Aircraft Combat 1942 is an arcade game developed by Blade of Game a small company which created only 2 other additional titles: Call of Modern War: Warfare Duty and World Warships Combat. The game is available on both leading platforms (it costs $1.99 for Apple users though) and it has been downloaded for approximately 10 million times. It has a rating of 4.3 out of 5 on Google Play and 4 and a half stars on Apple’s App Store (but only 44 ratings). Aircraft Combat 1942 requires an Android version of at least 2.3 and iOS 4.3 or later for Apple devices.
In this game you take the role of an aircraft pilot that has to complete dozens of risky missions where he must eliminate a lot of enemy aircrafts and survive in the process.
Aircraft Combat 1942 doesn’t require a sign-up and you can’t create an account or sign-in with an existent social account even if you want to. This means that the game data and progression will be lost in case of losing or changing your device or for some reason, uninstall and then reinstall the application. I haven’t find out for sure if the game has a Cloud Save implementation but given the fact that it doesn’t require Google Play Services for Android users, I highly doubt it.
The game has an interesting approach when it comes to ads and microtransactions because it doesn’t have any. From the description that can be found on both Google Play and App Store, you learn that the developers’ only wish is to give Aircraft Combat 1942 a maximum rating. A game like this could have had a lot of ads or some sort of currency implemented so I think that the fact they choose not do so is cool.

The cycle of gaming is something odd. Not so long time ago, people said that they are starting to get bored of the same remastered, revitalized games about the World Wars. However, it seems that they started to miss them because lately, a lot of new games about or with World War action are once again becoming popular among players and that trend includes games for mobile devices too. Aircraft Combat 1942 is the living proof of this new trend but unfortunately it doesn’t live up its expectations.
First of all, what I appreciate the most is the fact that the game is free from the start to the beginning. I know that I mentioned this before but it is uncommon to say about a game nowadays that is completely free. No hidden extra content only for real money payers, no annoying ads – a shout-out to the developers for that. Secondly, I really like the fact that even though Aircraft Combat 1942 might lack imagination, diversity or a good gameplay, it has different types of weapons. I was tired of the same unrealistic Minigun that has no cooldown and infinite ammo that is common to other arcade aircraft games. Here you have 3 types of weapons that can be upgraded and that must be used according to the tactic you approach. In the end, another thing I like in particular about Aircraft Combat 1942 is the fast pace of the game. I t that they should reconsider the gameplay and the combat system but if they want to succeed they should really keep the idea of speed because ultimately, that is what war planes are about.
There are more than a few things that I don’t really like about Aircraft Combat 1942. For example, the fact that you must guess your remaining hit points in fight is an idea I don’t appreciate especially when most of the mission objectives will require to destroy several targets. Also, I don’t have a radar and I know that the aircrafts are from the World War II but a basic radar wouldn’t be a tragedy. I don’t like the fact that even though the game is about combat between aircrafts there isn’t a multiplayer implementation available. That would have been tremendous fun and would have helped the game a lot even though Aircraft Combat 1942 doesn’t have the best gameplay out there. If getting a multiplayer option to a game that was originally not intended to can be hard at least a social implementation with achievements, high scores and the possibility of, I don’t know, sharing pictures on Twitter could have been added to the game to make it more entertaining.
Overall, I will most likely not recommend the game to a lot of people. If you are a fan of aircrafts from World War II you may like it but I believe that there are better alternatives for this genre on the market and you should focus on them.
Ratings
Artwork: Aircraft Combat 1942 gets 7 out of 10 for its artwork. The theme is great and the atmosphere it creates feels like it should be – a battle front. The environment is not really detailed but overall it looks nice and pretty modern. The aircraft models are also detailed and nice-looking and they are similar to the ones used in the World Wars. What I don’t like about the artwork and the reason why the game doesn’t have a maximum rating are the animations. They look abysmal. All the nice graphics and designs of the game are ruined because of the 80’s animations and that disappointed me. When you know you can’t use good animations, at least you can try to manipulate them a bit to look decent but here is not the case.
Music & SFX: I give the game a rating of 7 out of 10 at this segment. The music of Aircraft Combat 1942 is not standing out in any way and it is at its best considered above average. You will hear only a song which is fairly short but having some instrumental music in the background suits the theme pretty well. The sound animations are not that bad either and compared with the visual animations are flawless. I like all the noises that the aircraft makes when it’s damaged or when you fire with your different weapons but that’s all.
Story/Originality: Aircraft Combat 1942 gets 6 out of 10 at this section. Being a game with a timestamp right in the title makes you thinking – finally an arcade game with some kind of a story but, as always, with this one is not the case. There are not even some remotely hints about the World War II except perhaps the aircraft types. Aircraft Combat 1942 doesn’t excel in the originality department either because there are a lot of much better games on the market that offer a much better experience.
General Gameplay: I give Aircraft Combat 1942 a rating of 6 out of 10 for its gameplay. Let me put this straight – the gameplay is bad implemented and it really hurts the game. Like I said before, I appreciate the fact that it is very fast paced and keeps you focused and challenged but I hate the way you aim and especially the way you steer the airplane. I know that the game is not a simulator but the arcade part of the movement has gone too far in my opinion because you have little to none control of your aircraft. At least, the developers should have implemented a sensitivity option if they really want to keep going this way. For the time I’ve played I haven’t encountered any major bugs, freezes or crashes.
Addictiveness: Aircraft Combat 1942 gets a rating of 6 out of 10 for its addictiveness. Unfortunately, the game is not addictive at all. You have a lot of missions available and plenty of aircrafts to choose from but you will get bored fairly easy. I think is the third time I will mention that I appreciate the fact that the developers decided to make an entirely free game but if that’s the price to pay to revitalize the game, I think that they should change their decision. A daily reward implementation and some other game modes are a must for the game.
Overall, Aircraft Combat 1942 gets a rating of 6.4 out of 10. The game is pretty bad and it has a big mountain to climb until I can say otherwise.
