Shipwrecked: Volcano Island is a mobile application, which is currently available for most smartphones and tablets that are running Google’s Android operating system or Apple’s iOS operating system. Since its release on June 17th of 2015, Shipwrecked: Volcano Island has achieved well over one million installs on Android devices alone – not including installs on devices which are running Apple’s iOS operating system! The game is known as a ‘freemium’ application, for both Android and iOS – this means that the app is entirely free to download and play, however it does feature a few select in app purchases. Every single in app purchase is absoloutely optional, and the user does not need to purchase them at all – the game is fully playable without the additional purchases. These purchases are only there incase the user ever feels the need to increase their levels of ingame currency or a quick upgrade. Any in app purchases completed by the user will cost them real life currency in return for the in game upgrade.
The aim of Shipwrecked: Volcano is purely to grow and expand the area which is owned and managed by the user, whilst earning as much in game currency as they possibly can at the same time.
Users need to be prepared to become a super brave adventurer, while their treasure and pirates awaits them. Users of Shipwrecked: Volcano Island can explore uncharted island areas which has never been seen before, discover hidden secrets and build an extremely stunning and asthetically pleasing island colony beneath the periodically active volcano. This is not all the user can do, however – there are plenty more thing that users of Shipwrecked: Volcano Island are able to do to pass time and earn in game income. They are able to explore the jungle – if they dare – and explore the previously unknown territory, unlock lost cargo from the beach in a search of secret treasures, turn the sanctuary into a greatly thriving colony which is safe from the volcano. Whilst doing all of this, the user must be sure to avoid any dangerous and fatal lava! Users of Shipwrecked: Volcano Island are able to watch their area on the Volcano Island become a beautiful realm of paradise that would have otherwise been nothing without the help of the user.
If you feel like joining the millions of other adventurers who are taking a majour adventure through the previously unknown areas of the Volcano Island, then this is most certainly the game for you! There are a wide range of activities for the user to chose from if they become a little bit bored of the norm, so the chances are, the user will never find themselves bored of gameplay. Whilst doing all of this, users will be able to appreciate the fact that they have been helping lots of non-playing characters, known as NPCs, to find a great settlement.
Getting started within Shipwrecked: Volcano Island is extremely simple, and very straightfoward. All the user has to do is wait a short while for a loading game to pass, and then the user is able to get stuck straight in with the gameplay. Then first thing the user must do is complete a short and basic tutorial, which includes chopping trees, harvesting crops, building new structures, as well as much more. The whole of the tutorial is very easy to understand, and the user should find themselves being guided through the game in the form of dialogue and speech boxes. As well as completing a tutorial, users will find that they have also leveled up to level two within moments – which is a great sight for new users. After completing the tutorial, the user is free to play as they wish! However, there are always missions along the side of the screen which gives the user an idea as to what to do if they are feeling a little bit confused or lost within Shipwrecked: Volcano Island.
While Shipwrecked: Volcano Island is an exciting game to play, it requires you to have a lot of gold, silver, and spirit to get the items and upgrades you need in the game. Cash and gold can be purchased through the app store, but it costs real money, and a lot of people cannot afford to keep making these purchases. Although this is not so much of a cheat, more of a tip, there is a general rule of thumb which stands for most games that involve growing and expanding in the form of structures and buildings – and this is no different for Shipwrecked: Volcano Island. Users of Shipwrecked: Volcano Island can follow this small tip to maximise their profit in the long run. Instead of purchasing smaller structures as they become available, users should save their money for as long as they can stand. From there, they should purchase a bigger and more expensive money making structure. The users of Shipwrecked: Volcano Island should also make sure that they do not buy any structures for decorative purpose – these are fairly useless and will not generate any income at all.
Other than this, there is no other way of cheating within Shipwrecked: Volcano Island. There is also no way of manipulating or ‘hacking’ the game files in order to create changes ingame. The amount of in game currency that the user can own is all dependant on their playing style, since there are no cheats.
Shipwrecked: Volcano Island does not really provide an immersive experience, that the title of the game otherwise suggests to me. The word ‘Shipwrecked’ tells me that there is going to be a lot of action taking place in the game, and it is going to be fast paced – in reality, this is completely incorrect. There is virtually no fast paced action, and this makes me feel more like a user trying to waste some time – instead I should be feeling like I am a part of the game, as if I am an actual character. It is unfortunate that this is the case – even in the most fun parts of the game, they were not at all immersive. The game is certainly still fun, however it just did not give me a feeling that many other games are able to provide. If the game was a little more fast paced, with more action, then the game would certainly be more enjoyable and immersive, simultaneously.
All of the user interfaces within Shipwrecked: Volcano Island are extremely nice, and I feel as if they have been designed pretty much perfectly. There are virtually no buttons that are too small and fiddly to access, whilst at the same time there were no buttons that were too big that they looked extremely odd or out of place. Every buttin is very easy to press – I had no issues with pressing the wrong button by mistake. I am pleased how nothing seems to cramped or crowded onto the mobile device screen, The developers of Shipwrecked: Volcano Island have kept everything asthetically pleasing, too – everything was of a consistent size and everything all looked fairly similar. All of the user interfaces are very easy to use and navigate, as well – scrolling was very pleasing, since it was smooth and responsive and shown no lag or stuttering. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the user interfaces that are provided by Shipwrecked: Volcano Island.
