If you are an avid video gamer and own anyone of the platforms or consoles then there is a hard chance that you don’t know about Dragon Age. For those who don’t know, Dragon Age is High Fantasy role-playing game series, setup in frictional world of Thedas; a land of mysterious creatures. Dragon Age has millions of followers and there are even novels set in the universe of Dragon Age. This series has won multiple awards in other platforms. All that left was the entry of Dragon Age into the mobile gaming platform. The Heroes of Dragon Age is tactical-RPG developed by Electronic Arts, and it is available for both Android and iOS devices. Heroes of Dragon Age is based around the term freemium, which means that it is a free game but there are few things which can only be brought by paying real currency hence features in app purchases. Let’s go through Heroes of Dragon Age to see if it leaves the same impact as Dragon Age did on other platforms.
This game is hefty in size, while it was downloading, the pictures from Google Play Store gave the impression that it will be the original game ported to mobile but the situation turned out to be totally different. Heroes of Dragon Age is based upon a preset of scenarios, it will take you through the folklore of the land of Thedas and the method chosen by this game isn’t role-playing. Instead, in Heroes of Dragon Age you will purchase and collect over hundreds of characters from Dragon Age universe, use them to build a squad. Then you will use your squad to take out your foes’ squad. This game features turn-based battles to fight your opponent. This turn-based gameplay might have attracted few but many would have been disappointed.
There are both singleplayer and multiplayer modes in Heroes of Dragon Age. In single player mode, there are total of sixteen maps. Each map contains five quests, quests are basically battles. Last quest of each map will be boss fight. Completing each quest will give you coins and XP to get a raise in your level. Winning boss fights will grant you gems too. In multiplayer mode, also known as Player vs Player or PvP mode, you will battle against squad of other players online, winning will give you gold coin and XP. Multiplayer mode’s user interface is hardly any different than the singleplayer’s, you will be using the same squad for both modes.
There are two types of currencies in this game, there are gold coins and gems. This game uses energy system and every singleplayer battle will cost you two bars of energy, while the boss battles will cost four bars of energy. Heroes of Dragon Age has a separate energy bar for multiplayer mode, and will decrease by one for every online battle that you will play. You have to stop playing the game to give your squad rest, making them ready for upcoming battles. Game will notify you once you energy bar is full and this notification is something which I hate. If you don’t like the waiting part then you can use gems to refill your energy bar.
Heroes of Dragon Age gives you different method to store your data. You can keep yourself as a guest which will save your game data offline or you can choose to save your data online. For online data saving there are two options Google Play Games or Facebook. Saving data online give you benefit of having your data on different devices at a time and if anyhow you had to reinstall your game you will not lose any progress. There are a total of seventy-one unlockable achievements in this game which can be accessed through Google Play Store or the game itself. These achievements varies from easy tasks like completing tutorial to unlock till playing this game for different sixty days. The awards of the achievements too varies from gold coins till gems. When you’ll start Heroes of Dragon Age for the first time it will ask for access to Google Play Games and if you want to choose Facebook, you can skip it here and login on Facebook from settings.
You will spend complete first map, The First Blight, and first few quests of the second one, Zathrian’s Curse, in learning and training. Overall this learning phase is lengthy and all you will be doing is reading, what that lady has to say, and touching the screen. You will not have control over the game during this time, which does becomes annoying. So, basically in this game you will be using your squad to repeat the past of Thedas, kicking out Darkspawns which were trying to overrun Thedas. Every hero in your squad has Health, Power, different Abilities and Speed. The first three determines the fighting style of a hero and Speed determines in what order your hero will fight. A squad is arranged in rows. There are three types of heroes when it comes to attacking order. The quick heroes will attack earlier but the damage is small. While slow heroes are the one with highest power they attack on the last but will attack with more power and deals a greater damage. Normal heroes stays in the middle of power and attacking turn. The front row heroes holds the line, and they get additional health as they block the previous row from direct attacks. The back row heroes gets a defensive bonus towards double-damage hits.
There are five different classes of characters, Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. These name indicates the occurrence of the character. Common are easy to get and the difficulty increases as you go up the class making Legendary most difficult to achieve. You get these characters from different packs which will be discussed later in this review.
