The N.O.V.A (Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance) series has been setting the bar for mobile graphics going on six years by now, and developers Gameloft have perfected the award winning space shooter FPS formula with N.O.V.A 3.
Now free thanks to the release of N.O.V.A 3 Freedom Edition, N.O.V.A 3 is a first person sci-fi action shooter that follows Commander Kal Wardin as he crash lands in future San Francisco after receiving a distress signal, and soon finds himself battling alongside Near Orbital Vanguard Alliance troops to fight back against a swarm of Volterites, an alien species hell bent on stealing the artifact needed to make Earth habitable again for the human race. Using a range of weapons including standard issue handguns and assault rifles, shotguns, alien guns that shoot lightning, plasma guns, mines and grenades, the player controls Commander Wardin fighting through ten fully immersive levels each with their own unique art style, going from slugging it out through city streets to crazy alien environments from out of this world.
N.O.V.AS 3 is controlled through an on screen joystick for movement on the left of the screen, and swiping your thumb on the right to make Commander Wardin look up and down or turn left and right. There are also dedicated buttons for shooting, running (keep in mind you can’t shoot while running), jumping, and zooming into iron sights, as well as an ammo clip where you can keep track of your clip and swipe left or right to change the current equipped weapon.
After enjoying the fleshed out single player campaign mode, you can jump straight into the multiplayer action online or over wi-fi on seven different maps with seven classic multiplayer modes: Free-for-All, Team Deathmatch, Freeze Tag, Capture the Flag, Capture the Point, IstaGib and Team InstaGib.
Play games, enter tournaments and earn experience points to level up your player profile which can be linked to any Gameloft Live account. Add in game friends, view stats and check your game history, or head to the Armory where you can customize character your character with perks (faster shield regeneration, speed, bonus damage) skins, preset loud-outs (primary and secondary guns, perks and items slots), kill signatures (a message that appears when you kill other players) and killchain bonuses (like make enemies visible on the radar or become invincible for a short period of time).
For sci-fi shooter action with a fully orchestral soundtrack, N.O.V.A 3 Freedom Edition is the way to go for iOS, Android, Windows Phone and Blackberry devices.

Keep an eye on that reload meter in the top right of your screen. Running out of ammo at the wrong time is a recipe for disaster, so make sure you reload whenever the Volterite hoard gives you some breathing room.
When playing one of the many multiplayer modes, remember that you’re playing real people. Don’t just stand in front of them and shoot, giving them a clear shot at you. Strafing around a target in a circle is the tried and true formula for victory in first person shooters.
You automatically switch to a new weapon when you pick it up off the ground, and the animation takes a long time. Walking over a weapon in the middle of a battle leaves you defenceless for a few seconds, so keep that in mind before trying to grab that extra assault rifle.
Good first person shooters on mobile phones come few and far between, but gamer’s patience has been rewarded this time with the third instalment of N.O.V.A. Not only is N.O.V.A 3 one of the best shooter experiences I’ve had, the game has to be one of, if not the best looking game out there on mobiles or tablets, and honestly rivals a few downloadable games on the online console stores. And it’s completely free! Each level is colorful and bright with high resolution textures and advanced lighting effects, which can probably be attributed to Gameloft’s amazing in house engine.
As you can imagine for the third game in a popular series, N.O.V.A 3 has a great story mode with plot twists and turns, and lets you interact with some amazing looking sceneries. I don’t want to give away too much of the plot, but I know that fans of the series will welcome Commander Kal Wardin back after the uplifting ending of N.O.V.A 2.
The single player campaign mode is an action packed six to eight hour journey, and even though I’d recommend playing it, it’s not what really matters here. In my opinion, it’s the extremely competitive multiplayer mode that really shines. Not only does it provide a stripped back arcade like shooter that favours only the better skilled, being able to customise your kill signature, skin and weapon loud outs, and interact through voice chat with other players online means that N.O.V.A 3 really is the complete package in what you want to find in a multiplayer mobile shooter. The multiplayer mode has enough content in it to have you playing for hours, not to mention the tough as nails achievements.
N.O.V.A 3 Freedom Edition is geared towards the more hardcore gamers out there, who will love the competitive multiplayer competitive, but I know that even the most casual of gamers would be able to enjoy the crips visuals and core gameplay that this wonderful game has to offer.
Artwork: I give N.O.V.A 3 Freedom Edition a 7 out of 10 for Artwork. N.O.V.A 3 is obviously proud of it’s graphics, and flaunts it with in engine cutscenes that look better than most other games with pre rendered movies. The N.O.V.A series has always pushed the visual performance you can get from mobile devices, and N.O.V.A 3 is no exception to that rule.
Music and SFX: I give N.O.V.A 3 Freedom Edition a 9 out of 10 for Music and SFX. N.O.V.A 3 is full of impressive action sound effects like explosions, blood splatter and bullet shells hitting the floor. The orchestral background music and musical cues played throughout the campaign are top notch too.
Story and Originality: I give N.O.V.A 3 Freedom Edition a 9 out of 10 for Story and Originality. As the third in the series, N.O.V.A 3 continues with the strong story of the previous iterations and builds on it, introducing new environments and characters from alien worlds.
General Gameplay: I give N.O.V.A 3 Freedom Edition a 10 out of 10 for General Gameplay. This is the real deal, a first person shooter on mobiles that can finally stand up to big shooters such as the Halo and Call of Duty series.
Addictiveness: I give N.O.V.A 3 Freedom Edition an 8 out of 10 for Addictiveness. Although the single player is crushingly short, the many multiplayer modes can entertain even the most dedicated of gamers for hours on end.
Overall, I give N.O.V.A 3 Freedom Edition a 9 out of 10.