I most certainly enjoy the graphics within Shipwrecked: Volcano Island, and they are asthetically pleasing, but I think that they do look a little more childish than anything else. This leads me to believe that the game is pretty much for children only, or atleast orientated towards children. However, the gameplay is telling me the exact opposite. When playing, I feel as if it can be enjoyed by many people of all different ages – but the graphics are extremely off-putting. The graphics look like they were designed purely with children in mind, and it make the game look like it is nothing more but a game for children and young teenagers – but in reality, it isn’t since the gameplay could be enjoyed by a variety of ages. I am not saying that they are extremely childish, and they certainly still look very nice and pleasing, but they are just different from what I would be expecting for this style and genre of game. I appreciate the effort put in by the developers – but seriously, they put me off playing an awful lot. I would love to see this change some time soon, since I believe the game would then be able to be enjoyed by many other age ranges than it can at the moment.
I was very pleased to see that the amount of third party adverisements were kept to a minimum within this game – by not including them at all! There were no advertisements throughout the whole of the gameplay, whatsoever – which is lovely and can certainly be appreciated by me and other mobile gamers alike. I am extremely pleased that the developers of Shipwrecked: Volcano Island have not included advertisements at all – it is lovely, since I am not being distracted from the gameplay by some annoying popups and flashing banners that competition applications may otherwise be doing. This is a great move on the developers half, and I am extremely pleased with what they have done here!
As I have mentioned earlier, the aim of the game is to expand and grow with the use of stuctures and buildings. Even thougn things do become a little repetitive after some time, the developers opf Shipwrecked: Volcano Island have managed to keep these tasks feeling new, fresh and they do not become boring or stale. Even though the tasks are being repeated over and over again, such as collecting in game currency from buildings, things are able to seem new. I think this is because the missions usually give a slightly different story before making the user complete a task – so this is a great move by the developers, and something that I (and surely, others) can really appreciate.
Artwork: As much as it may seem like it deserves more, I am only able to give Shipwrecked: Volcano Island a 5/10 for the artwork. I can most certainly tell that a lot of hard work and effort has been dedicated to this game, they still take away from the general gameplay aspect of things just a little bit. I can sometimes find myself in a great part of the game, but because the artwork seems childish it takes away from the great feeling that the game would have otherwise been providing. They certainly look nice, but they are too childish and it needs improvement – I can see these graphics making adults and members of the elderly not want to play as much as they should be.
Music & SFX: I give Shipwrecked: Volcano Island a 6/10 for their work with music and sound effects. The sound effects are pretty much perfect, however they are so repetitive that they eventually become a little bit stale and boring. For example, if I am collecting cash from my buildings, then I will be presented with the same sound effect over and over again – which certainly does become a bit aggrovating to say the least. There needs to be more sound effects for the same action, which would provide a little more variation for the same tasks. At the moment it is very draining and boring. This most certainly needs some improvement, since it makes me want to stop playing since I am just bombarded with the same sounds. The muic is nice, but it still feels a little bit repetitive. The music from Shipwrecked: Volcano Island also sounds a little bit childish which matches with the artwork. I am not expecting some extremely hardcore music, as that would not be appropriate, but the music needs to be less mild and less soft since it sounds like something I would hear from a baby’s toy or interactive book. As much as it is childish, and repetitive, it is still enjoyable. Both the music and the sound effects still need some work to make them one hundred percent perfect. As of now, they are far from perfect.
Story & Originality: I am only able to give Shipwrecked: Volcano Island a 2/10 for their story and originality. This is for a few reasons. There is virtually no story line throughout the whole of the game, besides the very mild sentences found within some of the missions and tasks and a tiny bit of speech from a few of the characters. There is virtually nothing else to tell the user why they are there, what they are doing – nothing is explained, and it is a little bit confusing. Without the storyline, I wonder why I am actually playing, since I know nothing about who I am in the game. I am pleased to see that my characters have names, though. I would have liked to have known exactly who I am and why I am completing the tasks for me to enjoy it thoroughly. In addition to the game having no storyline, this type of game has eeen created countless times – I could find hundreds of games like this, so it is really nothing new! There is only a very basic twist on things, like the use of missions (which is still nothing entirely new). This is slightly forgiveable, though, since the game has been professionaly developed unlike a lot of competitor games and apps.
General Gameplay: I am able to give Shipwrecked: Volcano Island a 7/10 for general gameplay. Even though the game does not provide that immersive experience that I was expecting, even in the best parts of the game, I still found the game enjoyable. There were some great features that made the game enjoyable – I think the user interfaces added to this, too. I am not able to give the full ten since the sounds and music are repetitive, and the artwork is not of a high standard like I would be expecting. If there were better graphics, and the sounds were improved, I would easily be able to give this department a full ten. As of now, the game is seems too child orientated.
Addictiveness: For this, I am easily able to give Shipwrecked: Volcano Island a 7/10 for addictivess. I think that the game is definitely addictive, simply because of the way that the user earns in game currency. For me to know that I have to have the app open to be earning, then I am more than likely going to have the app open. However, because of the music and artwork – I cannot give the full ten. If the game was able to be more friendly towards a wide range of ages, I would easily be able to give the full ten here. As long as the art style and sounds are not bothering me, which they usually are, I am able to find myself playing for extremely long periods of time. Since there are no cheats for earning money, and the only way to earn is via playing, it makes me want to play simply to earn money!
Overall, I give Shipwrecked: Volcano Island a 7/10.