The color of hero’s base and that of seal which lies in middle of the base tells about the strength, weaknesses and Faction to which character belongs. There are four colors for bases namely bronze, silver, gold and red. These color indicates their strength, silver base are stronger than bronze while the gold ones can outclass silver characters easily. There are five colors of seal, each indicating a different faction. The five different factions are:
Red: This seal is used for Rogues, Animals, Apostates and Qunari, beings which are not considered as a part of major order.
Black: The characters with black seal represents the dark forces of Thedas, which includes races like Darkspawns, Undead and Demons.
White: This color represents the established order which includes ordinary soldiers,Templers, Thedas’ Nobility and Grey Wardens.
Blue: This seal represents the magical beings of Thedas, which includes Spirits, Elves and Mages.
Large: This color represents the creatures which are larger than the size of normal men, such as Golems, Dragons and Orges
Normally the seal is of one color only, but sometimes there are exception when two different colors are present, indicating that the nature of the character is mixed.
A squad contains a total of five positions, out of which four positions are for normal beings and the fifth one is for large creatures only. There are three positions on the front row and two at the back. There are four squad slots, only one is available in the start. To unlock each squad slot you have to pay. The second slot will ask for ten gems, while to unlock third slot you have to pay twenty gems and so-on. You can use these slots to keep differently configured squad for different battles. Runes, which are like wild cards, are used to provide advantages for your squad. There are two slots for runes, so only two runes can be used at a time. Runes are time based and their usability is limited by time. They are effective for few minutes from the time of their implementation and might automatically disappear from your inventory if remain unused for more than couple of days. A rune can be used once only. They can be obtained via challenges, also as a side product while purchasing a hero pack and from the Runes packs. There are different Runes, and each Runes works differently on different classes. The Runes also has classes just like characters, the names are the same too. The time and effectiveness of a Runes increases as you go up the class for example if a Common Runes gives fifteen percent additional power for twenty minutes then an Uncommon will give twenty percent additional power for thirty minutes.
Types of Runes:
Power Runes: These Runes will give your complete squad indicated additional attacking power for aforementioned time. If you are having hard time in dealing damages to your opponents then this Rune is the one you need.
Quick Targeting Runes: Using this Rune will increase the probability of your squad attacking the quick characters first in your opponent’s squad.
Knowledge Runes: Adding this into your active Runes will increase the gained XP from the battle by your characters for all the possible battles you can fight within its limited activity time.
Health Runes: If your characters are having hard time in withstanding enemy attacks then make this Rune one of your two active Runes and it will increase the health of each hero of your squad.
Shielding Runes: Using Shielding Runes will decrease the attacking power of your enemy’s squad by a percentage, resulting in less damage to you squad.
Greed Runes: Increases the number of gold coins that you earn from a battle, better apply this Runes if you are running low on gold.
Slow Targeting Runes: It also works just like Quick Targeting Runes, only difference is that using this will increase the probability of attacking slow characters rather than quick ones.
Control Runes: These Runes will give each of your warrior additional resistance to stun, so that your character don’t miss their turns.
Speed Runes: By putting Speed Rune in your active list you will increase the speed of each character in your squad, so that they can move off their feet quickly.
Wounded Targeting Runes: These Runes increase the chance of your squad targeting the weakest links (by health) of your opponent.
Brave Targeting Runes: Using these will increases the probability of your characters attacking the opponent’s character with the highest health for a specific time period.
Heroes of Dragon Age has a store, featuring products which can be purchased using both game currency and in app purchases. There are three sections in the store, Heroes, Gems and Runes. In Heroes section you can purchase different packs. Every pack has its own specialty. The Recruit pack is available for three hundred-fifty gold coins, this pack will give you a Common hero minimum with chances, mostly low, of getting higher class character and a Rune. The Solder pack is available for fifteen hundred gold coins, this pack must give you an Uncommon hero or large creature with chances, a bit higher than recruit pack, of getting a Rare, Epic or Legendary creature and a Rune. The third is champion pack and it costs thirty-eight gems. This pack guarantees a Rare hero and a Rune with more chances, as compared to previous packs, for Epic and Legendary.
