The gameplay in Does not Commute starts with a beginner level, showing you how to play the game. The goal of Does not Commute is to strategically drive a certain amount of cars to their destination. While this might sound easy, it is actually pretty hard to achieve. This is because of the fact that every car you have driven, will remain on the road and use the same path as you have driven it.
So for example, if you have driven your first car in a ditch, slowly recovered it and reached your destination, you will always see that car doing the same thing. Now imagine that you have to drive past that car to reach your destination. Doesn’t that sound very hard to achieve? It sure does, and it is. Add to this that you have a time limit to drive all your cars to their destinations and you got a very hard game but entertaining game in your hands.
There are however certain boosters, which you obtain by playing the game. There is the Turbo booster, the Traction booster and Time bonuses. You can use the Turbo booster to speed up your car and make it reach its destination faster. The Traction booster will allow your car to have more grip and will make it easier to take difficult turns without causing any accidents. Sometimes you will see orange circles with either ten, fifteen or twenty seconds in it. If you drive through these circles, you will receive a time bonus equal to the amount in the circle.
If you make mistakes or you are not satisfied with the way you drove a car to its destination, you can use the rewind button. This will place the car back to its starting position and will also replenish the amount of time you spend on driving that particular car. However, you should be aware that you will lose one second as a penalty by using the rewind button so you should never overuse it.
There is only one game mode in Does not Commute and the gameplay is linear. You need to complete an area before you can continue on to the next one. Every area has more cars that need to reach their destinations and different characters driving those cars. This means that progressing through the game will make every area significantly more difficult. Next to the level designs becoming more difficult, you also have to pay attention to the timer, because once it runs out, you will fail the level and have to start over.

Does not Commute has a very unique game concept, a gameplay which I never have seen before on a mobile platform, or any platform for that matter. It is very refreshing to see that there are still game developers that are creative and try to think of new game concepts, instead of hashing out the same idea over and over again. The gameplay did not have a tutorial at the beginning, but the first level was so easy, that it could count as a tutorial on its own. In the beginning level, you will learn about the game mechanics, what you need to do to achieve your goal and how to play the game properly.
Does not Commute features very nice and unique artwork that reminds me of certain games on handheld systems. It also has very nice music and sound effects, which makes the gameplay very entertaining in my opinion. What really amazes me is the fact that the developers combined the artwork with the music perfectly, making it a very appealing game to play. You can easily tell that the developer spend a lot of time developing Does not Commute and I have no doubt that a lot of players appreciate it.
The game has a lot of positive aspects, but unfortunately like many free-to-play games, it also has a few negative aspects. For starters, players who do not want to spend any money on Does not Commute need to start over from the beginning of the game when they stop playing. This means that, for example, if you are at level five, you will have to start back at level one when you have closed down the game and started it back up. In order to be able to play where you left off, you will need to purchase Does not Commute Premium. This costs $1,99 and allows you to use checkpoints in the game. The only problem with this is, that not everyone can or want to spend money on a free-to-play game. It could also possibly turn off many players from the game, because I could imagine that you wouldn’t not want to start over again when you have reached a certain level in the game.
The second negative aspect about Does not Commute is the fact that there are pop-up advertisements, which occasionally show up. Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem, but these pop-ups show up exactly when you are needed to tap on the screen. If you accidently tap on an advertisement, your game will minimalize and your browser will open up, taking you to the website of the ad placer. This is a very annoying and obstructive way of advertisement placement and many players will hate it. The developers should look into implementing their ads differently, causing an minimum amount of obstruction to the playing field of the players.
Artwork: I give Does not Commute an 8/10 for its artwork. The graphics in Does not Commute are pretty decent, especially considering that the game is for the mobile platforms. The graphics reminded me of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, which was released on the Nintendo DS. This means that the developers did a very good job with the artwork, if they were able to remind me of the graphics of a handheld game. There are also many animations in the game, such as when you crash your car or when you fall into a lake, all of which simply makes the game more entertaining. The developers did a great job combining the graphics with the animations, fitting everything together perfectly.
Music & SFX: I give Does not Commute an 8/10 for its music and SFX. There are several soundtracks and sound effects in Does not Commute, making the gameplay livelier and keeping the players entertained. Even the main menu has an old-school radio dial, which when you scroll, changes the music in the background. The music and SFX are easy on the ears and will assure that the players will not get bored or bothered while playing the game itself.
Story & Originality: I give Does not Commute a 9/10 for its story and originality. When I first downloaded Does not Commute, I imagined it being another one of those car driving simulators. I could not be more wrong, because I never played a game like Does not Commute before in my life. The game is very unique in many ways, which makes it very original in my book. There is no single story behind the game but every car which you control has a different character and a small story, which just adds to the originality of the game. It is very refreshing to see that there are still developers out there that try to be creative and develop a different kind of game.
General Gameplay: I give Does not Commute an 8/10 for general gameplay. The gameplay starts off with a very easy level, which is basically the tutorial level. During this level, you will learn how to play the game and how to progress through to the next areas of the game. The gameplay is very diverse and is unlike anything I have ever seen, which makes it even more fun to play. After playing the game a couple of times, the gameplay will become pretty straightforward. Although, because there are many areas which you need to clear and the fact that the levels becomes significantly more difficult, the gameplay remains very entertaining. The controls are easy to get used to and the user interface is very professionally designed.
Addictiveness: I give Does not Commute a 6/10 for addictiveness. Do not get me wrong, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the addictiveness of Does not Commute. The only problem for me is the fact that you have to start over from the beginning, every single time that you stop playing the game. This is because of the fact that the developers try to sell the Premium version of the game and make money for themselves, but in my opinion, they are going at it in a wrong way. There are multiple other ways to earn money with a free-to-play game, but obstructing peoples’ gameplay is simply a no-go. In my opinion, the fact that people who cannot afford to spend money on Does not Commute need to start over again every single time, is very sad and a big turn off from the game itself.
All things considered, I give Does not Commute an 8/10.
