The controls are very simple and easy to master, there are two control options: swiping and jumping. Swiping utilizes the movement of your finger across the screen, you swipe up to jump, swipe up twice to double jump, swipe down to slide, and swipe up then down to dive. Then there is the buttons control option. For this option you tap on the right side for up and tap on the left side for down. Both options are easy to get accustomed to and neither is inherently superior to the other.

Each level has several paths that can be taken and each one has its own special rewards which can be collected, sometimes it’s more coins, treasure chests, tokens, or artifacts. Coins are used for a variety of in game upgrades especially clothing and tokens, coins cannot be used to buy artifacts or treasure chests.
Tokens are perhaps one of your closest allies in Adventure Beaks. Tokens are essentially cheats that the game allows you to use on rare occasions. You are allowed three tokens per game and the option to buy them will be presented to you at the beginning of each level. Some tokens expire once you use them but others don’t. For example a radar token will expire once you use it whereas a Game recording token won’t. The radar token helps you find treasure chests and artifacts before you reach them and a game recording token allows you to record your gameplay and post it to one of many video publishing platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, etc. You can record as many videos as you like.
Another useful tool is the key. Keys unlock certain pathways which can have a variety of different treats usually coins, treasure chests, tokens, or a mix. If you try to go through a pathway that requires a key and you don’t have one, you will notice the lock will glow red and if your penguin will die if you try to go through so make sure you always keep at least one key on you at all times.
Tokens, keys, and coins can all be found inside treasure chests. Treasure chests are collected while you’re playing and redeemed after you complete a level. The most common treasure chest item is an article of clothing, an accessory, or a skin. Occasionally you may be rewarded with a gem, which must be redeemed for coins with each gem having a certain value (e.g. green gems= 50 coins, red gems = 150 coins etc.).
Now to get to the matter of artifacts, what are they and why they are important? In each level there are 8 artifacts to collect, with the exception of the first few introductory levels, it’s impossible to collect all eight of them in one run. This means more often than not you will have to redo a map several times before collecting al of the artifacts. Keep in mind that most of the time you will not need artifacts to go on to the next level, however, you will need a certain amount of artifacts to go from one certain level to another.
For example you must have at least 3 artifacts to get from level 12 to level 13. Artifacts don’t have any other use besides unlocking higher levels, they won’t get you any coins or any outfits.
Now, back to coins, coins are absolutely essential to your success in Adventure beaks, if you’re short on coins you’ll be short on penguins pretty soon. However tempting it might be I highly recommend against actually purchasing outfits and accessories using your coins, I couldn’t tell you how many times I bought a skin or a hat only to win it in the very next level I played.
Outfits come and go and often times you’ll receive them frequently from in game activities any way. No use in spending money on something you will probably get for free anyway. There are also
You can also collect the letters “b-o-n-u-s” which will give you a “bonus” at the end of the game, the surprise here is that you have to spin a prize wheel and whatever the ticker lands on, that’s what you are stuck with. Bonus letters must all be collected in one run, unlike artifacts which can be retrieved in a repeat run.
There are two main environments, each with their own specific challenges and strategic tricks. There’s the Antarctic environment and then there’s the jungle environment. Your primary enemies in the Antarctic are either sea lions, crabs, or fish.
Enemy animals can be taken down by jumping on top of them, or you can avoid them altogether by jumping over them or going under them when you can. I would recommend trying to knock them out since usually you are rewarded with coins when you do this.
Knowing the general movement of these animals is essential to being able to take them down. Sea lions are especially predictable, they can only move side to side, staying grounded by their lack of legs they are easy to jump on top of and immobilize. Crabs on the other hand are a bit more tricky, crabs jump up and down, sometimes they also move side to side so be wary and recognize which type of movement you’re dealing with before going in for the kill. Fish are exclusive to the underwater portion of the Antarctic environment and have rather eclectic movement patterns that vary based on the map, but generally they move up and down while simultaneously moving to the left of the map.
In the Jungle environment you’re essentially dealing with the same animal movements but packaged differently. Here we have frogs and turtles. Frogs jump up and down much like crabs and turtles move side to side like seals do in the Antarctic environment
The levels are broken down like this, the first 25 are in the Antarctic, the second 25 are in the jungle, a few of them take place underwater, and the first couple are tutorials. Pay attention to the tutorials and take full advantage of them. During the tutorials you have unlimited penguins so make sure to get as many coins and treasure chests as possible since you have absolutely nothing to lose.
Besides your traditional level there are also “challenges”. These challenges are, to use Adventure beaks terminology, “short and tough like a penguin”. And tough they are! Luckily you get an unlimited number of tries. The reward for completing a challenge is usually an outfit, skin, or some other visual accessory to change the appearance of your penguins. Not much of a reward but they are fun and completing them will make you much better at Adventure beaks.
Now, here’s how to get free stuff, one of my favorite cheats for any game. Go into the penguin customization screen by selecting the penguin icon when you’re on the map. Select “get more coins” the third option, now go ahead and like the Adventure Beaks Facebook page for 1000 coins, then, like heir twitter page for another 1000 free coins, and watch a video for another free 300 coins.
This way you will get 2300 free coins. You can also periodically watch videos to get free coins, just access the same menu. Also the first time you use up all of your penguins on a mission, you can watch a video to get a new set of adventurers. If you lose your team twice on the same level you’re out of luck and you must use a continue token, if you don’t have a continue token you have to start all over.
To put it succinctly, Adventure beaks is a great game. A wonderful platformer and an all around fun game to play. The level designs are genius and perfect for replaying over and over to collect all of those precious artifacts. The in App purchases are only for cosmetic items and they are relatively inexpensive.
The replayability is also very well done, Adventure Beaks remembers the items you collected, except for the BONUS letters, and it lets you explore the maps so that each run has its own fingerprint in a way. Customizing the penguins was a real joy and added another dimension to the gameplay.
Although the occasional advertisement was annoying you only have to pay a reasonable $1.99 to get rid of them. This is not an app where you feel pressured to purchase anything, in fact the whole system is so well put together, and Adventure beaks is so fun, that you want to pay for items because the developers gave you something you truly love.
There were also a lot of quirky inside jokes and puns which were quite a treat to discover. Such as naming the penguins by default after famous explorers like Amerigo Vespucci and Christopher Columbus. Besides the generosity of the in app rewards I really enjoyed how the levels were proportionately difficult as you progressed, each level only got progressively harder, not exponentially so, when I get stuck on a level for 3 days in a row I tend to give up on a game. All around very well done, a charming and engaging game. Bravo Adventure Beaks.
Ratings
Picture/ Graphics 10/10
Animations were on point, the movements were natural and the controls were responsive. Vibrant colors and animated characters made for wonderful visual presentation that was top of the notch and of an elite class of platformers.
Sound/Fx 7/10
The special effects were great and the music was fun at first but soon it became repetitive and I had to tune it out to enjoy the game. There seems to be only one music track which was quite a disappointment considering it’s an otherwise great game.
Addictiveness 9/10
Very addictive game and for good reason, it has a lot to offer. I wish there would have been a greater variety of game levels.
General Gameplay 9/10
Gameplay was very easy and intuitive, more controls such as speed up or slow down would’ve been great but the system in place worked fine.
Originality/ Creativity 10/10
How often do you lead an elite band of Indiana Jones-esque penguins through tunnels, over vicious seals, and across the jungle in search of precious ancient artifacts?
Overall 9.0/10