The grand champions pack will set you back by demanding massive three hundred forty-two gems. No doubt the outcome is equally massive as this pack promises total of ten heroes, which will contain two Rares, five Epics, one Legendary with the chances of remaining two being either Epic, legendary or both. The fifth pack, Ultimate pack, to obtain this you have to use your real currency and will cost you $1.99. This can only be purchased once and promises one Epic hero and a Rune. The last pack is called starter pack, it will set you back by $19.99 and promises one Legendary Darkspawn, one Epic Giant Varterral, three Rare heroes and five Legendary Runes. There are also few free packs available which can be won in PvP mode only.
The second section is for purchasing gems. Twenty-two gems costs $1.99, forty-six gems will take $3.99 from your wallet, one hundred twenty-one gems will set you back by $9.99, two hundred seventy-five gems could be yours for $19.99, for four hundred twenty-five gems you will have to pay $29.99, seven hundred twenty gems cost $49.99 and the most expensive pack is for $99.99 which gives sixteen hundred gems.
The third and the last section is for Runes. These Rune packs keeps on varying with time. At the time I’m writing this review, Grab Bag Runes Pack which gives three guaranteed Rares or better, costs ten thousand gold coins. The second pack, Ancient Lore Rune Pack, is for thirteen gems and gives three Runes of knowledge, and the last was Speed Kills Rune Pack available for again thirteen gems and gives a speed Rune.
As you will reach higher maps difficulty level will increase. A situation will come when you will not be able to make through quests and you will require more powerful character. If your luck isn’t working and you are not getting any powerful heroes from packs then you can simply go into your squad options and try fortifying, unlocks at level five, and consuming, unlocks at level Six.
Fortifying: In fortification a character can get bonus health and power from unused characters. Every character has ten fortification slots. Five are for power and rest five are for health. Only two slots, one of each type, are available for you initially, rest of the slots needs to be unlocked through consuming. Depending on the type of slot that you have used, health or power, the character will get addition bonus. This bonus depends upon the faction, rarity and tier of character being placed in the slots. Once a character is placed in slot, it cannot be removed but will be destroyed when replaced by a new character.
Consuming: In consuming the abilities of unused characters can be applied to or consumed by an other character. The strength and abilities of the consumer increases. Normally lower rank and common characters are preferred for consuming but that doesn’t mean you cannot consume higher level character. The consumer gets XP from the one being consumed, also their double-damage increases, gives a raise in tier and unlocks fortification slots. The level of increment depends upon the consumer, the higher the rank, the greater the increment is, i.e. consuming an epic gives more increment than a rare. There is a consume progress bar that shows the current percentage of progress towards unlocking the upcoming bonus and also tells what that bonus is. Overall the upgradeability of characters in this game is complex but top notch.
Current version of this game is 4.2 and fortification was added after version 2.0. The game requires android gingerbread (2.3) minimum for android devices and iOS 6.0 for iPhone users. But Heroes of Dragon Age, due to its high-end graphics will require a fast device and will give your devices a run for their money. So make sure that you have a fast device to get smooth gameplay.
Heroes of Dragon Age is super fun and gems and gold are crucial to the game to help you get the items you need. The gems and gold can be purchased through the app store, but it takes real money, and most people cannot afford these purchases that often. If that sounds like you, then you need to download our Heroes of Dragon Age hack tool, which gives you unlimited gold and gems for free.
Look at the image below to see how the Heroes of Dragon Age hack tool works. Just enter the amounts of gems and gold that you want to add to your account using the options menu.
First, download the Heroes of Dragon Age hack tool, and it should take about 20 seconds to download. You will notice it automatically installs afterward, which should take about 30 seconds or less. Then, select either Android or iOS, and you can then enter the amounts of gems and gold that you want to add to your account.
Lastly, tap “Start” to begin the Heroes of Dragon Age hack tool, and this takes less than 40 seconds to complete. After that has finished, you can simply open up the app on your device, and you will notice the amounts of gem and gold you wanted havealready been added to your account.
