Super Penguins is an endless runner game by Supersolid, the developer who has brought players Adventure Town and Pororo Penguin Run, both of which were moderately successful games, but no doubt Super Penguins takes the cake among them.
Super Penguins is currently rated 4.3/5 stars on the Google Play Store and 4.5/5 stars on the Apple App Store, with millions of downloads each. Let’s find out if these ratings are well deserved and if the game is as addicting as it suggests!

The game starts up with telling us a story of the penguins involved. As penguins usually do, they love fish very much, but eating it peacefully is not an option, because a huge and evil octopus has taken away all of it. The octopus doesn’t stop at that, it even abducts most of the penguins and you are the one who has to rescue them.
In Super Penguins, before you start your current run, you have to choose which penguin character you want to control. There are many choices to be made. Do you want to use the basic blue penguin, the pink girl penguin or maybe the red penguin? Do you maybe want something more silly and want to play a pirate, a cat, a platypus or a robot penguin? You can choose all that and even more. Most of these characters are unlocked by spending fish, while some are unlocked by doing various tasks, like buying a pack of fish with real money, which comes with the pirate penguin.

You can also outfit your characters with various hats, like vikings helms, snowman heads, milk pans and other silly items. Each character has different items to equip and all of these cost fish.

Now, after you are done with choosing and outfitting your penguin, you can press OK, which puts you right into the main part of the game, the run itself. You move your penguin to the left or right by tilting your phone to either side, while jumping is done by tapping on the screen. Like in most endless runners, you can’t stop your penguin, it keeps running on it’s own until you hit an obstacle.

Super Penguins’ roads are mostly snowy and icy. Your penguin will keep running on snow, but when you reach an icy part, it will jump on it’s belly and slide on the ice, while also increasing in speed. The speed also gets faster and faster the further you get in your run, so if you reach 2500 meters, you will be running with at least double the speed that you started on. This not only means that you will get further in a shorter time, but also that avoiding obstacles will be much harder and you will need keen reflexes.

What kind of obstacles can you expect? All kinds of them. The game features so many different things that can happen during runs, that it’s very hard to mention all of it. Some examples are as follows: Falling icicles and the evil octopus’ tentacles, rocks, boxes, explosive barrels and totem poles will all block your way. Since the road is made of snowy and icy grounds, it will also shift and shatter at times, leaving gaps that you have to jump over or making the road much thinner and harder to stay on. You will also run through the inside of logs in the water and on top of them. These logs can be controlled by moving your penguin to either side, so the logs will move the opposite direction.

Also don’t forget the small octopi, who sometimes stand in your way in numbers. They don’t actually block you though, you can run through them, but they will cover your screen in ink for a short time, which makes the environment hard to see and therefore harder to avoid other obstacles.

Now we know about these obstacles and things that are against the player, but what about positive things? Of course, there is fish. Lots of fish. The road is covered in fish in most of the game and your main goal is to try to get as far as you can, while collecting the fish. Fish is the only currency of the game and can be used for various things, like buying new characters or outfits, buying upgrades in the menu or buying specific pre-game powerups that make your current run easier.

Upgrades all cost 500 fish at first and there are 5 levels of each. The higher level they get, the more fish they will cost to buy. They are permanent and provide specific bonuses for all of your future runs. For example the first upgrade causes blue and green fish to appear after reaching a specific distance in the run, while these new fish will worth double or triple the amount as a normal one. Other upgrades might give you a free extra life if your penguin dies in a very short distance on runs or makes octopi drop fish when slapped away. The majority of upgrades though are related to making powerups better.

Powerups? Yes, there are of course powerups in Super Penguins and they make runs much more exciting. You sometimes find penguins tied up with rope, standing between two octopi on the road. If you run into the penguin, you rescue it and get a random powerup. These powerups include things like Fish Sucker, which collects all fish near you for a short time, even if you don’t fully run into them. Invincibility, which causes your penguin to be unkillable for a short time, so you can run into anything and it gets destroyed, instead of causing the end of your run, but water is still dangerous. There are also powerups like Fish Crate, which just awards you some fish, and Bonus Fish, which turns all fish on the ground into red for a short time, causing them to worth 4x as much as normal ones. Lastly, there is the Rocket, which makes your penguin travel 300 meters forward, skipping everything in it’s way, good and bad things both. If you upgrade the rocket, it makes you travel even further.

As mentioned before, you can also buy pre-game powerups with fish that make runs easier. Buying “No Ink Splats” causes octopi to not cover your screen in ink when you run into them. Buying “Fewer Icicles” causes less icicles to fall onto the road. “Double Jump” gives you the ability to jump in the air after you already jumped, making it possible to jump over tall obstacles. You can also buy multiple kinds of Rockets and they start you off further into the game immediately. The last, but probably most often used one is the Extra Life, so when you first die during a run, you get resurrected and can continue.

