the advertisements. I feel that if there were no advertisements, I could easily have given Powerboat Racing 3D a seven instead of a five out of ten for this department.

Overall, I give Powerboat Racing 3D a 7/10.