During a battle using characters, excluding large, of same faction will give you a faction bonus. Every class contributes to fraction bonus differently. Using a Common gives one percent, Uncommon two percent, Rare gives three percent, Epic four percent and Legendary gives five percent, overall bonus is the summation of all battling character’s percentages.
While fortifying using a character of same faction gives you higher increment in bonuses.
Master the quests by playing them again for a specific number of time, mastering will give you additional gems.
During consumption you will get bonus if the character consumed are of same faction.
The user interface, although extremely complex, but was nicely put together. The availability of guidelines made it possible to understand, otherwise what would have been a total hodgepodge. The controls are extremely easy to get hold of, I would say there aren’t any controls because all you have to do is just a single click to start the battle and there is nothing you can do once the battle is started. The key lies in setting up the squad. You can check an opponent’s squad in a quest before you start the battle and configure your squad based upon it. The map of Thedas is brilliantly designed, and the interface allows you to switch between different quests easily. This map also tells if you have mastered a quest or not. The artwork, and the graphics are extremely impressive. The movements which characters show during the battle are worth writing about. Every character is beautifully designed, you can interact with the character as well in the dashboard.
The sound effects are amazing, perfectly matches the theme and a pair of nice in-ear phones means you’ll take a step into the Dragon Age. The background music is not at all repetitive. No doubt, the graphics, characters and music system of this game justifies for space, more than one and a half gigabyte, which it takes. The place where Heroes of Dragon Age lacks is gameplay and it lacks by a margin which is far beyond recoverability. EA games should have adapted for proper RPG rather than this turn-based, strategic by name game. There are many turn-based battle games i.e. Tiny Dice Dungeons, Pokémon and Personal series and I can bet that each of these features better gameplay than Heroes of Dragon Age. This game is more of a card-collection type game, but without cards. The gameplay is utterly useless, there is nothing like strategy in this game. The stronger squad even if it’s by a margin of equal to size of needle will win without doubts. The worst part, which I already have mentioned, is that once the battle starts you cannot do anything.
You get the characters in a lottery style, which is set in such a way that you will hardly get any good ‘cards’, which means you have to use in-app-purchases to proceed in the game. Although there are day-to-day offers on packs and free pack giveaways too but these aren’t enough. Energy runs out quickly, I don’t even get it why there was a need of energy level. The only things which resembles the original Dragon Age is the name and characters, while graphics and sound effects are the two key attractions which lives upto the level.
I’m a fan and follower of Dragon Age series and I would have been happy if they had followed the original gameplay. The game is enjoyable in first few quest, but gets terribly boring, repetitive, difficult and WRONG.
Artwork: I’ll give this game a 9/10 in this section. The graphics are amazing, animations are smooth, all the characters and the world is detailed to the smallest possibilities. All these things will give you the true taste of Dragon Age.
Music & SFX: I’ll give Heroes of Dragon Age a 8/10 here too. As already mentioned the graphics and music are the only material in this game which lives upto the reputation of Dragon Age. The music contains a mysterious touch, which pumps up and down as per the game scenario.
Story & Originality: Heroes of Dragon Age gets an 8/10 for its story. This game is built upon the folklore of Thedas, which in itself is deep without any loopholes. People who are new to Dragon Age series will lose themselves in the story and because of interest it creates, will starting digging about it over the internet as they won’t be able to get the complete story due from Heroes of Dragon Age due to its lacking gameplay.
General Gameplay: I’ll give this game 5/10 here. The gameplay should have been based on proper RPG rather than tactical-RPG. Above all it’s the worst kind of tactical-RPG I’ve seen. All the tactics of these game are useless, they are tactics only by name. The gameplay hardly requires any human interaction, once the battle starts all you can do is sit down and watch. This game shows how greedy the developers could be because completing this game without in app purchases is more like finding a needle in a desert.
Addictiveness: Heroes of Dragon Age is mildly addictive and gets 6/10. The story will try to keep the users in the game, while the artwork assists. The point where this game takes a wrong turn is when difficulty increases with a sharp gradient and the same it constantly pushes users towards in-app purchases.
Overall I’ll give Heroes of Dragon Age a 7/10. It took all the right turns except the last one just before the finish line.
