Maybe the market is so much saturated that every idea you think of is already there, or maybe they just felt that they could master it? These are the questions which a normal human who have played Puzzle & Dragons will ask after playing Dungeon Gems. As per I, these question are absurd. There are hundreds of match-three games and over thousands of games based upon dragons then why there cannot be just two games based upon both? Or it’s just that people like to criticize rather than appreciating for getting something new? This game is available for iOS and Android devices for free.
So, today we’ll take a look at Dungeon Gems, a new game by well-known developers “Gameloft”. They aren’t new to mobile gaming, instead they’re one of those who kept it alive and had given us one of the best games that we ever came across. Just as a reminder, Gameloft is the team behind N.O.V.A, Asphalt, and Modern Combat 3. Dungeon Gems falls into the category of RPG-styled match-three puzzle games. Although it’s not exactly match-three but we cannot create a new category for slight difference or can we?
The plotline is quite simple yet exciting, there are underground dungeons where dragons used to live thousands of years ago. Iono was the most dangerous and biggest of them all, human race faced chaos until Iono flew in the sky, but dragons were extinct and there was nothing left except the treasure they hoarded. So, you with a group of your heroes go in a treasure hunt, killing any demons that you face on your way just to find out Iono wasn’t dead but was in deep sleep and now awaken!!! Now you have to make a squad of five heroes from over two hundred-twenty characters to put an end to the awakened Iono and get that treasure.
Dungeon Gems features both Singleplayer and Multiplayer modes. Singleplayer mode follows the original plotline of game, there are total of one hundred-twenty dungeons/levels that you have pass before meeting Iono and the treasure. Each dungeon contains different number of battles, of course the difficulty will increase as you proceed and the last battle will be with a boss or even bosses in some scenarios. Other than these main dungeon quests, there are also other limited-time events i.e. daily, hourly. Winning a battle will grant you simple gems and AP (action points), and completing a dungeon will give you gold, EXP (experience points), new heroes or upgrades (from simple gems), a token and option to send five thumb-ups to the helping friend. EXP are required to raise your level, when this happens your energy gets recharged and starting AP increases. Each Dungeon also contains three tasks of same kind but of varying difficulty, first one is completing the dungeon, second one is related to the use AP and fourth one for retaining a specific level of health after surviving dungeon.
There are two currencies in Dungeon Gems namely Gold coins and Ringed Gems. Ringed Gems is the primary currency of this game and can be used to purchase everything game has to offer. Gold coins is the secondary currency and are used to evolve and enhance heroes. Unfortunately, despite being a source of hatred developers still continue to use the energy system but I didn’t find the energy system of this game to be harsh. There is a common energy bar for all game modes, whether it be Singleplayer or multiplayer. The bar is small at first and continues to increase till the game ends. Energy consumption is based upon per dungeon rather than per battle and it too increases as you go to higher dungeons. Recharging time is reasonable and it continues to charge during a battle. You can also use five ringed-gems to recharge it. AP (action points) allows you to combine runes (tiles) of different colors in a single turn and are also required to use special skills of the heroes.
This game use rock/paper/scissors method and features five elements which are fire, water, wood, light and dark. Fire can takeover wood, while water is strong against fire and wood can best water. Inverse of these relations represents weakness i.e. wood is weak against fire and so-on. While the first three elements are busy in their world, light and darkness are a weakness of each other. Heroes are again classified into common, rare and super rare. Name of classes indicates the easiness of obtaining them and their strength. Each hero has its own health, attacking power, recovering ability, maximum level, skill moves, special abilities and evolving possibility. Few heroes are attacking type and has less health, while few are defensive type but with weak attack. There are also ‘Essence Heroes’ which aren’t for battling but for evolving and enhancing other heroes.
The gameplay starts off with tutorial and is a modified edition of match-tree. There is a 5 x 3 grid filled with runes of six different colors. One with heart is called healing rune and every color in remaining five represents an element. Here you can even tap a single rune and if you want to pop multiple runes of same color you can move in several directions and even diagonally! That’s not all, you can combine other colors but at the expense of AP. If you change color once it will cost one AP, if twice then three, if three times then AP will reduce by seven and so on. There is also a health bar which represents added power of all heroes, and a healing rune can be used to refill it. Every dungeon has its element too, which means boss and most of enemies will be of that element, and before entering a dungeon you can take ‘help’ from a friend by borrowing a character, making total of six heroes for fight.
Battles are turn-based but enemies may not attack on every turn because every enemy has to wait a specific number of user turns before attacking. You can target a specific enemy by tapping on it. Difficulty, number of battles per dungeon and number of enemies per battle keeps on varying. Bosses also possesses special ‘Boss Skills’ which, again, varies from boss to boss, some of them can shuffle your tiles, few can disable a couple of your heroes for few turns and some bosses can even come back to life.
You can check heroes that you have and edit your team from heroes’ tab. You can contain up to six different team configurations. There are a limited numbers of slots available for heroes in your inventory and these slots can be expanded using five ringed-gems or using in-app purchase of $.99. As the dungeon level increases strong players will be required, other than getting new heroes you can make your current batch stronger by either enhancing or evolving them.
In enhancing, a hero gains XP which might increase the level, and as level increases attacking power, health and recovery of hero increases. Enhancing requires few ingredients which are a pack of gold coins and other heroes; who will be consumed in the process. More XP are required to achieve higher level. While enhancing, the hero being enhanced receives XP from the ones being consumed. You can use upto five heroes for consumption and XP received depends upon the class and level of the consumed heroes. Essence heroes gives additional XP points when consumed. Gold required is also dependent upon the level of hero being enhanced and number of heroes being consumed. There is a maximum level to which a hero can be enhanced.
