Zombie Escape is a game available on mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, that are running Android 2.1 and above – meaning that it is compatible with a lot of older devices. Since its release on 27th of January of 2014, by developers known as Candy Mobile, Zombie Escape has recently achieved over five million total downloads from the Google Play Store. The game is known as a ‘freemium’ application – this basically means that it is completely free to download and play, but it does feature some in app purchases. These in app purchases are for things such as in game currency, but these will also cost the user real life currency to unlock. However, each and every one of these in app purchases are one hundred percent optional, and are down to the end user to chose if they need or want to unlock them for their real currency. They are simply there as an option, and nothing is forced on the user. There is also a lot if third party advertisements within the application which cannot be disabled.
Users of Zombie Escape can find themselves dashing away from rabid zombies, in the likes of the similar but application, Temple Run, while they avoid obstacles, take bridges, attack zombies, jump over obstructions and duck under more obstructions. All of the courses are randomly generated, so therefore are extremely unpredictable in every turn of a corner. Users must begin playing as either a little boy, or a little girl and from there they can unlock new characters with new costume at the cost of in game currency. The game features three dimensional graphics that provides a sense of depth for obstructions in the way of the path for the user, which is very helpful. The game is easy to play and understand, but it does become difficult and somewhat challenging to master it completely. There are four different characters for the users to choose from, which gives them a tiny sense of variety in the gameplay.
Getting started in Zombie Escape is very easy, and extremely straightforward. Once the user opens the app, they will be presented with a small, and interactive, tutorial. It will teach the user the basics of how to control their character as well as how to enable power ups and the main aim of the game. This should take no longer than around sixty seconds, and after that they are able to play the game by themselves. And that is it, the tutorial is super short and very easy to understand and interpret.

There are no cheats available for Zombie Escape. There is no possible, working way of manipulating game files for the end user’s advantage. There is also no way to complete actions in a pattern (cheat codes) to create changes within the game. Earning coins is purely down to the end user’s playing style, or through the in app purchases.
Zombie Escape does provide a pretty good immersive experience, but after a while it does become a little and boring. This game really is not something which can be played for long periods of time, simply because of the repetitiveness. Besides the fast paced action that the game provides, I do not get the usual immersive experience that I otherwise would from other games of this genré. I feel if there was a lot more going on, other than swiping the screen over and over, then it would become immersive. The graphics also need to be improved dramatically to make it become more immersive. This department is something that the developers really should work on.
The user interfaces just feel cheap and as if they were created in minutes. I really do not like them and they need to be improved. Buttons are too big, and they do not look like they are supposed to be a part of the game – they look extremely out of place. They are also not very responsive, even on a high end flagship smartphone, and I often end up pressing the wrong button because of the extremely odd spacing. Also, the user interface menus and buttons really do not look professional – I think this could have been a lot better and it feels like a rushed and pressed creation.
I am also not a great fan of the artwork either – in fact I think they look rather horrible. They are not very original, and I have seen this style of art been done many times before. They look far too childish – I thought zombies were supposed to be scary, but within Zombie Escape they just look like a failed attempt of being scary and more so an insane friend. I do not think that the developers have got what they were aiming for here, and if they were aiming for it then that is such a shame – because quite honestly they are really bad. Yes, they are three dimensional, and yes they do give a sense of depth, but they really do not look scary nor realistic like they were most probably intended to be. This is probably one of the main reasons that the game is not very immersive, as well. This needs some serious attention, and quickly.
Advertisements are annoying, flashing, distracting, and far too frequent. I do not think the amount of advertisements that are displayed within Zombie Escape is acceptable, and it really takes away from the game. It feels awfully cheap and makes the game look like it was made for no reason other than profit – it makes me wonder if the developers even care about their users, and purely about income. I accept the fact that the developers wanted, or even needed, advertisements, but they are far too frequent and very distracting from gameplay. I am not pleased with this and I think it, again, needs some serious attention.
Everything seems to be about monetization with this game, and nothing else.
Artwork: I can only give Zombie Escape a 1/10 for their artwork. I seriously am not a fan of them, at all. I think they are far too childish and it really takes away from what could have otherwise been an alright game. With bad artwork, it makes the game almost unbearable – it genuinely makes me want to close the app and never open it ever again. It is not appealing to a lot of age ranges – probably only very young children. It seems like it could be from a children’s animated television show. It needs some work, and quick. The only reason I am able to give it any rating above zero is because it shows depth very well to the game – but that is about all it does other than make me feel dissapointed.
Music & SFX: I can give Zombie Escape a 3/10 for their music and sound effects. The music is basically the same spooky sound repeated over and over again – pretty boring and annoying after a while because of how repetitive it is. The sound effects are good, but also far too repetitive. I really do not want to hear the same sound effect time after time again – it gets too annoying and draining after a while. I feel like this needs some serious attention too, maybe more sound effects should be added so they are not so repetitive.
Story & Originality: I can only give Zombie Escape nothing higher than a 0/10. This is a blatant copy and rip-off of Temple Run. The only difference is, lots more monetization and advertisements which I do not appreciate. There is also no storyline at all – I do not know who my character is, what my character is or why on earth it is running away from zombies. I think a small introductory sentence would suffice a little bit.
General Gameplay: For gameplay, I can give Zombie Escape a 4/10. Other than the fact that it is a blatant copy of Temple Run, it is not too bad. However, the graphics are awful, the sound effects are repetitive and annoying, and the adverts get in the way too much. I can tell that not a lot of time has been spent on this game, so it makes it fairly boring.
Addictiveness: I can only give Zombie Escape a 0/10 for addictiveness. After the bad graphics, awful sound effects, and the adverts, it makes me not want to play ever again. Nothing works well together, and it seems very cheap and boring. It does not make me want to play.
Overall, I give Zombie Escape a 2/10.