There are also Ice Crystal collectibles during runs and you can gain special rewards for them each day, like the Mystery Box, Big Mystery Box and Grand Mystery Box.
The game has microtransactions for purchasing fish. You can buy various amounts starting from $0.99 for 5000 fish, all the way up to $42.99 for the biggest package of 500000 fish. If you buy the biggest and second biggest pack, you also get a special character unlock for each. Don’t worry though, there are also options to gain free fish by watching ads or following/liking Super Penguins and Supersolid on social media.
Super Penguins also allows you to compare your scores with your friends on the leaderboards, if you log into Facebook in the game and also gives the option to share the moments you experience. There are achievements as well, which can be completed for points, but these points cannot be used for anything, other than showing off with them.

Lastly, the game uses full screen ads. One will pop in everytime you start up the game for the first time and the same ad might pop in again after a number of runs. Although it’s not too annoying, because you can tap away from them fast.

You can use the “No Ink Spots”, the “Fewer Icicles” and the “Extra Life” powerups to help you. I don’t recommend using the Rockets, because they will put you further into the run, where the whole game is faster and harder to play. So if you are just a beginner, don’t use Rockets yet.

As tip, you should also consider not purchasing characters at first with the fish you get, because they are only cosmetic and you could instead spend that fish on upgrades, which make the gameplay a little bit easier.

During the run itself, you should always try to rescue the penguins you see, as they award you powerups and those can help a great deal with progressing. For example if you get Invincibility, you will be unstoppable by anything other than falling into water. You might even feel like a cheat, by being unable to die, but don’t worry, use it to your advantage!

Also don’t be scared of the small octopi, feel free to run through them, when you have no better option and have to choose between either doing that or running into a rock. If you run into the rock, that will end your run, but octopi ink spots are only a short nuisance.

Another tip is that when running on or inside logs, you control them by turning your penguin to either side, but remember that if the fish are further up or down on the log, you might not be able to turn it fast enough to reach it, only enough hit the wooden walls, so sometimes it’s better to play safe and not try too hard to reach all of the fish. This also applies to the road. If some fish are too risky to get, think twice before doing so!

Super Penguins Review

Super Penguins is a surprisingly fun game. I have played multiple endless runners in my life, but this one is one of the best so far. The snowy, icy theme was pretty fun and kept me entertained. I went on so many runs in this game that I can’t even count it. It also helped greatly that the controls are tight and they are very responsive. Althought it took me like three runs to get used to them, it’s very easy to control the penguin afterwards.

There isn’t really much to complain about in the game honestly, it’s a very well done endless runner. It’s moderately hard, which creates some challenge, but as I got very far into each run, it got so fast that it required all of my attention.

The fish I got during each run was also a surprisingly high amount, so I could easily buy upgrades, although they start to cost much more when leveled up. So in the long run they might be harder to get, but for a beginner the prices are fair, I’d say.
Most of the different characters are very silly looking, but you are not required to buy them, so I only bought one that I liked. Their prices also range from cheap to very expensive.

I also liked how there are multiple ways of getting powerups and the fact that upgrades change the gameplay in smaller ways. Gathering Ice Crystals is also a good motive for playing the game more, as the Mystery Boxes contain exciting loot. Although as you get higher up on the reward tree, you will need to gather so much ofthem that it’s not an easy feat.

As for the ads, they honestly didn’t really annoy me during my playthrough, even while they are full screen ads, they can be exited out of very easily and you can continue on with another run.

Overall I could very much recommend Super Penguins, if you like the genre, it will provide you with hours of fun.

Ratings

Artwork: Super Penguins’ artwork gets an 8/10 from me. It’s a nice, happy looking game. Overall I can’t really complain about anything, as the developers did a nice job on designing it and giving it a cool theme. It looks good enough for a mobile game.

Music & SFX: I give the music a 8/10. The music fits the game’s style very well, with a chilly, calm music in the menus and a more exciting, silly little song during runs. The SFX is pretty good mostly, but the fish collecting sound is a little too loud, as you collect hundreds or thousands of fish each run.

Story & Originality: The story gets a 7/10 rating. It’s nothing spectacular, but it’s good enough for an endless runner game, as they don’t really require a huge background story. The little comic which shows us the story in the beginning is also nice.

General Gameplay: The general gameplay is extremely fun in Super Penguins, so I give it a 9/10. It’s just balanced out very well. All the challenges the obstacles cause during levels and the joy the powerups provide create the exciting gameplay in this game. The upgrades and the various character unlocks help a great deal to differentiate this game from the crowd.

Addictiveness: The game’s addictiveness deserves a 8/10. The progression system the upgrades create and the various powerups during levels make it hard to get bored of Super Penguins. I can imagine myself playing it for a long time even after this review, as it’s just such a fun game!