In evolution, the heroes reaches its higher-star-rated evolved stage. After evolution the level of a hero resets to one, but overall stats for the same level improves a lot. The requirements are heavier than enhancing. First of all evolution requires the heroes to be at their maximum level of current stage, second requirement is Essence heroes, which varies from hero to hero (being evolved), and last one is gold coins. Essence heroes are difficult to obtain via rewards of normal dungeon battles or even using Portal. Tapping on the missing ingredient heroes will tell you the day on which you can get them easily in daily events.
You can get new heroes after clearing a dungeon, in online events or you can summon (purchase) them. You can use three different portals to summon your heroes. First one is ‘Elite Portal’ and requires ringed-gems to work. You can summon one hero for twenty-five ringed-gems and eleven heroes for two hundred-fifty ringed-gems. Summoning eleven will contain at least one super rare hero. The second is called ‘Token Portal and works by consuming tokens which you get after clearing a dungeon. You can summon one hero for ten tokens or eleven heroes for one hundred tokens. Last one is ‘Friend portal’ and requires a specific number of thumb-ups. You too get these thumb-ups when you send them to your helping friend. You’ll get one hero for hundred ups and eleven for one thousand thumb-ups. Elite Portal has most chances of giving powerful heroes, Token Portal has lower chances than that of Elite Portal and Friend Portal gives the weakest and common heroes.
The multiplayer mode isn’t actually Player vs. Player mode but instead features different limited-time events based upon ranking system to judge the best player, you will have battles with AI controlled enemies just like in Singleplayer, and your rank will be based upon these battles. You can access these events in tower quests. A tower event lasts for a week. Every victory will grant you points and the player having most points wins the events. Every participant gets the weekly rewards and there are few additional rewards which depend upon the rank.
As previously indicated, Dungeon Gems also features in-app purchases. You can get fifteen ringed-gems for $1.99, forty-five for $4.99, ninety-five for $9.99, two hundred-fifty for $19.99, six hundred-fifty for $49.99 and fourteen hundred ringed-gems for $99.99. Almost every package has additional free ringed-gems too.
Latest version of Dungeon Gems is 1.1.1b and requires Android 4.0 (ice-cream sandwich) or iOS 6.0 compatible devices, making it available to millions of users. This game can store user’s data offline but to be on the safe side, Dungeon Gems’ game data can be synced with your Facebook account and Google Play Game. There are forty-one achievements, as indicated by Google Play Games, each giving varying amount of XP.

Dungeon Gems is a top notch puzzle-RPG game. Unlike its category, Dungeon Gems has beautiful graphics, impressive sound effects and honorable free-to-play gameplay. Normally RPG games has a complex, hodgepodge user interface making them difficult to understand but Dungeon Gems stands vanilla in this regard and is not anywhere near being complex. The strategy of game not just lies in squad configuration but also in utilization of action points and runes based upon the nature of the enemy. The map is lengthy but is decently placed together and also tell about the major boss dungeons. You can switch and visit different dungeons without any hindrance.
The graphics are truly amazing, one of the centered aspects of the game, every character especially the demons and dragons looked great overall. Every beat of sound effects is the way it should have been. It changes quickly for different scenarios and doesn’t feels repetitive at all. It is detailed to the best possibility for a game of this size. “Easy to understand but difficult to master” is the tagline used by Gameloft for its gameplay and without any second thought it is true. You will get hold of game quickly but using runes in such a way to make remaining useful will require a lot of experience.
Although Dungeon Gems has energy system but it’s not irritating and greedy like Wartune: Hall of Heroes. No, doubt everyone would have loved game more without it but it recharges quickly and also increases with time. Almost everything can be purchased through gold coins and ringed-gems that you’ll get from dungeons and online modes, this game does irritatingly asks for push notification permission but there aren’t any annoying ads nor constant pushes towards in-app purchases. I think I forgot to mention login bonuses, daily free gifts and giveaways of many things will keep you happily in the game.
I liked the gameplay pretty much, yeah it is similar to Puzzle & Dragons but the overall game is way more polished. Diagonal movement of runes, different combos, team combos, specific targeting and many other things adds up the experience. I would have liked more option on targeting like which heroes on that demon but still it would suffice.
Artwork: I’ll give Dungeon Gems an 8/10. As previously mentioned the artwork is brilliant, everything is 3D-lively rather than just fixed 2D images. Color scheme follows the theme, there are reasonable details i.e. dragon fire, fireballs, although more was expect from developers of Modern Combat series but still it’s good for a puzzle game.
Music & SFX: I’ll give this game another 8/10 in this department. From menus till the spawning of monsters, sound effects, background music, battle beats will make sure that you keep your concentration in the game.
Story & Originality: Dungeon Gems lags a bit and get a 7/10 here. The story is there but the progression is slow, which makes you forget the story behind the game.
General Gameplay: I’ll give this game a 7.5/10 for the experience it provides. Battle gameplay does take its roots from Puzzle & dungeon but shines it well and earns a name for itself in this category.
Addictiveness: Dungeon Gem is addictive and gets an 8.5/10. Thanks to make-us-wait-less energy system, no in-app purchase enforcement and easy gameplay, Dungeon Gems is playable. If dungeon gets difficult and you don’t have gold coins to enhance/evolve your hero, just wait a day or enter tower quests to get you those coins needed to put an end to the blockade.
Overall I’ll give Dungeon Gems an 8/10 and I’ll recommend it to all those who are looking for puzzle games.
